Cisco PVSTP over Mikrotik EoIP-Tunnel

Wed Aug 17, 2022 1:10 pm

Hi,

I have the following scenario:
  • two campus networks with Cisco routers and switches
  • the cisco networks uses Per-VLAN-Spanning-Tree (pvstp)
  • on the mikrotik devices I left the STP-config untouched (meaning RSTP is enabled)
  • campus1
    • Cisco core router (cisco-router1)
    • one mikrotik router (mik-router)
    • dedicated ethernet connections for each EoIP-Tunnels
    • Gi5/7 to mik-lte1; only tweo management vlans are allowed
    • Gi5/8 to mik-lte2, multiple vlans are allowed
  • campus2
    • Cisco core router (cisco-router2)
    • two mikrotik LTE devices (mik-lte1 and mik-lte2)
    • both create an EoIP-Tunnel to mik-router
    • each EoIP-Tunnel is bridged to an ethernet port and connected to cisco-router2
    • all vlans are allowed on all trunk ports (on cisco ports I configured vlans 1-1000; i did not set a vlan filter for mikrotik ports)
So without working spanning-tree I would have a loop from cisco-router1 to mik-router (via EoIP) to mik-lte1 to cisco-router2 to mik-lte2 (via EoIP) to mik-router back to cisco-router.

When I allow a test vlan on Gi5/7 that is also available on Gi5/8, I have packet loss.
I am not sure if this is related to a spanning-tree issue.
But I want to focus on setting up spanning-tree correctly first anyway.

Since we use pvstp wich mikrotik does not support (we cannot migrate to mstp at the moment), I was thinking if I can configure the mikrotiks so that the cisco routers can communicate as if they were connected directly to each other. This way only the cisco devices will take care of loops and I do not have to care about compatibility for spanning-tree between cisco and mikrotik.

I hope you understand what I want.
In reality my setup is a little more complex, so posting my config might not be a good idea.

On all Mikrotik bridges linking the Ethernet ports to the EoIP interfaces, set protocol-mode=none. They will become fully transparent and won't emit RSTP BPDUs.
