Looks sweet !

It's a pity though in the video he claims "I constantly see speeds above 800mb" yet the speedtest screen shown at that moment clearly shows below 800 all the time.

1GB RAM... I wonder when we will finally get RAMDISK on devices like that, otherwise it will be useless to have it.
Let's see how much FLASH we get this time :-)

hAP ac2 already had PoE in. It is only the PoE out that is new. And hopefully now it is 802.11af/at instead if "passive PoE"...

Too bad though PoE In and Out are on the same port from what I can see.
What would be the logic behind that ?

hAP ac3 should already provide most of what hAP ax2 has to offer... no need to buy a new one again, I would say.

I don't understand that either. I would expect the PoE out on ether5. But maybe it saves some components...

This is smallest dual-band ax device i have seen so far - i think this is one of many compromises they had to make for this form factor.
would be good to know price, that might also explain a lot.

Well, I totally agree with you. Normis stated that MT does not restrict their clients with a subscription. But, I consider a small disk a restriction.

I guess 128 MB or maximum 256 MB. It will be able to run the new wifiwave drivers....where you can already see the supporteed chipset...

IPQ 4019
IPQ 5018
IPQ 6018
IPQ 8074
IPQ 8074v2
QCA9888
QCA9984

So we can guess which chiset is in the hAP ax2. Probably it will be IPQ 8074, so Im worried about high price. Even hAP AC3, with wifi 5 cost as wifi 6 routers competitors....

Do some research before posting, if you don't own the device.
https://mikrotik.com/product/hap_ac2#fn ... ifications
USB slot type USB type A
You can almost see it in the gallery too https://mikrotik.com/product/hap_ac2#fndtn-gallery
Short version: hAP ac2 has an USB port, USB2.0, but it has it.

hAP ac² and hAP ac³ do have USB port.

hAP ac³ could it do power daisy-chain just as the hAP ac Lite or cAP ac ?

Wonder about the "rubber feel" paint. You know the paint that becomes very sticky over time.
Think that hAP ax² is better paint.
Size matters, and that's closer to hAP ac² again.

Got my hAP ac³ 2 days ago. Will test it. Maybe later the hAP ax²

Very happy that MIkrotik has not abandoned the form factor of the HAP AC2, small and compact perfect for every use and not too big like HAP AC3! Congratulations guys!

If I can suffer two things from this new product it is to add two front LEDs for the two wifi interfaces (2.4 and 5 Ghz) maybe one orange (2.4) and one blue or green (5). Maybe by moving the Power and USR LEDs also frontally.

In fact, I find it very uncomfortable on HAP AC2 to have the Ethernet LEDs on the front and USR and Power behind and above all the lack of LEDs for the Wireless. In many AC2 installations I cannot see its rear so I cannot see the PWR and USR LEDs. Even the USR LED that I use a lot for various applications on HAP AC2 is like not having it because it is rear, all the LEDs must be front for me.

Two more things:

1. flash memory of at least 128 MB or 256 for ROS7 and Container
2. Internal beep like RB951 ?? It would be a sensational best buy!

Anyway congratulations on keeping the compact form factor, I was afraid that only the oversized AC3 style remained alive.

PS. Too bad for the lack of USB

I really hope the (real world) release of this hardware is what indicates the integration of ac-wave2 into RouterOS (edit: specifically CAPsMAN). Whilst having the wave2 package is great, having to make it a special case is a real pain.

Also, cAP AX^2 when? 😁

I don't know... Antenna gain invariably comes with directivity. The directivity could be different for the chains, and it could help in that case, but normally more antenna gain means less transmitter output, and you only gain some receive sensitivity.

No, only the devices with 16MB FLASH and >32MB RAM do have RAMdisk.
Its main purpose is to have space to download updates into the RAMdisk and then apply them to the (too small) FLASH.
Devices with >16MB FLASH do not have this feature, they download the updates into the flash.

However, having RAMdisk can also be useful as scratcpad for user scripts, to hold containers, as proxy cache, and generic file storage.
So it would be useful when all devices with >32MB RAM enabled the RAMdisk. E.g. in a /ramdisk directory in the files space.

1GB RAM, nice,

wifi 6 but no more than 1G port.....for this size, it's.......fine.

but no usb....no sd......
≈ zero expect on container, no where to store the image (ohoh, miss one way to utlize 1GB RAM)
≈ no more storage (smb, protable pxe server, dude, etc etc..)
≈ no usb lte modem (which useful on ac2, carry on the go)

have 4 x hap ac2, really like it, works well and fit multiple needs
will this replace ac2, not sure, let's see how price change.

128MB will be the new 16MB, it seems... how long until that again is a bottleneck?

The device will be ROS 7 only as well which isn't exactly the most stable platform,....
For simple wifi and routing ?
More then stable enough.

you are right tx power looks like this:

maybe is some kind of effort to reduce heat and maintain power consumption under control for such a small device
Operating temperature -40°C to +50°C
says me that will be a little hot device

Looks promising, 2.5GbE would been nice but probably didn't fit into the ~100€ (including VAT) price point. Let's hope it is stable, hap ac2 was a pita until MT fixed the 5GHz interface crashes.

Now the questions are:

1. Will it support beam forming?
2. Will it support fast roaming between different APs?
3. We can all say "Yes" to #1 and #2, but the follow-up question would be: When?
4. And what about CAPsMAN support?

I am happy for MT to finally showing signs of catching up the train, but I already spent my money elsewhere :/ Will continue to use RB4011 for routing needs nevertheless.

1. yes, included in wifiwave2
2. yes, 802.11 w, 802.11 r, 802.11 k included already in the latest 7.5 ROS
3. already
4. CAPsMAN support for wifiwave already confirmed from Mikrotik - soon

Did I wrote 802.11 v ??????
Nope. But you cannot not mention the missing piece of the puzzle.
He asked fast roaming........

802.11r
When your device roams from one AP to another on the same network, 802.11r uses a feature called Fast Basic Service Set Transition (FT) to authenticate more quickly. FT works with both preshared key (PSK) and 802.1X authentication methods.

And thát doesn't work yet either for now. Only on SSIDs on the same AP for now (so moving from 2.4 to 5 and vice versa provided they have the same SSID).
It surely will come but not now.

I bought the hAP Ac3 last week, still haven't gotten it.

So I was a bit concerned when I saw the release video last night that I bought a bit too soon.

After reading around this, I'm sticking with what I got, despite having a number of wifi 6 devices.

Larger enclosure, less heat overall, and once they release an AX access point without the need to also handle the general routing job, I'll get that. It won't need a lot of cpu/ram/storage. Then I can just turn off the wifi in the ac3 and remove the antennas, and use the AX access point.

Anyone see a flaw in that logic? I'm a retired networking guy, and I got tired of buying expensive prosumer routers that end up getting software updates dropped after 2-3 years, for the "new model" they just released. I like to tinker a bit. These appear to get persistent updates and don't cost as much as other options.

This just shows the state of confusion of what is supported vs not and what works vs it doesn't :) Fast roaming between APs is still not supported. Only within the same AP, between interfaces. And beta firmware's should not be used to state that something is supported.
Until something gets GA, it is not supported (as in like officially supported by the vendor if you have a situation where a good portion of your engineering will have to focus on, instead of doing what they should be typically doing, which is net new development, and not bug fixing. Typically 80/10/10 ratio. 80 for ongoing project/feature delivery, 10 for maintenance and 10 for innovation, aka geek time).

