Home router with two Ethernet WAN

Fri Jul 22, 2022 2:13 pm

Hi all,

I am about to add a second Internet line to my home so I can have a back up Internet line. I was wondering what small router can I use to manage the two WAN connections.

The hEX family looks good for the job, however I have some doubts. For instance, If I get a hEX S, Can I use two Ethernet ports as a WAN or the unique ports available for WAN son the SPF port and the first Ethernet port? On the other hand, the hEX model seems to accomplish the requirements but it only has one WAN port, or can I use any port as a WAN?

If none of the hEX family routers can do the job I think RB2011 family will do, The counter part here is those 5 Fast Ethernet ports.

Any help on this?

Thank you.

Depends on what throughput you're expecting.
RB2011 is too old to be good for anything.
hEX, hAP ac2, hAP ac3, RB4011 or RB5009 ...

The max throughput should be around 150-200 Mb/s. Let's say a 300Mb/s just in case. But not more than that.

Your best bang for the buck (same price as hex) is the hapac2
It can handle up to a gig connection on the WAN side and has five ports.
The ports on MT devices can be wan ports or lan type ports, the admin decides.

... and somehow I feel you deliberately forgot to mention it also has 2.4 and 5Ghz wifi

It has a nice WiFi chip but not enough storage to run a decent driver for it...

I don't need WiFi so I'll prefer just an Ethernet router.

i don't know the throughput of the hEX routers but If the hEX can do the job of using any two Ethernet ports as WAN, i am pretty sure I'll go for them. Otherwise, I'll go higher on specs until I find the correct one for my use case.

You can still use the previous suggestion of hap ac2.
About the same price point, a bit more powerful processor (arm based) and you can simply disable wifi if you really don't want to use it.

Thanks guys, I specifically didnt mention the wifi, so that the OP didnt get confused and think he had to use the WIFI it was available.
This is not the case.

SIMPLY Do not turn wifi on, disable it and consider it not there.
It will out perform the hex at the same price and has five ports as well.
Its a no brainer decision.

Completely agree. I think there is more stock for hap ac2 so I'll go for it.

Thank you so much guys.

Looking around I saw hAP AC3, which seems to have higher specs than hAP ac2. I guess I'll be able to use any two Ethernet ports as WAN, won't I?

Sure.
And then a new opportunity reveals itself. hAP AC3 allows usage of wifiwave2 package which makes wifi half-way decent if your requirements are not too high.
(anav will surely come down on me for writing this  )

In all seriousness: I have 200/20 ISP line at home, 2 hAP AC3 as AP (using Hex as router) and zero problems with the wifi part.
If you need more then 400-ish on the wifi side, you probably will have to look at other APs.

But like ac2, ac3 can also be perfectly used as a router without the wifi part being enabled.
Just presenting the options :D

One (maybe minor) detail: you HAVE to attach the antenna's to that device if you plan on activating wifi.
And hAP AC3 has 'BIG EARS' when those antenna's are mounted ...

Thank you for this reply.

I didn't mentioned in the initial post, but the setup will be:
WAN 1: LHG LTE6
WAN 2: Starlink
Router: hAP AC3 (the winner so far)
LAN: ...

In my setup there is no requirement for Wireless as the router is in a spear room acting as CPD for the home lab. Then from that CPD room there a ethernet net connecting several points.

Yes, dont be be a sucker for punishment wifi=disabled :-)

Hey on your starlink do you have the newer square shaped dish or the round one.
I have the round one but received it so late like in October, that by January I cancelled my subscription but kept the antenna to renew it some time down the line.
I wasnt going up to my roof to try a DIY install in winter LOL.

To be honest I don't have the Starlink antenna yet, it will come mid August or so. I am just getting prepared. I guess I'll get the square dish, but not sure. However, I'll buy the Ethernet Adapter from the Starlink shop so I can plug the hAP AC3 without any issues.
