Could I power hAP ac2 from powerbank?

Thu Oct 13, 2022 12:46 pm

Hi! I have powerbank with 18W (12V 1.5A or 9V 2A) USB-A output. Could I power hAP ac2 with it if I get DC to USB cable? Specifications says that max power consumption without attachments is 16W.

And is it possibleto use USB port as power port?

Thanks in advance!

Theoretically yes provided you find a cable to transfer USB output from power bank to DC input of hap ac2.
It will be more or less one hour of operation you can get then (depending on how you use that device, higher load = less time).
My personal view: don't use a custom made cable, too tricky.

Via USB it is not possible to power that device, at least not according to the specs.

Hi as an aside there are POE powerbanks that can poe either 24V or 48v or DC jack.
I use it at home to keep my hap ac up through power cuts.

You can try a QC 2.0 trigger cable with DC jack in the other end, it should let you select 12v, that would work with with hAP, just pay attention to the DC jack polarity.

If you are willing to sacrifice eth1 for PoE, this would do the job:
https://mikrotik.com/product/mqs

Power the mqs via powerbank, power the hap ac2 from mqs.

Proof of concept, with a hap ac3:

@drasir
what's the capacity of that powerbank and how long can you run that ac3 on it ?
Normal use of the device with some clients, I assume ?

Just hooked it up to check for myself.. It's a 10000mAh one from Aukey.
hap ac3 is replaced by rb5009UPr for me, so it is not on active duty. (And is bootlooping right now, might need some netinstall, so i can't test it right now)

My RB4011 is not able to be powered that way.

I have a 7500 Mah POE one and it's survived 4 Hour powercuts.
If I remember I've managed to make it close to 6 hours before.

So far I got USB to 5.5mm cable. I have tried to power the router from powerbank with no success. I guess that the cable is 5V max (no marking on it)...

Using just a cable won't work like that on most devices.
You need a voltage boost converter.
I have gotten many routers to start with 9V.
Would suggest a minimum of boosting to at least 12v for stability.
(Like the https://mikrotik.com/product/mqs already mentioned is an easy off the shelf device.)
Bare board versions are fairly easy to find online if you want to make something yourself (ebay/amazon/ali express/etc..).

You need a QC 2.0 trigger cable and set it to 12v, a cable without some circuit to trigger the higher voltage on the powerbank or use a boost converter.

Perfectly works for a long time.
PowerBank with PD output (20V in my case) + PD 20V trigger ( https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003160923563.html ) + XT60 connector + XT60 to 5.5x 2.4 cable (from Miniware TS80 Soldering ha-ha [yeah, it's not 5.5x 2.1 but it works]) + a little bit of soldering.
But now, it's easier https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003380656890.html - Mikrotik uses 5.5 x 2.1.

So far, I tried to power wAP LTE6 using 12V USB to DC cable. I guess, it's about undervoltage, but I'm not sure. Power led glows blue, but Ethernet ports have green led blinking, once per 10 seconds or so. Powerbank output is 5V 3A.

Have a look at the Mikrotik MQS.
I use it to power other MT routers via powerbank to MQS over PoE between MQS and that router.

My hAP ac2 now consumes 3.8Watt over PoE. (166mA/24V from RB260GSP)
MQS should be able to deliver 400mA/12V when USB power is used to MQS. Not much margin, but should fit.
You don't even need to use the wifi function of the MQS, just the power.
