RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD beeping every 32~33 seconds

Fri Jun 24, 2022 11:06 am

I have a RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD, updated to the latest stable RouterOS 7.3.1.

For a while now, it has been emitting a very faint and short beep every 32~33 seconds. I checked the logs and I couldn't spot anything odd.

Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

For the record, the device seems to work. I can access the internet through it. I can log into webfig. The reported temperature of the CPU seems normal (43 degrees C). The reported voltage is also normal (24.1V).

That sure is strange, as the RB4011 does NOT have a beeper! (in older MikroTik models there always was a beeper, but it seems to have been cost-optimized out).
So when a 4011 beeps, it can only be things like the switchmode regulator. Not good when that beeps. Maybe you have PoE enabled on port 10 and a short-circuit?

I just forced PoE to off on port 10 and it's still producing the beep.

Ok it was only a guess... my 4011 does not beep. Like you I would get anxious when it did.
Probably the only way forward is to refer it to the technical service of the supplier.

Never mind. I guess it's not the RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD after all. I completely powered it off and I still hear the beep. Something else in my living room is making the beep and I just can't find the source, lol.

LOL, found it.

It's a smoke alarm with a low battery that we removed from the ceiling a while ago and stuck into a drawer (which happened to be right next to my router).

Ah yes those are nasty ones! I have smoke alarms in every room and when a battery runs empty they beep, and it is really difficult to locate which one it is.
If you put it in a drawer, it becomes even more difficult...

In normal operation the low-battery condition first occurs at low temperature (when the battery has less chemical activity). So normally it happens in winter during the night when the heating is off and the house cools down. At some time I wake up at about 4AM because of this beep and have to wander around to every different room to find the one that beeps, find a chair to take it down and remove the battery. When I just ignore it, it will stop when the house warms and the problem re-appears the next day.
Extremely irritating devices...
