Prioritize LAN Server Traffic

Sat Jan 08, 2022 9:06 pm

Hi all,

Have a RB2011-2HND with the LAN config as subnet 192.168.1.x with DHCP being handled by the mikrotik, we only have a dumb switch so all routing is happening at mikrotik level. We have internal systems on the server(same subnet) that i would like to prioritize traffic for. I.e any traffic meant for the server from any workstation should be prioritized first before any other traffic.
Is this something possible in mikrotik. The end goal is to be able to have faster connections to the server than any other traffic.

First, in order that a device could prioritize some part of traffic over other part of it, all that traffic must pass through that device. So your 2011 cannot prioritize traffic between two devices in the same subnet if both are connected to the external dumb switch.

Second, what is your actual goal? Normally, traffic prioritization works on a per packet basis, when it comes to shared use of some bottleneck, like the uplink bandwidth. But you talk about workstation to server traffic, which runs on LAN, so what is the bottleneck here? The server's network interface (e.g. only a 10 Mbit/s one where the switch is a gigabit one) or the server's limited ability to respond application requests? I.e do you need to restrict the data flow in bytes per second or the application request flow in requests per second? And where does the traffic competing with the one from the workstations come from, the internet?

Anything to distinguish the services (device with specific IP address?, mac-address? Port being used?

Queues are the typical method of prioritizing traffic.

Your question is a bit general and many information is missing as well...

However, as far as Layer 2 QOS is concerned, take a look here https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... witch+Chip
It would be a good idea to remove the dumb switch anyways.
