Feature Request: MVRP (Multiple VLAN Registration Protocol) support

Sat Sep 24, 2022 10:36 pm

This is a feature request to add MVRP (Multiple VLAN Registration Protocol) support to SwOS/RouterOS.

I found 3 references to MVRP by searching the forums: But as those were all several years ago, and each reference a single entry in other threads, just figured to throw this out there as a separate thread for a single new feature.

Details on the protocol can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_ ... n_Protocol

Background:

In our environment, we rely heavily on GVRP/MVRP, utilizing it across our network of over 3K switches. Unfortunately, it seems not many vendors support this protocol (and some who do support it rather poorly). Originally the network was built upon Cabletron gear, so it was "a Cabletron shop". Then Cabletron spun itself into 3 companies in the early 2000s, with Enterasys taking over the hardware. So it became "an Enterasys shop." Many years later, Extreme Networks bought Enterasys.

So today one might call us an "Extreme shop", though I believe that term gives the impression of a single vendor environ like when you say a "Cisco shop" or a "Juniper shop", which it is not. We run over 1/2 dozen NOSes, most from acquisitions Extreme has made over the years (e.g., Enterasys EOS and its many flavors across different switch lines, Avaya, Brocade SLXOS) as well as their own EXOS. Not to mention we also have Arista EOS and Cisco NXOS in our environ. (We also run various other network equipment including F5s, Palo Altos, Infoblox, etc., but will focus here on switching mostly.) But the vast majority falls under the Extreme brand, and one protocol that keeps us tied there is MVRP.

In fact, the size/architecture of the network and its reliance on MVRP make is such that we are in a bit of a chicken and egg situation. We can't really consider or easily shift to using another vendor because almost no one else supports MVRP. And so changing vendors would require re-architecting the network. But we can't rip/replace such a large environment, meaning we need some ability to transition.

So it would be lovely if we had an alternative option, as I could see use cases for Mikrotik gear. Anyway, figured it never hurts to ask.