I think it is. Offering clarity for people, to ensure they do a proper knowledgeable decision, instead of instantly regretting it after finding out things are still not as expected. Which, looking at a previous post, it clearly shows how it is not clear for the majority.
This is a SOHO device, often targeted at home users, and many won't have the same experience as you probably do. People will for sure do acquisition decisions based on labels (AX and WiFi 6), expecting to have what probably 80% to 90% of other similar equipment's do.
It would be of good faith for MK to highlight what is or is not supported on these devices main pages, to ensure people don't do blind decisions.

please do not write nonsence. 802.11 r is supported from stable version 7.4. In the new 7.5 beta is another roaming support for 802.11 k and 802.11 w has been already supported in wifiwave2 too.

What's new in 7.4 (2022-Jul-19 14:25):
*) wifiwave2 - added initial support for roaming (802.11r) between local AP interfaces;

Ps. sry, "dequoted" :)!

Properties related to 802.11r fast BSS transition only apply to interfaces in AP mode. Wifiwave2 interfaces in station mode do not support 802.11r.

The initial implementation of 802.11r introduced in RouterOS 7.4beta4 only supports fast transition of client devices between the interfaces which are local to each AP.

True. Roaming apparently is a "work in progress". Initial implementation (probably leveraging the support in the manufacturer's drivers) is made now, but it has some way to go until it can support roaming between APs. That requires some backbone between APs, and it would be most obvious to integrate that into something like CAPsMAN. But that does not support wifiwave2, so more work is to be done.
With MikroTik we never know how fast a "work in progress" leads to a released result, so I would not buy new devices based on the assumption that it will work before the client starts complaining!

Interesting how the product code changed. It is no longer RBD52 and neither RBC52. It seems that new hAP is no longer routerboard and remains only boring C52

Totally agree with this. Need USB, for many reasons.
For me since it's new home router, why dont up the 5 ports GbE to 2.5GbE? One for WAN and/or one for LAN. The rest 3 can be 1GbE.
I would change my hAP-AC3 if it has USB plus 2.5GbE ports like my comment up there, even with only around AX1800 speed, but again its Mikrotik.

It's very handy to connect to a mobile network in case your wired internet connection is interrupted. No need to reconfigure your WiFi interface, just plug in an Android phone, enable USB tethering and you are good to go.

For NEXT Home/SOHO Mikrotik Wireless Router, I'll dreaming something like this https://wallystech.com/Routerboard/DR60 ... A-SFP.html
It can use Wifi 6E card https://wallystech.com/Network_Card/DR9 ... -11ax.html ...

1 x 1Gbps Ethernet Ports & POE3 x 1Gbps Ethernet Ports , 1x 2.5Gbps Ethernet Port
1x SFP port
NGFF Slot M.2 (NGFF) “E Key” Socket with MiniPCIe 3.0
1x SD Card Slot <= I think this can removed since not really need, can be replaced by USB Flash Disk for storage...
1x USB 2.0 Port
.....
by any chance you know priceing of this?

Usb serial port
I am sure that the vast majority of home users would never use a serial console, but I find one extremely useful. I was surprised the RB5009 "lab router" didn't have a serial console built in, but at least it has USB.

Will there be any way to have a serial console with the hAP ax2? MB uart pins?

Why not? Poe hat is working 24/7 for last 6 month witout any issue.

Besides, on most MT device which have it I only see USB 5v/1A. Try powering a PI on that (a real PI3 or 4, I'm not talking about Pico)

The thing of it is...
Several years ago I got an email back from Mikrotik Tech support stating... "There was nothing wrong" with my configuration "and because of my environment" there "was nothing" they "could do." This was after getting one email per month for 3 months asking me to "try this" or "that".

I had to reach into my own pocket, and replace hardware on my dime. We are not talking about swapping hardware and still getting RMR. We are talking about PAYING FOR HARDWARE REPLACMENTS to stop the complaining and loss of clients. Or the absolute worst part... a competitor would point to our "SUB STANDARD RESULTS." And win jobs doing it. Those guys can't route for $#!+, so we eventually got called in to fix the routing... but not on every job.

Between losses from replacements, labor to install, loss of clients confidence, and loss of new jobs... our financial losses with in the tens of thousands.

The good thing is this made me COMPLETELY UNTRUSTING OF MANUFACTURES. My testing cycle for new hardware in a MINIMUM of 90 days now. And new AP software for our current vendor... has the same three month test cycle. Our vendor did have a bug creep in that remained uncorrected for 17 months. BUT... using the old firmware... worked just fine for the units installed with the OLD TESTED firmware for that whole time.

Now in Mikrotik wireless, to this day. If we have a URSuck radio on our network... at somepoint the 2.4 radio will stop passing traffic. Restarting the interface will get the unit passing traffic again. But if its in a busy wifi environment. it will happen more frequently. Caps-man will look like everything is fine. But if you try pinging anything that shows as attached to the radio... it fails. So netwatch looks for somethings that doesn't move... and when it doesn't ping... cycle the radio.

The fact that ACv2 is not supported in caps-man, means no MU-MIMO in my systems with more than 1 AC client.

These are amongst a FEW of the issues that have been in Mikrotik wireless for like 8+ years...

Now on the bright side... my Audience running V2 drivers has given me the BEST WIRELESS PERFOMANCE IN 5GHZ I HAVE EVER SEEN FROM MIKROTIK SERVING CLIENT DEVICES. Sadly the 2.4 radio maintains many of its old quirks, even has new problems. Throw in that Access control rules don't seem to work properly either... and I am INTERESTED to see Mikrotik WiFi6...

But pretty far from EXCITED about it. As I expect the regular release and bug shake out. But I am concerned that I might get another... "Ohh well, thats never gonna work right" product.

WOULD I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO BE WRONG ABOUT THIS??? HELL YES!

Will I order 1 and beat up on it? YOU BET!

Do I think I will be putting them in my installs... I really doubt it.

I think this one pretty much nails the essentials

Yes plenty of other things 'could' have been put in but I feel that Wifi6 and higher gain antenna's are by far the most important thing, and would happily sacrifice everything they have in order to make it happen at a good price point
USB is nice to have in some instances, I can pretty much guarantee it goes unused 95%+ of the time. You can still get by without it by adding a raspberry pi or other device and designating eth5 as failover. It was handy to have but on the Hap AC2 but the wifi was bloody horrible so if I have to make that sacrifice, I will. Because Wifi6 and even just Wifi5 with higher gain is going to legitimately be useful in almost all deployments

Bringing PoE out back is fantastic, and I especially like that its on port1. This is way, way, way more practical and useful for a WISP. Port1 is and should be used for internet connectivity and often thats connected to the radio injector. Now can throw that away and just use the AX2 alone with a single power point

Now hoping to see WAP AX, WSAP AX and CAP AX products. But lets first see how the HAP AX performs in the real world, it may be a very early and buggy implementation for 12+ months for all we know

There is (almost) nothing in MikroTik routers that dictates you to use certain ports for certain functions. Most routers just contain a switch chip connected to the CPU, and all ports are equal, function is only derived from the configuration.
In my typical usage scenario, the router would be connected to wired internet via port 1 (usually behind another ISP-provided router) and a wireless link would be connected to the highest numbered port (5, 10) for connection to our amateur radio wireless network. Power is provided to my LHG dish on port 10 of my RB4011 (was a 2011 before that).
For PoE-in I agree it would be ether1, but for PoE-out it seems ether5 is more useful. Some users could also connect a second indoor AP to that.

