WiFi reverberation

Sun Jun 19, 2022 12:57 am

Hello,

I have a location built like a doomsday bunker, with lots of reinforced concrete.
Most rooms are like this:

Yeah, I skipped art classes if you cannot tell from the masterpiece above.
Now, the owner would like the AP placement in the blue spot (out of sight).
The problem is that between the beam and the wall (both reinforced concrete) there is only about 50 cm of space.
I recall reading somewhere that such small space between such "absorbent" material would lead to bad radio reverberation that would distort the signal greatly and lower data transmission rates.
As much as I searched, I could not find anything in this regard (or my searching skills are awful today).
To counter this reverberation as much as possible, my preferred location would be in the middle of the ceiling (or as much as centered as possible), meaning the green spot.

Given that the house is still under construction, I cannot mount an AP to test my theory.
Anyone can confirm or deny that placing an AP in the blue spot would lead to heavy radio interference cause by the small gap between the beam and the wall?

Thank you.

Maybe look at this : https://physics.stackexchange.com/quest ... ropagation
Calculations would need modelling the space: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/08 ... -and-gifs/
I love that cool video, mentioned in there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqqEYz38ens And an ESP2866 costs what? 3€ ? I payed €3.5 for an ESP32, and WSP2812 is just one LED from a LED strip.

Anyway power on a MT AP, load "Wifi Analyzer" on a Android smartphone, and its readings plus the "Registration table" on the MT will tell you all you need. No Internet connection needed for this test.

The beam will reduce the wifi a lot. I would place the AP "on" the beam, to maximise it's view on the room.

Think of radio waves as visible light for modeling. You need to illuminate the room, where is the best place to hang the bulb? in the corner behind the column :)
For radio scouting I use a 12 volt battery and turn on an access point. I put it in the intended location and use the app on my phone to measure the signal strength.
The place marked in green is the best, you may need to step back from the ceiling at 30 cm, so that the beams do not block the signal.

Agree with other guys: AP hidden behind the beam won't do too well. At least move it to the beam or to the other side of beam so it'll have unobstructed view of the most of room if centre location is off limits.
