Random wifi client disconnects

Mon Sep 05, 2022 8:48 pm

Hello,

I am having problem for a long time.
My wifi clients randomly disconnect with following message in log:
18:36:37 wireless,debug wlan1: xx:xx:xx:81:88:DF attempts to associate
18:36:37 wireless, debug wlan1: xx:xx:xx:81:88:DF not in local ACL, by default accept
18:36:37 wireless,info xx:xx:xx:81:88:DF@wlan1: connected, signal strength -83
18:37:24 wireless, info xx:xx:xx:81:88:DF@wlan1: disconnected, extensive data loss, signal strength -83
18:37:43 wireless,debug wlan1: xx:xx:xx:81:88:DF attempts to associate
18:37:43 wireless, debug wlan1: xx:xx:xx:81:88:DF not in local ACL, by default accept
18:37:43 wireless,info xx:xx:xx:81:88:DF@wlan1: connected, signal strength -86
The apartment is very small. There is maximum one wall, but the problem occurs even when I am 2 meters away from the router without walls between us.
Its happening on both bands 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
My device is hap ac with latest firmware 7.5.

I am posting my wifi configuration. If needed I will post more.

Re: Random wifi client disconnects

Mon Sep 05, 2022 9:30 pm

Signal strength indicated at disconnect (-83dBm and -86dBm) is quite low, no wonder device disconnects.

The problem when debugging signal strength problems is that one only sees one part of story on any single device. In this case AP sees received signal strength of client, but doesn't know how client receives AP's signal. Level of signal is largely affected by transmit power and client devices are often weaker than AP. The other thing largely affecting both level of transmited signal and received signal is antenna and connections. If antenna is somehow damaged or if connection between antenna and Tx/Rx circuitry is bad, signal in both ways will suffer.

If your wireless clients work fine when connected to other APs, this indicates problem with your AP. It's hard to guess what kind of problem that might be. hAP ac features triple-chain radios for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands with separate antennae dedicated to each frequency band. This kind of setup is not likely to develop antenna and connection problems on both bands at the same time. Since both radios are separate (2.4GHz radio is part of SiC, 5GHz radio is separate chip connected to SoC using PCIe line), it's unlikely that silicon failure would cause both radios behave subpar at the same time.