In theory and on paper yes. In reality no

The reality is port1 is used for internet connectivity, thats precisely why the factory default config blocks on port1, and almost everyone will use port1 for that purpose
There's been plenty of times we've done an installation (or even just pre-provisioned in the office, like say with config scripts) that utilize port1 as the WAN facing port
Having it on port5 meant manually redoing parts of the config to shift it to port5

So yeah in theory fine, could have been port3. Practical and real world usability will tell you that it should be port1
For the argument of an AP, that only works if its a Ubiquiti or MikroTik AP. Pretty much everything else uses 48v/802.3af/at and hence pointless. Doubly pointless if you want more than 1 AP and a PoE switch is in order anyhow

Everyones situation is going to be different. Working in a WISP I can count on 1 hand the amount of times PoE-out on port5 has been truly helpful on a CPE device
Yet hundreds of times port1 would have been. Only downside would have been the enormous pile of spare injectors we'd have amassed

That is why interface lists have been created and should be used. Just move ether1 from WAN to LAN and ether5 from LAN to WAN and everything is working again.
(and when using PPPoE it would be necessary to set the PPPoE interface as member of WAN anyway)
So yeah in theory fine, could have been port3. Practical and real world usability will tell you that it should be port1

Being passive PoE it is kind of pointless for powering the device anyway. Who does not use 802.3af/at? The only viable scenario is to have two MikroTik devices daisy-chained on a single supply (e.g. a second hAP ax2 used as AP) and it now requires your "complicated reconfiguration" in order to connect the AP to ether1.

The vast majority of CPE facing radios are 24v, hence perfect for PoE out on port1 which is also the internet facing interface. It's literally labelled Internet. Just yet 1 more thing to avoid confusion with customers or even techs. I don't want to change interface assignment at all if I can avoid it. More standardization is better
Also beneficial if using a netpower (multiple customers can provide power as redundancy)

For the environments I work with, port1 is exactly where PoE out should be. And no need for PoE in on a CPE oriented device
RB/CCR devices are for a different purpose and I don't care what the output port is, if any

Looks like a nice upgrade to the AC2!
The passive POE is a little ugly though... I was hoping Mikrotik was moving away from that.

For the environments I work with, port1 is exactly where PoE out should be. And no need for PoE in on a CPE oriented device
RB/CCR devices are for a different purpose and I don't care what the output port is, if any
Other small providers than you put a PoE-out switch on a fiber link and distribute this as ethernet to their customers in a building, powering the customer routers/WiFi AP from that central switch.
For them, PoE-in on ether1 is useful.

Personally, I find the design of the device disappointing on the following points

Major
  • No SD card or USB store
  • POE In/Out in one port? - no 802.3af/at - no daisy chain
Why not a design like hEX, hEX S, hAP ac, hAP ac³
Minor
  • Ports are gigabit only

There will always be those who complain.
Put them the USB4.1, the sxfuhdsd card, OpenSIM, modem 6G, the adjustable PoE in/out 12/24/48 with PoE+, 10A for each port, with one unique 50V 100A power source,
and for sure they will complain that it gets hot, that it co$t$, that it is black I wanted it yellow,
and all the bullshit that they have nothing to do with an AX access point.

To everyone complaining about no USB, you do realise majority of us do not use USB port. Its supposed to be cheap home device and there is no need to raise price for everyone with something they wont use.

If you need USB just buy other model, im sure Mikrotik is already working on such new models similar like

You were talking about price here, but if we just stick with the missing USB port and look at Mikrotik's portfolio of products in a reasonable range.
hAP - $45.00 - USB:Yes
hAP ac lite - $59.00 - USB:Yes
hAP ac² - $79.00 - USB:Yes
RB951G-2HnD - $79.95 - USB:Yes
hAP ax² - $99.00 - USB:No
hAP ac³ - $109.00 - USB:Yes
hAP ac - $129.00 - USB:Yes
hAP ac³ LTE6 kit - $219.00 - USB:Yes
Chateau LTE18 ax - $299.00 - USB:Yes
Chateau 5G ax - $595.00 - USB:Yes + M.2 slots
I voiced my opinion and I don't expect Mikrotik to grab their heads and say, "Sorry we designed it wrong!". I'm sure Mikrotik has "some" reasons for this, maybe the price tag, but why not have at least the USB port. This is otherwise a nice and powerful device (WiFi6 - ARM64 / 4C 864MHz / 1GB RAM and 128MB storage), but where to put the Dude or containers?

Maybe this is really just the first swallow and Mikrotik is planning slightly modified models with a slightly higher or lower price to replace some older products.

And please don't stone me for an opinion that is in no way unfounded. And as for the color, exclusively pink with blue, glowing stars

Guys, EVERYONE is entitled to have their own opinion. Doesn't make it right or wrong.
And if a discussion results from that, it should remain polite and specific. Never personal.

You need to understand that most MikroTik products have only a single big chip that does everything.
When they design a product they look at major features, like the number and speed of ethernet ports, the type of WiFi radio, the speed of the CPU and then they look in the heaps of chip promotion material they undoubtedly receive all the time, and select one.
When that chip happens not to have a USB port, there will be no USB port. Because adding an extra controller just for the USB port would be too expensive.

For example, the RB4011, a flagship router from the previous series, also has no USB port. While the low-cost hAP ac2 (the predecessor of this hAP ax2) does have it.
Simply adding a USB port on a device having a chip that already has USB on it is not that expensive, they can do that within the BOM budget. But adding a USB controller is too much extra cost when that is not a feature that is really necessary.

Also note that MikroTik has really shaved off BOM cost over the years, probably considering for every feature "who would really use that?".
Early routers had touch-LCD screens, an RS232 port, and a beeper. That is now all gone.
I sometimes miss the beeper. One would think it only required a simple I/O pin and on-chip timer, and most chips will have it, but apparently not.

I agree that MT devices should have USB port. Not for storage (if somebody wants to run NAS, they should get a NAS device; if sonebody wants to run containers, they should either get a dedicated device with good support for containers or, if they are masochists, get a RB with decent internal storage). But it's often needed to connect wireless broadband modem to be used as backup WAN connection ... or for various USB-to-serial converters or, not to forget about it, to connect woobm (which is, IMO, another big advantage of MT over other vendors).

Hi
I love the versatility of the MT devices so +1 for USB.

More interesting is the test results page, which appeared on the product page:
25 ip filter rules, 512 byte packages, 544Mbps
That's lower than a HAP ac2 with 986 MBps.

I hope that´s going to get better with newer, more optimized releases! The ARM cores of IPQ-6010 themselves should be 20-30% faster for the same clock.

In reality it has become worse with RouterOS v7. maybe the new specs are for v7 while the ac2 specs were still measured using v6.
However, the ac2 speed would also drop when you install v7 on it.

CPU hAP ax²? It's IPQ6010 ? https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/382127563

hAP ax² still has a life as AP, the RB4011 is limited as edge router (no 4G USB failover, no volume logging ... but that logging could be sent off with syslog to another MT with USB.)

It is very hard for an OEM to select the features to include or exclude.

  • All LEDs off?

Maybe they didn't enable WiFi6 on the 2.4 radio?

I mean... if you load the Wave2 driver on a 4011 with WiFi, the 2.4 goes dead.

RB4011 has 2 different chips for Wifi. Most likely the one for 2.4GHz is not supported.
AX2 only has 1 chip.

On AC3 it's the same, only 1 chip. With Wifiwave2, 2.4GHz still works.

