Why can't winbox see Audience device?

Thu Mar 31, 2022 3:18 am

I have my audience device connected to CCR2004 router
I can ping the ip of the audience device on management VLAN1 with ip 192.168.11.253 from the CCR2004 router with VLAN1 ip of 192.168.11.254
when i connect to the audience device via wired ethernet cable, i can ping the CCR2004 router also and can also get to the internet

I can even the wireless SSID on the available wireless networks from laptop
When i try to connect it does not connect and says "no internet connection"
So need help with that also, but first why can't winbox connect?

But winbox can not see this audience device
Why?

Too little information.

Here are some facts:
  • MNDP (Mikrotik's discovery protocol) uses broadcasts ... so it doesn't traverse router and only works within same (V)LAN. It is configured under /ip/neighbour/discovery-settings, one can limit it to work only off select interfaces
  • winbox over MAC only works within same (V)LAN as it uses ethernet directly (it's not routable). Which means that if winbox can not discover mikrotik device, it's likely MAC connection is not possible either
  • winbox over MAC can be limited by configuring things under /tool/mac-server/ and subtree. However there are a few other settings which might block it.
  • winbox over IP is subject to firewall rules (on management computer, routers on the path and managed mikrotik device)
  • winbox over IP is subject to routing (mis)configuration on all routers on the way between winbox executable and managed mikrotik device

Since you seem to struggle configuring the whole lot (CCR, Audience, VLANs, ...), it's really hard to pin the exact point of failure in your case.

I have 2 other CRS switches i am able to connect fine
So why is audience differemt
Again i can ping audience IP from CCR, CRS and vice versa
audience can reach internet

surprised winbox cant connect to this thing until i connect directly to it via wired
i mean i have done similar VLAN setup as other CRS switches, and i can even see the SSID to connect to
Although am not able to connect to th wireless, as it says "no internet connection" probably because it cant get ip address from dhcp server on CCR
but that is another and net question

so i mean with all i have setup, i would expect winbox to connect same way i can with the CCR and the CRS switches

Can someone please help
How is it that i can see wifi SSID but winbox can not see Audience AP
What do i check to fix this?

Audience is connected to CCR router same way CRS switches are connected but winbox cant see Audience AP
It can everything else
All devices can all ping each other and all devices can reach the internet

And yes they all in same VLAN1 management VLAN and can all ping each others address, CCR, CRS and Audience
But winbox cant see audience

Are you able to connect to Winbox via devices that are directly connected to Audience via WiFi or downlink ports (meaning, by not traversing the uplink to the CCR/CRS/etc)?

That is another issue i have, the wifi SSID is on and i can see it but when i try to connect, i get "no internet connection"
I also notice whenever i try to connect to the wifi it cant get DHCP address or something, so maybe i have something off somewhere

The DHCP address is on different VLAN3 and CCR router is DHCP server for the VLAN3

I know on my cap ac, using it as a pure Access Point was a bit frustrating at first, since the device tries to operate in a "router" mode, and the quick webfigs didn't make things any better.

The default settings (or whatever I clicked around with in webfig/quickWebfig) almost always made it difficult to access the AP's management interface (either via web or WinBox) from the "uplink" side, so I always had to access the management interface from the "WiFi" or "downlink" side of things. I eventually resolved the issue, but I don't recall how (something to do with the default bridge not including the uplink port, iirc).

If your setup has similar symptoms, perhaps we had similar configuration issues. If not, then I am not really sure.

I did not use default ocnfig, i wiped all of and started from scratch

Started from scratch... and what is, in detail, the current configuration of Audience? All ports (2x etc + 3x wlan) in one bridge, bridge as DHCP client etc?

@uberwebguru stop to be tedious and post all needed info, instead to not provide ANY useful information
We do not have crystal ball and the problem can be also YOU because you are unable to use the device.

Ok my next post in a few will detail settings i have for the Audience AP
Does RouterOS have option to have config file and be able to edit the file as another option to CLI or winbox or webfig?
So maybe i can just post that config file here, after changing real names and redacting stuffs ofcourse

@rextended @anav @AllexRo

Winbox, RouterOS 7.1.5
Here is what i have done to Audience

Pre-requiste settings on CCR2004

1.
Created bridge "bridge"
Added the port connected to Audience to the "bridge"

2.
Under Interfaces, created VLAN3 and VLAN4
And used "bridge" as interface for the VLAN3 and VLAN4
VLAN4 is management VLAN

3.
Under IP => Addresses created addresses for the VLANs

VLAN3 192.168.13.1/24 interface VLAN3
VLAN4 192.168.14.1/24 interface VLAN4

4.
Went to IP => DHCP server
created DHCP setup for the VLANS
DNS 1.1.1., 8.8.8.8

Settings on Audience

1.
Created a bridge
Checked VLAN filtering under VLAN tab of the bridge

2.
Interfaces => VLAN tab
Created VLAN3 and VLAN4 , VLAN4 is management VLAN
I selected the bridge created above as interface for both VLAN3 (VLAN ID 3) and VLAN4(VLAN ID 4)

