Wireless bandwidth and signal issue

Mon Apr 18, 2022 7:26 pm

Hello,
I have Mikrotik HAP AC3 and some problems with wifi. 2.4Ghz network works pretty fine, but 5Ghz is not that good as it could be. I was trying many configuration combinations and depends on settings speedtest shows 50-150 Mbps download and... 70-230 upload. Mostly upload is twice download speed. Also signal is not well, computer is about 5-7 meter far without any walls on way and it is about 55%. Comparing all of it to isp device it is very poor because on simple zte router bandwidth reaches up to 370-400 download and 400-430 upload. Signal is similar situation, the same position for endpoint and router, it shows about 80-90% with isp device.

Can you point where problem may be? Can it be some configuration issue, or maybe hap ac3 is not good at wireless?

Best wireless performance is with Wifi Wave2 drivers - and hap ac3 supports them.
However, I got also pretty good results with Mikrotik wireless drivers, from ver 7.2.1 onwards.

So, apart from trying RouterOS stable 7.2.1, I'd change the following:
- Band N/AC - do you really need A?
- go for a specific frequency (5240 in eeeC case / 5260 Ceee etc)
- installation: any
- WMM support: enabled

I have 7.2.1 but ok, Ive just installed wifi wave 2 and almost success! Now it is 250-300 up and down, but signal is still quite weak. It is literally little bit better, but still not as good as it could be. What is max tx power for hap ac3?

Specifications state maximum Tx power on 5GHz to be 26dBm. However, country regulations often reduce that. ETSI countries (Europe) for example limit Tx power to values between 20dBm and 27dBm (depending on which part of 5GHz band) EIRP ... and EIRP includes antenna gain and all chains, hAP ac3 antennae have gain of 5.5dBi. If AP ends up using channel which falls into 20dBm range, actual Tx power per chain (amplifier output) will be 11dBm (regulated power 20dBm minus antenna gain rounded up 6dBi minus dual chain factor 3dB), which is pretty much lower than 26dBm (or 19dBm, which is Tx power for highest supported data rate).

As a matter of fact, all recent WiFi AP should behave similarly, country regulatiobs should be enforced by all vendors. The only difference could be actual antenna gain (poorly manufactured antenna might have actual gain lower than anticipated by developers). It is possible to fiddle with settings to get higher signal level, but that might be counter productive ... also clients have to be able to talk back ... many clients (e.g. smart phones) are not able to transmit at high power, increasing Tx power doesn't change Rx sensitivity.

For max power avoid the auto freq without setting a channels list. You don't know what you will get.
As @MKX said, the EIRP is limited.
5180-5320 is 20dBm only in ETSI (Europe) region.
5500+ is 27 dBm, but all are DFS channels.

5170-5250/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(23dBm)/passive,indoor
5170-5330/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(20dBm)/dfs,passive,indoor
5250-5330/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(20dBm)/dfs,passive,indoor
5490-5710/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(27dBm)/dfs,passive

Some regions (eg US) have non-DFS on the 5740+ freq range, and (much) higher allowed power, even on 5180-5320.

5170-5250/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(30dBm)
5170-5330/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(27dBm)/dfs,passive
5250-5330/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(27dBm)/dfs,passive
5490-5730/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(27dBm)/dfs,passive
5735-5835/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(30dBm)

In Terminal, use: "interface wireless info country-info"

For the specifications, you probably want to run at MCS9 (otherwise use a smaller bandwidth)

In my experience hap ac3 with wifiwave2 has lower signal strength in 5Ghz. My phone just stopped connecting to 5Ghz from desktop. I guess it's because of
frequency-mode=manual-txpower
available in old wifi.
