Connecting two routers with optic fiber

Tue Sep 20, 2022 10:05 am

Hello!

I have a question regarding connecting two Mikrotik routers with optic fiber.

Is my setup correct?

Transceivers: MikroTik S-3553LC20D (Two SFP (1.25G) module kit, 20Km, single mode)
Optic fiber: Single Mode optic fiber with 12(!) strands

Are all the strands in the optic fiber cable gonna work at the same time and are they compatible with the transceivers?

Thank you

yes, for single-mode modules, you'll need single mode fiber/cable.
Check the specs, that the advertised wavelengths and desired distance/length match.

Assuming you don't have experience with manufacturing the proper cable, the number of strands don't count into it, really.
Fetch a pre-manufactured fiber patch-cable with the right connectors already attached.
Check the required connector and polish type, in case of the named module it should be LC-LC / UPC-UPC connector type.

When deploying it in your cabinet, meaning you are not required to pull it through a wall/accross the building through en empty conduit, you'll want Duplex cables.
Otherwise check if Simplex cables will fit through your wall openings/empty conduits.
Something like this: https://www.fs.com/c/os2-9-125-single-m ... sh-type=16

If not, reach out to a trained technician with the proper gear and experience to deploy a fiber cable in your building properly.
