L2TP/IPsec connection OK from iOS but not working from Windows 10

Tue Jan 25, 2022 10:47 pm

Hello all,

I've configured a L2TP/IPsec VPN server on a Mikrotik hAP ac lite, following this video https://youtu.be/Swh9OmJ9l20
I'm able to connect to the VPN server from a iOS or Android device, but not from a Windows 10 PC.

Attached the log register from iOS and the Windows PC from both cases.

I'd appreciate any hint to where the issue could be.

Thanks.

Daniel.

Hello,

KB5009543 update for Win10 is to blame. On 11. January 2022. Microsoft issued that update. Few days latter they figured out the problem. Uninstall that KB and it will work again.

Don't uninstall that update, it will be installed again. Just install another one to patch exactly this problem

On some computers this appears under optional updates, if not, download it manually.

Works perfectly fine for ALL clients with this waterproof L2TP setup:

Most L2TP clients support only DH group 2 like Winblows !!! If you set this to a higher DH group Winblows onboard L2TP will fail. iOS supports DH group 14 and will work. Pretty much the same behaviour what you have !!
Windows 10 can be tweaked via Registry or Powershell to support higher cipher suites but this means manual tweaking. So just using the correct DH group and SHA1 as hashing should do the trick instantly ! ;-)

Agree with blue and Karlisi that Microsoft was the cause of L2TP VPN's not working the other month.

Just open Windows Update and pull down all the latest updates - it will most likely fix your problem like it did for me.
