map lite - access point setup problems

Wed Sep 07, 2022 5:13 pm

Hi.

Our company purchased about 10 of this units because of the small form factor. Somehow i could get the first one running but now i am having big troubles getting the other units working.
I have to say that i am a plc programmer and i have limited knowledge about networking.
After 1,5 days i did give up and now i am looking for help.

What i want to accomplish is the following:
I have a wired network on the lan side which is 192.168.214.0/24. This network does not have a dns server.
I want to create an (wireless) Access point where i can connect with an ipad so that i can use a vnc connection to a visualisation system on the lan side. So the map lite has to run the dns server and give the wireless units an ip adress in the same range 192.168.214.100-192.168.214.200.

What i tried:
I am using the winbox program. I tried several wizards. I tried resetting the config via the terminal. I also resetted the unit via the button. I updated the firmware to the latest stabel version. I tried to manually set everything up.
The closest i could get is that i did get a ip adress when i did connect to the the wlan of the map lite. I also could ping all the ip adresses on the lan side. But I could not connect to the vnc server. The vnc program did find the ip adress, tried to connect but could not establish a connection.
I tried it with a different brand of access point and i could get everything working. So the vnc server itself is working.

I realy appreciate your help.

If you need more than one PLC with same prog, what do you do???....

Export the config of the first that work ( with "/export" on terminal )
and after a full reset without default, connect with winbox by MAC address and use that export to configure the others
(do not leave same name or IP, if any on config)

I am sorry, but i do not have access to the last working box because it is already at the customer.

But i got it working again. But only once?
What i did:
- Update to the latests firmware 7.5 stable
- Created a Wisp AP in bridge mode
- Created a DNS Server on bridge

Everything was running. My laptop did get an ip adress by connection via wlan. I could see all units on the lan side. I could connect via vnc to the hmi pc.
But, after i did a restart. Everything was the same exept that the vnc did connect but failed loading the screen by timeout.

Before the restart i did an export on the console:

- Created a DNS Server on bridge
You seem to have gaps and confusion in your knowledge.
A DNS (Domain Name System) server allows you to query a device by domain name and gives you its IP address.
A DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server assigns IP addresses to devices and gives network settings.
You created a DHCP server on the bridge.

/ip dhcp-server network
add address=192.168.214.0/24 dns-server=0.0.0.0 gateway=192.168.214.99

What did you do that for? The address does not need to be filled in, since you do not have a DNS server on your network.
PS You gave only a part of the config

Hallo Ca6ko.

Thank you for your answer. Yes, i meant DHCP instead of DNS. It was a mistake from me.

I did a complete reset via console (system reset-configuration no-defaults=yes skip-backup=yes) and set it up with winbox64 again the same way without the "dns-server=0.0.0.0" entry. But it did not work. I got the same problems. After reboot OR after disconnecting the lan cable it does not work anymore. But it does not seem to be constant I got it running again in a few instances.
Also what is strange is that sometimes when i am connected via wlan, I do not see the machines on the lan side and sometimes I do but vnc failes to connect.

I did an export again but there are no more lines displayed as before.

I do not see a problem in the Mikrotik settings, apparently the problem occurs elsewhere.
The only thing you need to correct is the IP assignment, it should not be assigned to the interface, but to the bridge, because the interface belongs to the bridge.
/ip address
add address=192.168.214.99/24 interface=bridge1 network=192.168.214.0

Try the utility IP scan Winbox/Tools/IP Scan, it will show the IP addresses of all devices that are detected in the network. It looks like an IP conflict.

If you do not understand then describe in detail how you work and draw a diagram of the network.

@Ca6ko

Thank you very much!
This was the fault. The ip assignment was set to wlan1 instead of bridge. But it is strange that the wizard sets it wrong?! This was not an entry done by me manually.

Now it works.
Had it running during the weekend without troubles. Restarting the unit works. Removing and putting the ethernet cable back in works.

This is a long-lasting bug, reported on this forum gazzilion times (not sure if anybody bothered to open support ticket about it) and MT seems to ignore it. Sigh.

Realy? Wow.

I guess that partial reason for MT to ignore the bug is that problems caused by this bug are various and showing seldom (most devices configured thusly work fine and few devices configured thusly work fine most of time). So it's hard to prove this is real problem. It's a statistical pattern that some (otherwise unexplicable) problems go away after this part of configuration is fixed. MT support most of time doesn't fix problems that can not be replicated locally (kind of logical) even if the problem is widely known to exist.

I went through the full service request process and they could reproduce the fault. They said they will fix this fault in one of the future releases.
