Are MikroTik SFPs compatible with MikroTik media converters?

Thu Jan 27, 2022 5:12 pm

I am trying to use the MikroTik media converter (RBFTC11) to connect a server to my copper network using a couple of MikroTik fibre SFPs (S-85DLC05D). However, I can’t get a connection. When I plug in the SFP into the media converter, the SFP indicator light does not turn on.

Interestingly, I have also tried the same setup with two MikroTik copper SFPs (S-RJ01). In this case, the SFP light turns on and I can communicate with the server.

Can anyone confirm if the S-85DLC05D SFPs are compatible with the RBFTC11 media converter?

If so, is there something wrong with my setup? I have included a diagram of my setup below.

Re: Are MikroTik SFPs compatible with MikroTik media converters?

Mikrotik's wiki is great as it has articles like this: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/MikroTik ... patibility
Its one of the first things I look at when I see link issues with Mikrotik modules :)

Looking over this it looks like the FTC is compatible with the S-85DLS05D module but not at 10Gbps, looks like the FTC are only SFP cages and do not support higher than 1Gbps with any of the Mikrotik module.
Can you try disabling the auto negation on the server and setting it to 1Gb full duplex and see if that links up?

If you are looking for a cheap device that will give you the SFP+ speeds I would recommend taking out the FTC and swapping the current switch for a CRS305-1G-4S+ then you will either be able to use the in built gigabit ethernet port for your laptop.

Please keep in mind that this is a small form factor SFP switch with passive cooling, if you would like to install modules that radiate more heat like the RJ10 modules or VDSL modules in the future it might be better to get something that has active cooling.
