routerOS DNS issue

Tue Oct 04, 2022 2:03 pm

Hi all, newbie here!

Router model: RB2011
Firmware: v7.4.1

Occasionally, the router is unable to resolve hostnames despite being able to reach the configured DNS servers, see below

/ip dns print
servers: 1.1.1.1,4.2.2.2
dynamic-servers:
use-doh-server:
verify-doh-cert: no
allow-remote-requests: yes
max-udp-packet-size: 4096
query-server-timeout: 2s
query-total-timeout: 10s
max-concurrent-queries: 100
max-concurrent-tcp-sessions: 20
cache-size: 2048KiB
cache-max-ttl: 1w
cache-used: 32KiB

ping 1.1.1.1
SEQ HOST SIZE TTL TIME STATUS
0 1.1.1.1 56 58 3ms322us
1 1.1.1.1 56 58 1ms955us
2 1.1.1.1 56 58 1ms833us
sent=3 received=3 packet-loss=0% min-rtt=1ms833us avg-rtt=2ms370us max-rtt=3ms322us

put [:resolve google.com server=1.1.1.1]
failure: dns server failure

The router will be fine for weeks at a time, then suddenly start failing to resolve hostnames. The last time it happened, I fixed the issue by removing the DNS servers, rebooting the router, then re-adding the exact same DNS servers, however this method has stopped working now.

I've tried using various DNS servers - 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, 1.1.1.1, 4.2.2.2 - but the issue remains.

Any info / assistance on this issue will be highly appreciated!