3.
Went back to bridge and created VLAN table

bridge. VLAN ID current tagged. current untagged
bridge. 3 bridge, ether1
bridge. 4 ether1
bridge 1 bridge

Went under the Ports tab
for ether1 i used bridge as bridge name and VLAN tab, i have VLAN3

4.
Went under Wireless

Created security profile
"wifi_name_v3" with settings [Mode=dynamic keys, Authentication Types WPA PSK, WPA2 PSK, set WPA and WPA secrets]

For wlan1 i changed

mode to "ap bridge"
band to "2GHz-B/G/N"
SSID to "wifi_name_v3"
Security Profile to "wifi_name_v3"

For wlan2 i changed

mode to "ap bridge"
band to "5GHz-A/N/AC"
SSID to "wifi_name_v3"
Security Profile to "wifi_name_v3"

For wlan3 i changed

mode to "ap bridge"
band to "5GHz-A/N/AC"
SSID to "wifi_name_v3"
Security Profile to "wifi_name_v3"

5.
Went to IP => Addresses
Created addresses for VLAN3 and VLAN4

VLAN3 192.168.13.2/24 interface VLAN3
VLAN4 192.168.14.2/24 interface VLAN4

6.
Went to IP => Routes
Created route to internet via each VLAN gateway

dest address: 0.0.0.0/0 gateway: 192.168.13.1
dest address: 0.0.0.0/0 gateway: 192.168.14.1
dest address: 192.168.13.0/24 gateway: VLAN3
dest address: 192.168.14.0/24 gateway: VLAN4

These are what i have
If anything is not clear, please let me know and will provide details

Not sound like how I can open new terminal, paste the @anav command and after editing for remove private parts, and not removing what just for me is useless, post the file on forum?

Have no clue what you are trying to accomplish with the Audience,
Which vlan is the trusted or management vlan??
There should only be one route........to the gateway IP of the trusted vlan.

Have no clue what you are trying to accomplish with the Audience,

VLAN20 is management VLAN
I want to setup different wifi for VLAN10 and VLAN11
Users connected to wifi wifi_ssid_10 will be on DHCP from CCR on 192.168.10.0/24
and users connected to wifi wifi_ssid_11 will be on DHCP from CCR on 192.168.11.0/24
Havent created the second wifi yet in my config, but this is what i want
I just want to create different networks for wifi

i checked this guide, not same but similar
https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:VLANs_on_Wireless
for me R3 and R4 will be devices connecting to the wifi SSIDs

Image

I was trying to route traffic for each VLAN to the gateway of the VLAN
so VLAN10 will route via 192.168.10.1(gateway ip)
so VLAN11 will route via 192.168.11.1(gateway ip)

so that is what am trying to do, but let me know if this is not possible or if a different way is better
thanks

WHAT WORKS currently:

- i can ping internet from audience and can ping all devices on VLAN20 from audience
- I can see the wifi SSID wifi_ssid_10 as available wifi network
- I can connect to audience via winbox using the private VLAN20 ip address, only after i login to VPN via wireguard(just setup wireguard to connect to the private networks)

WHAT DOES NOT WORK currently:
- i can NOT connect to the wifi SSID wifi_ssid_10 error is "No Internet Connection"
- i can NOT connect to Audience via winbox, same way i can the CCR router and CRS switches(only ways are directly via wired OR via wireguard VPN)

(1) Okay so there is no wifi for vlan20! Good to know.
(2) Why do you have have same SSID names for all WLANS?/
(3) Only need to identify management vlan and only need address for management vlan

(4) I didnt include all of your config, just the important parts that need to be followed.
/interface bridge
add fast-forward=no ingress-filtering=no name=bridge vlan-filtering=yes
/interface ethernet
set [ find default-name=ether1 ] comment=CCR2004
/interface vlan
add interface=bridge name=vlan20 vlan-id=20
/interface list
add name=Trusted
/interface list member
add interface=vlan20 list=Trusted
/interface bridge port
add bridge=bridge interface=ether1 ingress-filtering=yes frame-types=admit-only-tagged
add bridge=bridge interface=wlan1 pvid=10 ingress-filtering=yes frame-types=admit-only-priority-and-untagged
add bridge=bridge interface=wlan2 pvid=10 ingress-filtering=yes frame-types=admit-only-priority-and-untagged
add bridge=bridge interface=wlan3 pvid=10 ingress-filtering=yes frame-types=admit-only-priority-and-untagged
/ip neighbor discovery-settings
set discover-interface-list=Trusted
/interface bridge vlan
add bridge=bridge tagged=ether1,bridge vlan-ids=20
add bridge=bridge tagged=ether1, untagged=wlan1,wlan2,wlan3 vlan-ids=10
/ip address

/ip dns
set servers=1.1.1.1,8.8.8.8
/ip route
add disabled=no dst-address=0.0.0.0/0 gateway=192.168.20.1

Not including my makes it difficult to know what to add and remove
I will try and make changes based on what i think i need to do
but if you post with mine, will make it easier
so work on this and report what i have

so with this, how do i create the different wifi networks?
wifi_ssid_10 for VLAN10
wifi_ssid_11 for VLAN11

thanks a lot for this

(2) Why do you have have same SSID names for all WLANS?/
because i thought that is how you enable the wireless bands to the wifi network
how should i do this then?

the VLAN20 works like i mentioned, i can access audience on the VLAN20 all fine
no issues there because i see you creating Trusted interface list etc, VLAN20 works fine already

only issue is with the WIFI networks

So i followed the settings you have
and i still notice the WLAN interfaces are still grayed out
How do i fix this?