I have few questions about features of new hAP:
  • HW accelerated IPsec? most probable (delayed several months after launch)
  • Bridge (L2) offloading? most probable (maybe not so delayed)
  • Routing (L3) offloading? mostly not probable(not even 5009 has it)
  • All LEDs off? most probable (hope so)

I sometimes miss the beeper.
And I miss serial console, user's best friend when something goes really wrong. I understand that having the whole ready-to-use thing is waste of resources, because it won't be ever used on 99,99% devices. What I don't understand is when they add (and they do) incomplete "add your own components to use" version (there are connection points on board) that could work, but then disable it in software, because ???.

-

As for USB and other extras, it's not like every device has to have everything. But it would be nice to have at least two or three that do. As it is now, every model is missing something. That's probably why some people have hopes for every new one that comes up.

To elaborate, let's say that USB is great for optional modem (you can use your mobile phone as emergency backup connection), and some expandable internal storage (SD, SATA, M.2, anything) is great for Dude or now containers. There's hEX S with entry-level price and both USB and microSD. Great start, except for architecture, so no containers. Never mind, let's look elsewhere. RB4011, no USB. RB5009, USB, but only fixed 1GB storage. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, if you remember all those other devices suffering with 16MB. But you know, since we got those containers... RB5009 being otherwise the beast capable of handling anything a SOHO use could need, 1GB is not that much. And it's not just size, killing it with too many writes would be bad too, because whole device would become useless. Fine, RB1100AHx4 Dude Edition solves the problem with storage, even though it's a bit different league. But oops, no USB. Or if you wanted these goodies with extra wifi, it's not better. See what I mean? :)

I agree, is difficult to understand peripheral objectives by MikroTik

I see some clear trends:
beeper, temp sensor, and voltage sensor: reserved for core routers of any size and outdoor WISP Access-points
serial console: only for core routers of any size and switches, big exception, the rb5009, maybe a matter of space.
LCD was a pretty toy useful in some scarce and specific, conditions and moments, but most of the time equipment is on a closet cabinet or rack beyond eye sometimes it gets broken by rude handling of the equipment, I think LCD is gone but we will remember it

I think the matter of only 16MB of storage is very unpredictable, I think some devices will justify 128MB, but for some reason ended up with 16MB

In the end, there is no perfect device for all and each situation, maybe MikroTik can consider the possibility of selling some kind of accessories or plug-able upgrades to improve versatility

USB 3.0 is listed as a supported interface but I'm not sure whether or not that means an embedded controller is included.
Maybe the placement of the USB port by the mode button interfered with the antenna design and they decided not to find an alternative location?

The USB Port on hAP ac2 is pretty unusable, you can't plug some flash drive in it or something else directly, as whatever you plug into it becomes a heat sink extension (as anything plugged into it gets hot fast), so a cable in between was required to not transfer all that heat from the hAP ac2 board to the device.
I'm guessing it's a similar story with hAP ax2 and they just dropped it :)

Another reason can be that the USB support of the chip is internally used for some other purpose, and they decided not to include a USB hub.
When the device is available, people can check what the "System->Resources->USB" button reports.

hAP AX3 will have 2,5 Gbit port, maybe more ports. Let's see if there will be USB. Anyway the USB 2.0 is rubbish anyway, hopefully they wake up and USB 3 will be supported.

I agree some of the design decisions appear to be somewhat unbalanced. I mean, what's the point of 1GB RAM in hAP ax2? Containers could definitely use all RAM you can get, but without USB and small 128MB storage, nobody is going to run containers on it.
I'm sure that much RAM has a cost too. They should have put 256GB instead and reduce the price.

Routers with an unreasonable amount of RAM have been in the MikroTik product gamma for a long time.
There appears to be only a single use case: a number of full-table internet BGP feeds. That uses a lot of RAM, although it is claimed to be less on v7.
However, the hAP ax2 does not seem to be the likely candidate for an ISP edge router... and it appears BGP is no longer really supported by MikroTik.

Currently wifiwave2 requires quite some RAM.

[joke] And seems like MT is preparing their hardware to better cope with memory leaks. [/joke]

At any rate, they do not want to give us access to the RAM (by enabling ramdisk on all models instead of only on models with small FLASH)...

It could also be that under current conditions, that 1Gb RAM is actually the cheapest option for their setup.

Precisely my point - why would a home user need 1GB of RAM? Even hAP ac3 with its wifiwave2 support has only 256GB. Perhaps AX requires even more.
It could also be that under current conditions, that 1Gb RAM is actually the cheapest option for their setup.
This is likely the actual reason. Very often market conditions are such that it's less expensive to get a mass-produced prepackaged solution than a customized one which uses less raw material.

I'm not complaining about more RAM, just trying to understand the reasoning. If ax2 had a USB port, it would be hAP ac2 killer since it's better in every aspect, CPU, RAM, storage, wireless, same form factor, and only $20 more. But now all those customers who need a router with USB (rather than an access point) will have to pick ac2. The next router up with a USB port is more than twice as expensive, so that's a different category altogether.

It would be nice to see an ARM successor of hEX - a router-only model without WiFi but retaining most of hEX's features. In way, hAP ac2 is almost that, but WiFi adds cost, and they cut RAM in half. When it was $69, it was still very good; now that they increased the price to $79, it's no longer an obvious choice over hEX. Again, talking about scenarios where WiFi is not needed.

will be beautiful if:
is ipq-6010 at 1.800 Mhz CPU Clock
with 1GB of ram
128MB of internal storage
USB port

maybe we cannot expect too much performance gains in multi-thread tasks because of narrow memory bus but a notable improvement in single thread performance maybe close to rb4011

off course in multi-thread we can expect modest improvements over hAP ac2 but will be a notable improvement over actual MediaTek hEX

because of that is important integrated storage to overcome the limitations of 16mb

I think these are preliminary performance numbers with much room for improvement/optimization.

Even Chateau 5g ax, declares the same CPU but at 1.800 Mhz and shows the same low numbers.

Maybe the new specs are for v7 while the ac2 specs were still measured using v6. ac2 can run v6 but ax2 cannot, so that would be fair.

  1. 64-bit doesn't really help much with relatively trivial tasks such as packet forwarding.
  2. New devices are running ROS v7 which is known to perform a bit worse than v6 in certain scenarios (most prominently in testing scenarios) but is said to be on par in certain real-life scenarios (such as edge router for decently sized networks).

So before complaining about bad performance based on synthetic benchmarks we should really wait for early adopters to do some real-life comparison between new and existing devices.

Yes, the manual says "don't turn on the device without antennas" ;)

hAP ax2 doesn't seem to feature external antennae, so no need to remove them and no fear of burning Tx amplifiers.

For those units that do have external antennae detachable it is indeed wise to replace antennae with appropriate terminators, such as these (they obviously have to be the right connector type, I guess many detachable antennae on SoHo WiFi devices use SMA type connectors).

WiFi equipment uses "RP-SMA", a modified version of the standard SMA connector where the pin and receptacle are reversed.
The idea was to use a connector not obtainable for end-users, so they would not be able to connect different antennas and be tempted to exceed the legal EIRP limit.
Of course that attempt was completely fruitless as RP-SMA connectors and other stuff (like terminators) are now easily obtainable, and the whole exercise is just a nuisance.
So, when you want to use a hAP ac3 without antennas, look for RP-SMA terminators. I would buy them from Aliexpress instead of Mouser, 1/10 the price and still good enough for the purpose.

Will hAP ax2 support bridge HW offloaded vlan-filtering?
I was asking myself the same question, as the new WiFi Wave2 does not have vlan tag as a option on the wifi interface options.

