RB5009UPr+S+IN or hAP ax³

Fri Oct 28, 2022 7:13 pm

Hello,

I wasted a few hours today comparing these two models:
- RB5009UPr+S+IN
- hAP ax³

I liked RB5009UPr+S+IN because of the 8 ports and SFP+ cage and I planned to combine it with my old hAP ac because of the WiFi

Then I noticed hAP ax³ - it support Wifi 6 (and probably better coverage because of the antennas) and has a more powerful CPU
I can also combine it with the old hAP ac of the lack of fewer ports, but I will have to use a media converter.

I am connected to the internet via a 1GB full duplex fiber optic connection (AON FTTH) and to use it properly I need a good CPU.
The old hAP ac works perfectly but I need some new services and so changes are required.

I really need advice from more advanced users on which combination to go for, or maybe something different.

I would go with the RB5009UPr+S+IN more powerful CPU + SFP+ Port and take the fact that Wifi 6 ax is still not fully baked at Mikrotik.

hAP ax³ has more powerful CPU

RB5009UPr+S+IN - 350-1400 (auto) MHz
hAP ax³ - auto (864 - 1800) MHz
This is the main reason I am writing this post.

hAP ax³ IPQ-6010 ( 4x ARM Cortex A53) vs RB5009UPr+S+IN Marvell-88F7040 (4x ARM Cortex-A72)
So RB5009Upr has more powerful CPU and test results back that up.

Тhis was my first choice, but then I decided to look at the other models on mikrotik.com and... the post is the result of that decision :)
Thanks a lot, you definitely make my day.

rb5009 is on a diferent tier/category of performance

rb5009 has at least 2x CPU processing power of hap ax3, despite the simillar CPU clock

rb5009 CPu is an OoO Out-of-order Execution CPU which do more work for every CPU clock cicle, also has more Cache memory, also wider Memory Bus, and faster memory

Because of all this rb5009 cpu has higher performance, and also higher power consumption, is a "bigger" CPU

rb4011 also fit in this category like 5009 but with a older CPU at 32bit but same tier of performance, OoO, cache and memory advantages

the fact that Wifi 6 ax is still not fully baked at Mikrotik
WiFi in general at MikroTik is not even closed to be baked.
I'm a MikroTik router proponent, but do yourself a favor and stay away from any MikroTik WiFi.

Get the Rb5009, you will not be able to max out that beast, let it power a cheap Wifi6 AP like TP EAP610, Bob's your uncle!

BTW not sure if is important for you or no but with RB5009 you get very decent switch chip for a router, with HAP ax you get a "sh*" switch chip
I refer here switch chip functionality !

https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... p+Features

note: this not mean HAP ax is bad, just the switch chip with IPQ is terrible from functionality point of view (or mk still not support it well) .

Heh, this is a "very strong opinion", I do not want go in future conversation since I have similar one for hUI company, however if you're disappointed for some reason from MK wifi or have any specific issue with it, for sure this forum can help with almost any problem, regards :)

If the user just connects the device and set the IPs - Mikrotik will work as advertised.
Once you start enabling HW features - no one can help you.

What you see in spec and functionality is not what you have available once you start enabling different features.

Yes I agree, this is true for any MK device and for this reason they have a range from 20eu to ~1000+eu, however if we talk about WIFI I wonder what is not working as expected ? (let's ignore ros7 for now :) ) My point .. yes they are not ideal but I prefer to pay 50eu for no ideal device which have ROS capabilities and work, than to pay *x times more for device (with better and more expencive chip or antena or something which have a power of microwave) but pointless from functionality or for "smart" device became a "stupide" device if lost connectivity with some sort of additional controller which increase the cost and management effort and people love only because is with easy click click interface ..
