New Chateau 5G Firmware (xx13A02M4G) - Broken Connection

Mon Jul 18, 2022 12:42 pm

Hello,

I'm running a Chateau 5g on 7.4rc. Last night i successfully installed a newly available firmware upgrade RG502QEAAAR13A02M4G - but it looks like this has completely broken my 5g connectivity.

It does not establish a 5g connection at all (I am very close to the base station and using directional antennas), and every 30 seconds or so it tries to re-establish the LTE connection that is available. See screenshot which shows the pattern. I tried a software reset with no success. Downgrading to 7.3x did not help.

Is there a way of downgrading the firmware on the modem? Is anyone else seeing this?
[admin@MikroTik] > /interface lte at-chat lte1 input="AT+QNWPREFCFG=\"nr5g_band\""
output: +QNWPREFCFG: "nr5g_band",1:3:5:7:8:20:28:38:40:41:77:78:79
OK

[admin@MikroTik] > /interface lte at-chat lte1 input="AT+QNWPREFCFG=\"nr5g_disable_mode\""
output: +QNWPREFCFG: "nr5g_disable_mode",0
OK

[admin@MikroTik] > /interface lte at-chat lte1 input="AT+QNWPREFCFG=\"rat_acq_order\""
output: +QNWPREFCFG: "rat_order_pref",NR5G:LTE:WCDMA
OK

For comparison, here is my normal connectivity (taken a day or so before).

I tried a downgrade with:
/interface lte firmware-upgrade lte1 upgrade=yes firmware-file="http://10.0.0.3/RG502QEAAAR11A07M4G_01.001.01.001.zip"
I know the file is available on my local webserver, but the upgrade always fails with: status:

download failed: std failure: timeout (13)

Not sure how to progress this.

Had the same problem after modem firmware upgrade using Webfig. No 5G connection, no band N78 vsible.

Then found the solution on Quectel forum. After firmware upgrade someone recommended to reset AT command settings to defaults, I did it using command /interface lte at-chat lte1 input="AT&F 0". After that and reboot I can see band N78 and use 5G NSA again!

Had the same problem after modem firmware upgrade using Webfig.
I have been waiting before updating the firmware on my unit, as I saw some issue.
Do you know what has been changed/improved, if any, with this firmware update ?
I couldn’t find much info on Quectel forum and not really sure which improvement could be expected.
Thanks

By checking at the Quectel forum I found some zip package provided by FAE support which includes a PDF with release notes.
New features RG502QEAAAR13A01M4G_01.001.01.001
Added the function of reporting DFOTA upgrade progress on the Debug port.
Added AT+QNWCFG="clr_rplmn" to delete the RPLMN information in the SIM card.
Added AT+QNWCFG="rrc_state" to query the RRC state. Added AT+QCFG="clat" to control clat_enabled.

New features RG502QEAAAR13A02M4G_01.001.01.001
Added AT+QNWCFG="msisdn" to query MSISIDN from network.
Added AT+QIMSCFG="ims_status" to query the current IMS registration status and configure whether to enable URC reporting of IMS registration status.
Added AT+QGPAPN to obtain the current APN.

Improvements between both versions are in summary these:
Extended AT+QCAINFO to support NSA and SA.
Optimized AT+QRSRP to support querying RSRP under NSA.
Modified the characteristics of AT+QNWLOCK to take effect immediately and the configuration to be not saved.
Extended AT+QCAINFO to add parameters <ul_configured>, <ul_bandwidth> and <ul_earfcn>.
Extended AT+QNWCFG="rrc_state" to support URC reporting.
Solved the problem that incorrect PLMN information was returned after
executing AT+QSCAN.
Extended AT+QSCAN to support querying more parameters under LTE.
Optimized the compatibility of the module with the RTL8125 PHY.
Extended AT+QGPAPN to support querying IP address and other information.
Solved the problem that only one APN could be queried through AT+QGPAPN after multiple data call under SA.
Solved the problem that the configuration would be rewritten after configuring <enable> of AT+QCFG="pdp/duplicatechk" and then restarted the module.
Solved the problem that the MCC and MNC returned by AT+QNETINFO="servingcell" were invalid values.
Solved the problem that AT+QENG="servingcell" returned an invalid <ARFCN> under NSA.
Optimized the judgment of AT+COPS on the ENDC registration result.
Optimized AT+QRSRP by returning -32768 to indicate an invalid value. Optimized the judgment of AT+COPS on the ENDC registration result.
Solved the problem that AT+QSCAN=3,1 did not display 5G cell information in some cases.
Displayed AT+QSCAN to support querying LTE cell bandwidth information and 5G cell SSB SCS information.
Solved the problem that the frequency band information of "TDD NR5G" and "FDD NR5G" returned by AT+QNWINFO was inconsistent with the actual information.
Optimized the command set of AT+QETH to support Ethernet PHY attribute configurations of PCIe interface.
Solved the problem that <stat> of the currently registered operator in the returned result of AT+COPS=? was incorrect when the module was registered on 5G SA.
Solved the problem that the return value of AT+QTEMP was invalid.
Solved the problem that the module could not respond correctly to C-APDU requests.

I tried a downgrade with:
/interface lte firmware-upgrade lte1 upgrade=yes firmware-file="http://10.0.0.3/RG502QEAAAR11A07M4G_01.001.01.001.zip"
I know the file is available on my local webserver, but the upgrade always fails with: status:

download failed: std failure: timeout (13)

Not sure how to progress this.
Did you manage to resolve this?

Refreshing this question. Did someone manage to fix the issue with 5G? on the Chateau 5G? (funny thing I just bought a router which should support 5G but doesn't have it - it's annoying)

This update went fine on my case.
Before with the old firmware my Chateau was not able to connect to 5G even though N28 was available in my area.
After the updates the router was able to connect to N28.
By reading from modem’s supplier website this firmware was updating something about 5G which was not available before.
In my case it worked without doing anything special.

How did you manage to get such help? I raised a support ticket to mikrotik but they just ignored me.

I've had no update from MikroTik, I'm still running the Beta modem firmware they gave me at the start of October.
The Quectel forums are also quiet with Quectel recommending that people do not upgrade from R11.

If you email support@mikrotik detailing the issue, the mobile network you are connected to, the bands supported by the mobile operator, the other device you have tested the sim card with, you should get a response.
