Any 3rd-party miniPCIe with "Wi-Fi 6" 802.11AX work with RBs?

Tue Dec 14, 2021 3:16 am

Some of the RouterBOARDs, like [big] LtAP, have miniPCIe and USB 3.0. I know how the LTE works on miniPCIe & know Mikrotik does make miniPCIe Wi-Fi modules... Just never tried using their miniPCIe for Wi-Fi – even with the "newer" R11e-5Hxxx modules.

Whether any Wi-FI 6 card work would depend a lot on the drivers Mikrotik loads I guess. But google found tons of 802.11ax miniPCIe things – but imagine most need some custom driver or expect root access to compile etc etc etc. Certainly you'd need external antennas etc. for MIMO, etc., etc.

Not looking to blaze a new path myself for 802.11AX using miniPCIe. But curious if anyone has tried to use some 3rd party miniPCIe modules that supports 802.11AX / Wi-Fi 6?

If you download wave2 .npk for ARM and unpack it, you can see list of supported Qualcomm Atheros wlan chipsets:
  • IPQ4019 - integrated SoC with 802.11ac radio
  • IPQ5018 - integrated SoC with 2×2 MU-MIMO 802.11b/g/n/ac/ax WiFi 6
  • IPQ6018 - integrated SoC with dual band 2x2 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6
  • IPQ8074 - Impressive SoC with 4x4 2.4GHz + 8x8 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6
  • QCA9888 - an+ac 2x2:2 Wave2, MU-MIMO, 160MHz
  • QCA9984 - abgn+ac 4x4:4 Wave2, MU-MIMO, 160MHz
From this list only QCA* are radio chips you can find on the MiniPCIe or NGFF/M.2 cards and they are only wave2 max.
So in current state of driver support, experimental 802.11ax is only supported on SoC boards, possibly dev boards from Qualcomm or partners...

Thanks! Guess I missed the bus...

I hadn't seen any discussion of any one trying to "hack AX", but the why was a mystery.