Does that mean that wifiwave2 also cannot assign a VLAN number via MAC access list or RADIUS? That was the "dynamic" form of this feature. I hope that is not going to be dropped, because it is a much simpler way of having some different networks for different device classes. No need to make a different SSID for each VLAN (reducing the airtime efficiency).

Each ssid gets assigned a wifi itf (just like with legacy wifi settings).
Each vlan setup can contain one or more of those interfaces.

Can't tell about mac or radius assignment but I don't think so. Vlan assignment is determined by ssid you connect to.

This is one of the things that sets wifiwave2 out of scope for my implementations so far. Dynamic VLAN assignment is important, and provisioning one SSID per VLAN need is only a limited workaround.
VLAN is assigned per RADIUS instruction, or via "access control rule" for known MAC addresses, for IOT, Home automation, DLNA devices (TV, recorder, TV distribution converter).
Default VLAN assignment in the wireless driver SSID config (where the SSID and VLAN are on the config screen).
VLAN can be different for the same SSID depending on authorization or after screening the client for security.
Later when dPSK or ePSK becomes available, that would be another dynamic VLAN selector need at the SSID point. (VLAN depending on PSK used)
HW offloading for wifiwave2 interfaces makes no sense for them. The WLAN and wifi interfaces are not connected to the switch, but are served via CPU.
HW offloading does handle the ethernet interfaces, but setting "VLAN filtering enable" on the bridge, will in many cases disable the HW offloading for the underlying switch.
VLAN filtering enable on the bridge is needed for the VLAN tag/untag action of the bridge.

VLAN assignment in the SSID definition page was also in other brands quite common (at least the ones I used)

Well, I agree with @bpwl that it is very bad when this capability is no longer supported...
It was already silly that MikroTik did not use the standard "Tunnel-Private-Group-id" RADIUS attribute but uses the own "Mikrotik-Wireless-VLANID" instead.
Dropping it entirely is the worst thing to do...

Yes, HW offload for wlan does not make sense, but, when using the same device as a AP and a switch, not having HW offload for the wired devices, makes the switch almost useless for any traffic bigger than 300mbps on those underpowered devices.

You are wrong, the topic is about the hAP ax2, HW offload for vlan filtering is something that is relevant for a low powered device like th new hAP (anything below 1.2GHz is low nowadays).
hAP is not a cAP, it is a "all-in-one" device and it is 2022 not having the capability for full gigabit for wired clients is unacceptable, that is what.
Also having the cpu do the work that the switch chip should do, waste cpu that could be used for wireless.

can you, please, indicate (at least one) access point (of any brand) for the home / small office that supports hardware offload between wireless and ethernet?

Maybe I was misunderstood, I'm talking about the wired HW offloading, which is disabled on most mikrotik devices when bridge vlan filtering is enabled, something that mandatory for wwave2 and vlans on ssid.

So I was considering 2 bridges in my theoretical hAP ac3 setup, as some workaround.
- One for the ethernets, No bridge VLAN filtering , but VLAN done in the switch
- One for wireless (and some VPN tunnels?) , with VLAN filtering enabled.
- the ethernet-wifi connection, is the connection between the 2 bridges.

Because I do have cases where massive traffic is passing through 2 ethernet ports at wire speed.
(Not used for the payload traffic of that device, but this creates just a connection point for the rest of the configuration, as failover)
(e.g. Not spot on, but in the same range of potential uses: that's why the Starlink connection passes through the hEX ethernet ports, hEX which actually has other, out of band monitoring, duties, and normally uses 4G connections from SXT LTE)

Ok... of course it is important that MikroTik complete the work on bridge HW acceleration when VLAN filtering is enabled.
It seems that gets stuck every time...
But one would assume that for new devices like the ax2 it at least will be available!

HW offload is not mandatory for wifiwave2 to work with VLANs, bridge vlan-filtering is. HW offload is only necessary for ether-ether performance and doesn't help with wireless (or any other interfaces that are not handled directly by switch chip) at all.

On the other front: I don't think that setting PVID (effectively) in wireless interface config is prerequisite for implementation of RADIUS-driven per-client VLAN IDs or MAC-based VLAN IDs, it would work also if wireless as bridge port was configured as hybrid port. However wifiwave2 driver still has to support VLANs intrinsically to tag/untag certain frames.

The hAP ax2 was designed for the home user and not the Network nerd ….
Home users need a usb 3.0 port. It doesn't have to be used to attch a harddrive or ssd as NAS. Afterall it's useles as NAS, because mikrotik not support modern filesystem (ext4, ntfs, exfat).
But usb 3.0 port on mikrotik device can be used for other thing. As example to save counter/stats, graphing, and logging data periodically to an USB attached SSD. Currently, mikrotik will lose all counter/stats, graphing, and logging data when device is restarted or experience power loss. No need to worry about wear out problems due to excessive writing problems. SSD is much more durable than microsd or usb flash drive. Also easy to replace when wear out.

Hi,
that´s for 1518byte packets, for 512bytes (it´s not the "truth", but probably a more realistic measure) you have now:
hAP ax2 912.9
hAP ac2 986.3

Still ac2 wins if you just want a router, at least with ROS6. And yes, also because of the USB and the lower price. The tests for the ax as opposed to the ac are also missing IPSec. Probably becuse HW acceleration is not yet implemented.

the only tests where ax2 surpass ac2 is on fast-path probably because switch to CPU link now supports more bandwidth improving from 2-gbit to 2.5-gbit

the other test show very similar performance with the expected penalties from comparing Ros 6.x Vs Ros 7.x

surely when comparing ax2 to ac2 both on Ros 7.x ax2 will win but for a close margin

more interestingly ax devices with CPU clock 1.800mhz (Chateau 5G ax) show an improvement around 30% over ac2 except on simple queue test, maybe a memory bandwidth starvation consequence

cumulative advantage of Chateau 5G ax over hap ax2 is between 25% - 40%

will be nice to see an hap ax3 with cpu at 1.800 mhz

It means ax2 could be awful if mikrotik limits ipq6010 frequency.
Hope that mikrotik won't steal the performance that ipq6010 should be.

I do not think so...

HAP AC2 has always had problems with cooling so I guess thats why lower frequency...

I guess..... HAP AC3 will have the same frequency as HAP AC2 but it wil have one 2,5GB port and USB. Hoppefuly they will make it smaller...

My experience is that hap ac2 with IPQ-4019@716MHz and 256MB RAM(early bonus version) can't handle 500M/250M FTTH PPPoE clent without Fasttrack.
Although the ac2's temperature is ok, it is high loading about ~99% without Fasttrack on RouterOS v7 during wired(cat.6) full speed test.
High CPU loading causes the bandwidth drops to about 300M~400M of downloading and increases latency.
Most on-line games work with small packets, and the small packet rate depends on CPU.
This is what I expect to AX2 with IPQ-6010.
AX2 should be a compact high performance router with WIFI 6, and it should not just be like an AC2 upgrading to WIFI 6.

You should downgrade to v6, performance is so much better.

I would not consider downgrading to v6.49 because v7 is more functional such as fq_codel for reducing bufferbloat.
BTW, I feel ac2 wireless also has bufferbloat issue.

Hi,
that´s for 1518byte packets, for 512bytes (it´s not the "truth", but probably a more realistic measure) you have now:
hAP ax2 912.9
hAP ac2 986.3

Still ac2 wins if you just want a router, at least with ROS6. And yes, also because of the USB and the lower price. The tests for the ax as opposed to the ac are also missing IPSec. Probably becuse HW acceleration is not yet implemented.

