Does CS326 support 2.5Gbit?

Sat Apr 09, 2022 5:10 pm

Hi everyone

I have a CS326 wit SwOS 2.13 running. I got a new motherboard that should support 2.5 Gbit. The auto negotiation puts it on 1GBit. I will have to make sure kubuntu actually supports 2.5 GBit in the first place but just so I don't waste my time I wanted to ask whether the switch even supported this.

When I turn off Auto Negotiation, 2.5 isn't offered as a fixed speed so I'm unsure.

Edit: Just checked on linux:

Settings for enp38s0:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
1000baseT/Full
2500baseT/Full
Supported pause frame use: Symmetric Receive-only
Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
Supported FEC modes: Not reported
Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
1000baseT/Full
2500baseT/Full
Advertised pause frame use: Symmetric Receive-only
Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
Advertised FEC modes: Not reported
Link partner advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full
Link partner advertised pause frame use: Transmit-only
Link partner advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
Link partner advertised FEC modes: Not reported
Speed: 1000Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Auto-negotiation: on
master-slave cfg: preferred slave
master-slave status: slave
Port: Twisted Pair
PHYAD: 0
Transceiver: external
MDI-X: Unknown
netlink error: Operation not permitted
Link detected: yes

So the switch does not advertise 2.5Gbit. therefore no auto negotiation... so I'm guessing unsupported?

The RJ45 ports are definitely only 1Gbps. The two SFP+ ports support 10Gbps SFP modules and the line rate negotiation is left to the SFP module installed.

Mikrotik has it's SFP compatibility document, which obviously only contains their own SFP modules. In 10Gbps section they describe module S+RJ10, which is a 10Gbps RJ45 module and supports 2.5Gbps rate if sonfigured to do autonegotiation. The text doesn't explicitly distinguish ROS from SwOS, which implies that they should both operate similarly. In reality there are some differences in this regard though.

If you don't use MT's SFP module, then the chances of getting it working are slim I'm affraid.

D'uh. Wow, what a brain fart... of course the RJ-45 are not gonna go to 2.5 gigs... I'm so sorry for wasting your time :D.