Please repost your config with your changes so i can see where you are at.
As noted you DONT need to identify vlans11 and 10 as belonging to the bridge only vlan20.
Not sure if its greyed out, or just not simply active at the moment, no traffic flowing through

Ok i removed the VLAN10, VLAN11 from the interface list now
I just tried to connect to the wifi wifi_ssid_10 and am in!
So it works now for VLAN10
I was able to get ip from DHCP server and can connect to internet and rich other stuffs on the network like CCR webfig url etc

Now how do i setup for VLAN11? for wifi wifi_ssid_11
How will that work?

from your config
/interface bridge port
add bridge=bridge interface=ether1 ingress-filtering=yes frame-types=admit-only-tagged
add bridge=bridge interface=wlan1 pvid=10 ingress-filtering=yes frame-types=admit-only-priority-and-untagged
add bridge=bridge interface=wlan2 pvid=10 ingress-filtering=yes frame-types=admit-only-priority-and-untagged
add bridge=bridge interface=wlan3 pvid=10 ingress-filtering=yes frame-types=admit-only-priority-and-untagged
...
/interface bridge vlan
add bridge=bridge tagged=ether1,bridge vlan-ids=20
add bridge=bridge tagged=ether1, untagged=wlan1,wlan2,wlan3 vlan-ids=10
...

so where does the VLAN11 fit in here?

From what am seeing seems, there can only be very limited number of VLANs on wireless
Seems the number of VLANs possible is equal to the number of WLAN interfaces on the AP
From picture below each VLAN is on a different WLAN interface

Image

So i changed WLAN2 to use VLAN11
and now i can connect to VLAN11

So i think am good now
Wasn't how i thought the wireless VLAN will work
Was thinking can add as many VLANs as i want like a regular router/switch
but much better than most wireless AP out there to be fair
the power or RouterOS at least allows more than one VLAN on wireless

thanks a lot @anav

Super glad you got it running!!
Yes, for example I have a hex used as a switch and can run many vlans over it (from my main switch) and then go into the config at any time to select what is going over the hex ports.

What do you mean you used hex as switch and can run many VLANs over it?
So you have many VLANs for wifi?

No I meant that RoS is very flexible, you could run 50 vlans into the audience and then through one of the ethernet ports run those 50 to another device (like a smart switch).
Yes, if using vlans you can has as many WLANS as you can create but most devices its not recommended to create more than 6 (2 per chain plus the master ). SOmething like that anyway.
Most APs are not capable of more practically speaking

Oh got it
Yeah this is still better than most other AP
You wont even be able to dream of having VLANs on wireless(on same AP)
Big ups to Mirktotik, i think am comfortable now
got things almost where i need them now

next is just firewall rules and learning about how to apply them
previously/currently using Juniper SRX and the only thing that helped me in managing it was the fact that they have JUNOS CLI editor within JWEB
where you can pretty much modify the code and that was very easy for me as the JWEB was complete crap
and i did not want to use CLI

I always like and prefer GUI to CLI , i was going to go with fortigate/sonicwall
but i like mikrotik a lot, great price and love their concept of RouterOS for everything
essentially giving every device they make super powerful with the RouterOS

Yes, if using vlans you can has as many WLANS as you can create but most devices its not recommended to create more than 6 (2 per chain plus the master ).

Number of WLANs per radio has nothing to do with number of chains. All the basic data about each WLAN needs to be transmitted periodically (so that clients see it exists) by means of beacon frames. Beacon frames are transmitted using basic rate and using all the chains for maximum backwards compatibility (unless one configures it differently) and maximum range. Since beacon frames are transmitted periodically and frequently, they take up some air time. If one exaggerates with number of WLANs on single radio, beacon frames can take up considerable amount of air time and thus negatively affecting overall throughput. And no, chains of the same radio are not independent at all, one can not limit certain SSID only to use one chain with another SSID using only the other chain, chains are expressly used for MIMO in an entirely interdependent manner.

Which means that practical limit is indeed around 6 WLANs per radio (physical one plus 5 virtual) but that's true for both single chain devices (such as hAP ac lite on 5GHz) and quad chain devices (e.g. audience on the upper 5GHz radio or the wireless version of RB4011).

Can you please share how to create virtual WLAN?
Audience has 3 WLANs, triband
So how do i create virtual WLANs?

One of google results when searching for "mikrotik virtual wlan" is:

https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:I ... interfaces

Or do you want some spoon feeding?

Yes MKX, not chains but based on the number WLANS that come with the AP and the ability to create additional WLANs, sometimes called guest on some APs, called virtual wlans on mikrotik, but performance diminished passed a certain number of total wifi lans. Thanks for the correction!
As for spoons.
Yes, very easy to do (add virtual wlans) just use the "+" symbol !

some light reading............