W
Hi,
does enyone has comparism between HW IPSec acceleration and Wireguard?

I think the HW accelaration is not implemented yet in this deivice. And when it will be it could be as RB5009 horible HW acceleration.

is "normal" with new products, specific development like HW acceleration takes some months to be completed, happened with rb3011, rb750Gr3, rb4011, hap ac2, etc...

today we have the plus of Routeros 7.x aggravating the situation

we must be aware of this and take measures

at this stage this should not take us by surprise

another aggravating is supply chain problems, so do not bet on product and/or features availability in close future

Most retailers don't list a date, I've seen one targeting end of October.

I've already seen it being listed with some dealers as being available but shortly after it became backorder.
So either they really had limited stock (but then I assume we already should see some indications), or they are teasing customers to place an order for when it becomes available.
I suspect the last option.

...
Switch chip model IPQ-6010...
the switch chip in the hAP ax² is a QCA8075 - the IPQ-6010 is the cpu chipset

No, a PHY is not a switch. It is the part of the ethernet controller that sits behind the isolation transformers and controls the signals over the twisted pairs, modulating/demodulating the bits on the wire and sending them as nice 3.3v digital signals to the next chip in the chain, which in this case is a SoC with built-in switch functionality.

Does it have less output power and worse sensitivity than hAP ax3? I don't see Wireless specifications here https://mikrotik.com/product/hap_ax2, but it's in place for hAP ax3 https://mikrotik.com/product/hap_ax3 .
At the same time, FCC shows up to 853 mW for 5 GHz and 704 mW for 2GHz https://fccid.io/TV7C52-5AXD2AXD .

I have received my hAP AX2 - only 80Mhz channel width as far as I can see ?

You can set 160MHz but no supported channel message........

i was hoping for 160mhz but at the end 160mhz is not a mandatory feature of 802.11ax

maybe is not a MikroTIk limitation but the chipset, maybe a Higher end chipset is needed to support 160mhz

in audience and rb4011 the radio supporting 160mhz was a high end 4x4:4 separate radio

it does not support 48V, max is 28v.
It is possible to have difference in power usage, due the internal voltage regulators, they can be more efficient in some voltages and less in anothers.

Also the power source can have same problem.
For example, if the device is better efficent on 18V (not so casual value...)
The power adapter for provide 18V is les efficent than when provide 21V... and so on...

Maybe I'm wrong but...

What can one do with a 2,5 Gb Eth ??

Which MT switch (or router , other brands too) is capable of 2,5Gb Eth ports ?

Why not a 10Gb ethernet (looking towards 802.11ax bandwidth) ??

2.5 (and 5) Gbps are standards that are more popular for twisted pair use, and in cheaper equipment.
10 Gbps twisted pair is possible, but usually it will be used over fiber or DAC (via SFP+ module).

Re: hAP ax² dual band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)

Wed Oct 19, 2022 6:25 pm

I have a hAP ax2 router from today and I am a bit disappointed. I have a UPC 750/200 Mbit link and on the UPC router I get speeds of about 500 Mbit / s over Wi-Fi 5. I connected the ax2 router to it and configured it for Wi-Fi 6. On the iPhone 13 speedtest I only have about 250 Mbit / s.
I also tested some time ago on ASUS XD6 and I had about 700 Mbit / s after Wi-Fi 6.

Is something wrongly positioned?
Please help.
Configuration in attachment.

I'm getting 750+Mbps on mine. Hard to say what is wrong, it can be a lot of different things, like channel utilization, noise and etc.
From the image that you posted, the device selected seems to not be on WiFi6 rates, but, on WiFi5 ones(720Mbps).
To be able to help, we need to see your full config, in text form.
You can get it using the following command:
export
Open a new topic and describe the issue, post the full config, probably in the general section, not in the hardware.

You don´t need 160Mhz to get more than 500Mbps as you can see below:

When I start doing speedtest, the tx rate drops to 600/600, not 1201 Mbps.

Was something lost in translation? convenience doesn't seem like the correct word to me. My understanding was that the reason for not publishing serial numbers is related to cloud backups and perhaps dynamic dns.

For your safety, do not publish serial numbers...

From deepl to Italian

Per la vostra sicurezza, non pubblicate i numeri di serie...

@Buckeye
I'm not English 😂

On the previous post I meant it more like "the museum has a cafeteria for your convenience"

"you better" is more appropriate for what I meant?
"You better do not post serial numbers..."

Maybe someone could suggest to MikroTik that since serial number is kind of sensitive, export's hide/show-sensitive parameters should treat it as such (don't look at me, I'm lazy).

Not posting serial numbers avoids hammering that device with login attempts and other weird shit from forum scrapers. Kind of obvious.

Oh, for the "ip cloud ddns" function you mean? I never use that...
Also, I never configure a device with login from internet enabled. Stupid to do that.

On the previous post I meant it more like "the museum has a cafeteria for your convenience"

"you better" is more appropriate for what I meant?
"You better do not post serial numbers..."
No, I don't thing that reads in English any better. That sounds more like a threat "You better not touch my stuff or I''ll ..."

I think we need to get @anav to put something in his New User Posting For Assistance thread with the reasons not to post with the serial number. Then we can refer to it when stating "remove your serial number when posting your exported configuration".

I am not sure I understand all the reasons. Some would consider it a privacy thing, as they might not want the question tied to them. The main thing is that if use the mikrotik provided DDNS service, that does seem to use the routers serial number in the ddns name, so someone could potentially discover your external ip address if you used /ip cloud set ddns-enabled=yes and also publish your serial number.

But I do wish there was an /export option that would not include the serial number or license key "software id". Although I am not sure if publishing that is bad, I just don't myself.

Just got my hAP ax2, firsts impressions, the wifi is atually good and fast.
How many watts does it idle at?
at 20v I got a reading of ~4.5w
So that's why there's more holes on the case now, my AC2 idles at 3w.

Mine is out for delivery tomorrow and my main goal is to see if it can replace hAP ac2 + Ubiquiti AC Lite, which I had to purchase as ac2 did not reach my office room.

Will post back!

If you have no answer - don't reply. And before replying, please, read carefully.
Mikrotik declared 24/23 dBm and FCC measured 29.3/28.4 dBm for the same device.

It can't be used as CAP (yet), it has a completely different wireless driver, which does not have any CAPsMAN support.
CAPsMAN for 802.11ax devices is coming soon, but all your CAPsMAN network will have to consist of AX devices (or more specifically, any devices with wifiwave2.npk driver)

Hopefully you not saying that we will not be able to have one CapsMAN with multiple AX and AC/N caps which would mean that the cost could be enormous as we would need to change all caps to AX?

Why does the wireless driver matter if they are connected with a wire to CapsMAN?

Because caps-man is built on the old driver.

The AX units don't support that driver.

So they can't be caps-man managed.

I get that but they should be able to rebuild CapsMAN with new libraries that will support this correct?

I've got 5 of these showing up today. In addition to testing the AX WiFi, I'm also gonna build a small SD-WAN style deployment with ZeroTier.

Have been working with an enterprise client on replacing Cisco APs for remote workers with MIkroTik ARM devices to tunnel back to the DC using ZeroTier. These seem to be perfect for that use case and will save over 90% as compared to the Cisco solution.

Exciting times for MikroTik users :D

CAPsMAN would normally be able to do part of that, maybe Dude. But for the new models?

