Can't force link to 5Gb on CRS305

Fri Mar 18, 2022 3:39 am

Rather complicated setup but perhaps more and more people will have a setup similar to this as 2.5 and 5Gb internet rolls out.

I have 5gb internet via ATT. From the modem, a single connection can be ran at 5Gb. Plugging into my 2.5Gb port on my pc, I can consistently get 2.5Gb up and down.

I decided I wanted to upgrade my local network to 10 gig so I can take advantage of the full 5Gb internet. I bought the CRS305-1G-4S+IN, an RJ45 transceiver (ipolex asf-10g-t), 2 ConnectX3's and a couple SFP+ cables. The 5Gb lan connection now goes into the rj45 transceiver on the switch, and I have an sfp+ cable going from the switch into my desktop's connectx3.

I can download at the full 5Gb but upload drops _significantly_:

I took the RJ45 out of the equation to test just the switch itself. The 2nd connectx3 card went into my nas running Proxmox. Running iperf, I did a simple test.

iperf Done.
Running 10 gig pretty much just fine.

It seems there is either something wrong with the transceiver (maybe) or the switch isn't negotiating properly. On Winbox, it says its connected at 10Gb (impossible, since its a 5Gb port). On my modem, it says its connected at 5Gb. I can't seem to force it on the switch side to 5Gb. The only option is to only "advertise" 5Gb, which does nothing. It still connects at 10Gb according to the switch. If I disable "auto negotiation" I see some options to force it to a certain speed, but nothing between 1Gb and 10Gb.

Please add the option to force 5Gb negotiation

Exact same thing happening to me. Tried everything to fix it. Glad to see I'm not alone; however, this concerns me that this fix won't be easy, or may not even be possible. Any update on getting your issue resolved?

Asymmetric transfer speeds with NBaseT transceivers?

It's likely the transceiver doesn't have proper flow control.

Does sound like a transceiver issue. I use an S+RJ10 in my CRS305 to connect to my PC, and it autonegotiates and shows 2.5G just fine.
