mAP lite power draw?

Tue Apr 26, 2022 11:47 pm

Is there a command that will show voltage and current draw of mAP lite device?

I wonder how much it draws, not to overload USB ports, as they usually can reliably provide much less than than 500mA standard describes.

Thanks

Unless I missed it, not that I know.
But maybe someone else has found a way...

Thanks. Do you maybe happen to have real world info on power draw? Website says 700 mA (3.5W) max..

I can use it without any problems with a micro-USB connection, so should be max 500mA since that's what a standard USB port should provide.
The power adapter provided is specified at 1A / 5W max. Might be required sometimes when REALLY taxing the little bugger

From experience I know that many devices have problems supplying even 500mA on 5v USB output, especially in long term applications.

Small edit made w.r.t. power adapter supplied.

Yes, you are right, I just checked :-)

I bought this one as a toy, and I configured it as a bridge AP so I can dig into wired LANs easily... On it have WEYLAND-YUTANI SSID :D

I am kind of amazed by this thing. I get 40 mbps routinely, and it goes up to 60-70 in ideal conditions.

That's also what I see.
Is indeed a truly powerful thing for the size and price it has.

0.14A - 0.16A measured when connected to laptop

Thank you very much! Could you share what was the load / Tx power setting?

I presume this is idling power drain?

Under load, a bit harder to test.

Was already active as repeater, but no client connected. (so wifi radio was active). And this mAP connects to my 2 VPN hubs via SSTP.

When adding the laptop as client and doing download tests it goes up to 0.26A max (CPU 16%, 20Mbps netto, -60dBm connection), but certainly not most of the time.
Just connecting and streaming one Youtube is 0.14-0.19A (CPU 2%)

Total wifi power is 18dBm according to Winbox information. (ETSI regulation = 20dBm- antenna gain = 18dBm total, 15 dBm/antenna) (18dBm = 63mW= 0,013A @ 5V)

Thank you very much!

So, it is 260mA or 1.3W or under reasonable load, which is about 50% for USB 2.0 standard of max 500 mA. With light load it is 0,8W which is truly amazing.

Swell and thanks again!

Yep. Getting the CPU load up to steady 90% (Btest-send through SSTP tunnel) it peaks at 0,410A.
30dBm/1W wifi power (not allowed in Europe) would add 0.200A at most. But the radio is 22dBm max as specified by MT. (0.032A versus 0.013A@18dBm or +19mA)

Power consumption is not high with MT AP.
See RB260GSP PoE injection .... (no data load) (SXTsq ac 5, hAP ac2, wAP ac)

I actually never checked it myself, but I am surprised re wAP ac reqs. I always counted it as 10-15W AP, but it seems taht realistically it is much lower.

Just checked on one of my PoE switches:

RBcAPL-2nD - 1.4 W
RBcAP-2D - 1.0 W
RBwAPr-2nD - 1.8W

These are idling, and go to 2-3W occasionally, which is still very low. This is on 26.9V.

On another switch at 27.2V, CAP ac show about 4-5W more or less constantly.

some time ago i tested power consumption on hap lite hap mini ahn map lite (i dont documented it) and i did not saw too much changes in power consumption with or without load or heavy wireless traffic traffic or radio enabled or disabled

i have seen map-lite gets much warmer when feeded by poe than feeded by usb

Logical.
Additional conversion from higher to lower voltage hence higher heath dissipation.

mAP Lite powered by RB260GSP PoE
Same condition (repeater + VPN, no client) 65-69mA, 1.5-1.6W, that's double of USB

PS: (If shutdown, power consumption is about the same)