I'm also gonna build a small SD-WAN style deployment with ZeroTier.
I've done some tests between my hAP ax2 and RB5009. Directly connected btest on zt inteface, I get ~200Mbps UDP and 200 RX TCP (from the RB5009) and 120Mbps TX TCP.
I know that there is some overhead due the btest, so the real would be faster.
I assume that you'll be using this on connections that does not saturate the CPU.
I have also discovered that ZeroTier connections between arm and arm64 devices, the performance is really low, I cannot get more than 90Mbps.

I assume that you'll be using this on connections that does not saturate the CPU.

For most remote worker deployments in large enterprise, they care far more about management UI, security policy and ease of deployment vs. throughput. 25 to 50 Mbps is more than adequate for most remote work VPN scenarios in large companies and is consistent with how they are using the Cisco devices.

ZeroTier is currently single core and doesn't have any kind of hw-offload enabled. My guess is that we'll eventually see those added once MikroTik updates the next major version of ZeroTier.

And here I am playing with VXLAN between my hAP AC2 and In Laws hAP AC2.
It is fun to turn their sonos on and pick songs from over here.

However... I found when I put Tiks running Zerotier BEHIND someone elses router... Zerotier didn't always reconnect after a WAN IP change on the router in front of it. I had to flush the connection on the other router or reboot.

Seems hAP ax² doesn't support 160 MHz and 80+80 MHz channels:
 /interface/wifiwave2/radio/print detail
 Flags: L - local
 0 L radio-mac=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx phy-id=0 tx-chains=0,1 rx-chains=0,1
     bands=5ghz-a:20mhz,5ghz-n:20mhz,20/40mhz,5ghz-ac:20mhz,20/40mhz,
      20/40/80mhz,5ghz-ax:20mhz,20/40mhz,20/40/80mhz
     ciphers=tkip,ccmp,gcmp,ccmp-256,gcmp-256,cmac,gmac,cmac-256,gmac-256
     countries=all 5g-channels=5180,5200,5220,5240,5260,5280,5300,5320,5500,
            5520,5540,5560,5580,5600,5620,5640,5660,5680,5700,5720,5745,5765,
            5785,5805,5825
I see only 5ghz-ax:20/40/80mhz, seems 160 MHz is not supported by this device. And via an 80MHz channel and Wi-Fi 6 compatible client I achieved ~600 Mbps download speed.

Can someone compare hAP ac2 & hAP ax2 in terms of coverage zone (bigger, smaller, same) and speed at the coverage zone edges? Thanks.
First impression of the coverage are pretty good. At the far end of the flat, this seems to be around on par with Ubiquiti AC Lite (Wifi 5), if not bit better, after a short bit of testing. hAP ac2 was useless here.

On my M1 MacBook Air, in the same room, I see link connected at 1200mbps on 5GHz, although the speedtest (using fast.com) takes longer to reach my full download speed (220mbps) and likes to hover around 80% mark or so for the longest (around 170-180mpbs). On Ubiquiti's wifi, it would max it out immediately. I wonder what could be the cause of that? It may be a latency issue as I also noticed first 2-3 ping responses from local wired devices take a bit longer before reverting to normal timings.

In terms of channels, 160 MHz and 80+80 MHz appear to be options in the menu, however, once selected, the SSID does not appear in the list of connectable networks.

Gigabit wired connections are fast! Running a speedtest on fast.com rams my max speed as per ISP nearly immediately and it stays there. Pings to local wired devices are consistent at c. average 0.4ms. No complaints there!

FWIW, this arrived with factory 7.5, I've immediately upgraded to 7.6.

Finally, I gave up waiting for ax3 and bought ax2 yesterday.
First impressions are good. Finally, I've got a stable wifi connection speed (around 400 Mbps) with Mikrotik. I was able to reach up to 600 down and 700 Mbps up with AX clients (2 different).
One thing I've found strange: if I configure wireless security profile as following:
/interface/wifiwave2/security/print
 0 name="wpa2-wpa3" authentication-types=wpa2-psk,wpa3-psk encryption=ccmp,gcmp,ccmp-256,gcmp-256 passphrase="SuperSecurePass"
or
/interface/wifiwave2/security/print
 2 name="wpa2" authentication-types=wpa2-psk encryption=ccmp,gcmp passphrase="SuperSecurePass"
Some clients don't see my network (Ring cameras) or failed to connect (Philips OLED806),
but if I configure like:
/interface/wifiwave2/security/print
 1 name="auto" passphrase="SuperSecurePass"
all mentioned clients connect successfully.

Yeah, that is a common issue. Some devices simply won't work when advanced features are enabled on the AP.
Same with enabling 802.11k/r/v which will make some old devices think there is no security (network is listed as open) and then fail to connect.
You can work around it by creating a separate network for such crap, with a separate SSID and authentication configuration.
It is a good idea anyway to have a separate network (with its own IP range, DHCP server, NAT to internet) and firewall rules so there can be no traffic between your home network and that "IoT" network. Then there is no risk of spreading or information access when your IoT devices get infected with malware.

Depending on the country set, the TX-power might be different. (It is for Europe/ETSI). The classic MT driver is using the non-TPC EIRP limit, while the wifiwave2 driver is using the TPC-EIRP limit, like other brands and drivers do. The non-TPC limit is 3dB lower than the TPC limit. And for Europe, the EIRP limit is the TX power limiting factor. viewtopic.php?t=188338
For some countries the EIRP table might be just wrong: viewtopic.php?t=188424#p951804
Usable coverage depends also on the TX power of the client device and the antenna gain of the AP, for a good received signal.

Yeah, I did that.
But the interesting thing is that I can't manually configure the same behaviour that auto does: in my case, it seems, Ring cameras want TKIP enabled for some reason, and if I enable it manually, I'm getting a warning that it will break some clients.

Does the new driver actually have TPC? Or is it just a matter of "when others do it, we can get by with it too"?
TPC is useful to have on PtP links too, but MikroTik never offered it AFAIK.

That's super odd, I have no issues with old devices in WPA2/WPA3 mixed-mode (AES only) on a non-MT AP. TKIP should definitely not be required / enabled on any modern network.

Yes, 160 MHz and 80+80 MHz are not supported. hAP ax² radio is based on QCN5052:

Which is actually from 2020 and support only HE80, HE160 is not supported.

The published numbers show that the performance of the upgraded SoC on v7 is on par with the AC2 on v6 i.e. routing performance should be very good with FastTrack considering the cost. However, I doubt that it will handle CAKE/CoDel or other queue types any better than the previous gen because the individual cores are too weak. Without the AX part, it's more of a sidegrade IMO...

I think MT is cheating on those tests....how is it possible that ax2 has almost the same tests results as ax3?

Both have the same procesor IPQ-6010, but with tose diffrece below...so it is not possoble to have same power.

ax2 4x 814 procesor
ax3 4x 1800 procesor

this devices have small processors with narrow memory bus, this can limit multicore performance despit high cpu clock, even so the soc with 1.800 mhz can be diferential in single core load situations despit the narrow memory bus

There is also the possibility that this recently launched devices may eventually have some optimizations that improve their performance.

Indeed, doubling core speed generally never equals doubling the performance because of other hardware/architecture limitations. This is a small, low power ARM SoC networking platform by design.

The specs say ax2 864MHz, ax3 auto (864 - 1800) MHz

But like the Raspberry Pi 4, without active cooling it will probably be subject to throttling if it is doing something requiring sustained high cpu utilization.

ax3 have probably same cooler as ac3. It's big heatsink so cooling should be good...

