Is there a chance for a RB5010UG+2S+IN ?

Tue Feb 01, 2022 4:39 pm

The RB5009 switch chip has 3x10GB and 8x1GB ports.
10GB is used for CPU, SFP+ and 2.5GB on ether1 (dedicated PHY chip), ether2-8 go to 7 of the 1GB port and the 8th 1GB port goes to nowhere (and is also missing in the RB5009 block diagram).

This seems like wasting potential for a 2nd SFP+ port and getting one more 1GB port.
Is there a chance for such a device? (if I get MT naming right, it would be called something like RB5010UG+2S+IN).

Having SFP+ for WAN and a 2nd for server/NAS or uplink to a switch would be great!
And if using both SFP+ as LAN ports, the switch chip would allow for wirespeed bridging between the two SFP+.
If we are at it, add PoE in and out. This would be my dream device.

PS
I do not care about a WiFi version. As in my setups, the optimal router location is most of the time a very bad WiFi AP location or vice versa.
But that's maybe just me.

My guess is that RB5009 is maximum possible from its form factor (1/4 of 1U). More ports mean wider (or higher) device. I'm not saying it's not gonna happen ...

I do not see much value in the 1/4 of 1U format. Probably this could change if there are future switches etc in the same format combining different devices.
Cramming 4 routers in 1U looks nice, but in most practical installation there is no value to have 4 RB5009 type of boxes in 1U. Granted, this might be different for things like training/school labs etc.

I would also trade in the 2.5GB ether1 for a 2nd SFP+. The front panel cut out is the same for SFP and RJ-45. Or at least keep ether1 as copper/rj45, but add a 10/5/2.5GB copper PHY.
Having one of the switch chips' full blown 10GB XAUI interfaces connected to a max 2.5GB copper port seems to be waste of ressources.

It's been mentioned that RB5009 also fits 10" racks.

Some CRS309 in same form factor would go nicely with it ...

There are other variations of the SOC in the RB5009 (Armada 7040) that Mikrotik could use to make versions with different port configurations. e.g. CN9132

This is a Marvell reference design for the 88E6393X switch chip used in RB5009:

A RB5010UG+2S+IN would not have the leftmost 10G SFP+ cage and use the port towards the CPU. The rest is not much wider than a RB5009.

As I already wrote: if MT wants to keep form factor, then it can't be any wider than RB5009. If you check RB5009 (or published photographs if you don't have access to one), then you'll notice weird sides ... partially they're weird to make cooling more effective and partially they enable all the mounting possibilities. But they do make internal space quite a bit narrower.

It might be possible to make a RB5010 if it came without USB port ... some people would hate you for expressing this idea.

YouTube tells me they do plan more RB5xxx: https://youtu.be/c5kBvwGqGws?t=66
"and yes I said series"
When and what, harder to know. I actually like the design of the RB5009: the physical density is useful sometimes. Trying a couple RB5009s using VRRP at one of our customers, so there is backup (and if one upgrades or whatever, another can take over). But I use the one SFP+ to bridge the devices, but since there isn't 2 SFPs, you can't then uplink the pair of RB5009 at 10Gb/s to something else.

I'm hopeful they make more specialized ones in the RB5xxx series. Say one with 4 x SFP+, or one with bigger CPU with 2 x QSFPs, or one with less ports but M.2 slots inside for disk or modem, etc. Idea being it nice to "mix-and-match" the right RB5xxx devices in the same FF/rack size, but without 2 SFP+ ports (e.g. 10Gb ports) you cannot create SFP backplane using the same form factor.
