Wireguard Performance and HW-Offload

Fri Aug 19, 2022 5:43 pm

how does rOS process WG processes/connections/peers?

i am aware, it is 100% done in CPU but does a routerboard/CCR with IPsec hw-offload (similar to AES-NI on x86) leverage wireguard connections with such features?

for example, i have 2 hEX-S on a L2 backbone directly connected. they form a WG peering-pair and via that connection there is a VXLAN configured, which works fine. the L2 line i am delivered by a local fibre provider is a 100mbit line.

i just need to know how wireguard is processed. how is it scalable for connectiones more than 100mbit?
as i have set this up in a LAB-environment i got ~200mbit via the vxlan connection (which runs ontop of the wireguard tunnel)

reason for the question also is, for example, a RB1100x4 has some pretty nice IPsec Test Results due to the abillity to hw-offload AES!