We are not in the marketing department. Performance tests are done by MikroTik and published on their site. When anyone can find discrepancy between the specs and reality, we can discuss that here or you can report it to support.

If you send me the devices, I'll properly compare whatever you wish and even post the results you want... Seriously, the published numbers are provided to compare devices in MikroTik's catalog - those numbers may or may not represent actual performance in the field. The AX2/AX3 were clearly designed to be marketed within the same consumer segment class as the AC2/AC3, but with the updated software/Wi-Fi 6.

all your CAPsMAN network will have to consist of AX devices (or more specifically, any devices with wifiwave2.npk driver)
One more reason to provide a stripped down "wifiwave2-light" package for hAP ac²/cAP ac

What I wonder how will new wifi 6 devices work in larger setups with lots of aps/clients and also noise, because curently its misserable expirience and mikrotik performs worse then often 2x cheaper devices...

Wi-Fi is exploding and spectrum saturation is worst every day, for high performance the hope is 6ghz availability to aliviate this

proper deployment and design can help a lot

there is too much hype every time a new generation of Wi-Fi arise but some problems are beyond what a tech or a vendor can do

ax2 has maximum 80MHz channel? Not support 160MHz?
But on UPC router Wi-Fi 5 I have 500 Mbit/s…
You don´t need 160Mhz to get more than 500Mbps as you can see below:

I think the HW accelaration is not implemented yet in this deivice. And when it will be it could be as RB5009 horible HW acceleration.
rb5009, hap ax2 and hap ax3 ipsec numbers were updated on product pages

It can't be used as CAP (yet), it has a completely different wireless driver, which does not have any CAPsMAN support.
CAPsMAN for 802.11ax devices is coming soon, but all your CAPsMAN network will have to consist of AX devices (or more specifically, any devices with wifiwave2.npk driver)
Could you please confirm that new AX capable devices (wifiwave2) cannot be added to existing CAPsMAN managed networks that contain older N and AC devices (even when local forwarding is used on the caps)?

Has been confirmed by MT staff in thread regarding 7.7.

They are (re)considering the possibility where capsman2 might support legacy wifi devices (without wifiwave2-drivers).

Good day friends !

I think i already know the (sad) answer, but... can you please confirm, if is possible to use ".ax band" on new .ax capable devices also with legacy WiFi driver ?
Or it is limited now only to horrible wifiwave2 ?

Thank you very much !

It's been said that AX wireless chipsets are not supported by legacy drivers. And never will be.

Personally I don't share the opinion about "horrible" wifiwave2 driver, it works pretty good on my audience (AC chipset). I don't try to do any illegal things (like cranking up Tx power beyond legal limits). But I do miss some observability available in legacy driver (on pre-ac chips).

Thank you very much for response !

It is not about legal or ilegal things in my own apartment. It is about usability. Sadly im still facing issues with roaming between 2.4GHz and 5GHz and also with multicast. As i mentioned in other post, i would like to benefit from speed, which is really not comparable with legacy drivers. But it is useless, if my devices became offline for half a minute while switching from 5GHz to 2GHz if i go 10meters away of my router... No obstacles, no WiFi crowded area. I remember maybe half year ago was the result the same so i switched back to legacy. But since i have a 1Gbit connection i would like to get some speed also on WiFi and .ax was that time unavailable by MikroTik. Im absolutely disappointed from that, since i really dont know what else to do...

EDIT: since regarding to the topics, im really not the only one struggling this way, i was able to find post about mentioned Tx rates/gain from a guy from Czech Republic. Since im from Slovakia, i think the rates are the same for me also. After research and help from forum, he find out that country setting "Canada" should provide higher output as settings for our country. I made the change, it needs more testing, but it looks like that instead of dropping 5GHz -> be offline for half a minute -> connect back to 2.4GHz, now the WiFi strenght meter drops/decreases on my client devices, but preserves the network. Still getting 150Mbps-180Mbps speeds. Which is totally fine and finally usable (and funny, because i am again 10meters from my routers). But it still needs some testing... If i sit maybe 2metres from router, im able to reach 550Mbps

  • All LEDs off? most probable (hope so)
Does this work for anyone? I set all-leds-off to "after-1h" several hours ago, but the green port leds in the front are still active. With hap ac2 this setting is working fine.

Edit: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... oordevices
hAP ax^2: Turns off all LEDs except Ethernet LEDs
F*ck.

The list of downgrades compared to hap ac2 is getting longer: USB removed, VLAN filtering on switch chip removed, dark mode removed, ...

Just out of curiosity - what would be the max Ethernet throughput if I'd connect 2 x 2.5 GbE computers to it and transfer large file?
Will it cap at ~950 Mbps?

It has 1Gbit ports so when you configure it to have the two ports on the switch (with hardware acceleration) that will likely be the max speed, yes.
Note that in the default configuration the switch will be hardware, but when you add extra config (e.g. VLAN, filtering) it may fall back to software switching.

And I miss serial console, user's best friend when something goes really wrong.
I opened and was thankful to find TTL console headers on the hEX S.. If that hadn't been there, the router would have been bricked..

USB serial didn't work but the TTL points did.. I *needed* to change a setting in the bootloader to recover the router.

I'm interested in this, is there a thread where you posted about how you did this? I have an ER-X that I have a Raspberry Pi "debug/console" cable 3.3V TTL connected all the time. It is really useful. The ER-X has header pins soldered in, the hEX S doesn't (that's not an issue, but I thought I read somewhere that the console was disabled in some versions of bootloader, so even if a cable was connected, it was not "enabled".

On the ER-X, it is required for some things like manual TFTP recovery. With MikroTik netinstall, it may be less of an issue.

My hEX S, the router was stuck on NetInstall in the bootloader..

USB serial doesn't work in the bootloader, needed the actual console port.

Anyone else having issues with devices associating on 7.7beta9 with WPA2 PSK and WPA3 PSK authentication?

I updated two ax² and ended up rolling back to 7.6 release due to most devices failing with a key exchange handshake timeout. Was fine on 7.7beta6.

not officially supported on hEX (S)
but there are JTAG PINs on the top side of the device and 4 UART PINs below (near the SD slot)

I guess your definition of pins is different than mine. What I see on the RB760iGS circuit board are pads for machine testing with pogo pin probes. These could have wires soldered to them, but there aren't any pins like exist on the Raspberry Pi for GPIO, and that's what I was referring to on the ER-X.

The question is, if you connect a 3.3V UART to these pads, does the firmware in the hEX S active them and allow a serial login?

Yes.. Same as every RouterBoard with a console port, it is always active.

As I said, I used (needed) mine to fix my RB760iGS that was stuck in RouterBoot mode. Works for the BootLoader and RouterOS.

And yes, they are just pads.

pins, pads, sockets, contacts ... call it whatever you want them to call.
it's these electrical contacts anyway, which you might need to connect to for your initial question

Grab a support file on 7.8, downgrade to 7.7, if it works again using 7.7, open a support ticket.

Such things can happen (on every reboot, not just after version upgrade) when you do not correctly set the country name in your wifi interface configuration.
When you have not selected a country, it may auto-select a frequency that is not allowed in your country, and that another device like your phone will not allow.
So it is best to select the correct country in your configuration.

Instead of posting a result from speedtest, you could better post config and perform a throughput test with a tool like iPerf.

UNII-3 is a fairly recent addition to allowed 5GHz band. Not every 5G WiFi device has hardware support for it, not every WiFi device had been updated with new country regulations. Support for UNII-4 channels is even less common.

We'd have to know which exact frequency was selected originally to say for sure what was the problem.
