SwOS 2.16?

Sat Dec 17, 2022 5:34 am

Hello,

I received my CSS610-8P-2S+IN today and see that it is running SwOS Lite 2.16 but the latest available from the Mikrotik software page is 2.14. Is my switch part of an exclusive club that receives advanced firmware releases?

Also, I only see a way to configure a static IP for the switch but no gateway or subnet mask, as you see in the screenshot the switch is unable to determine the latest version on the Upgrade screen. How can it access the network gateway if I do not have a way to set the default gateway or subnet mask?

Note that there's SwOS and SwOS Lite. Lite only runs on a couple of switches, like the 610's. Some of those updates came out after 2.14 to handle specific issues on those smaller boards.

You'll need to use DHCP to have it get out to the Internet.

Interestingly I have mine set to DHCP, and still cannot check for firmware updates. I get the exact same error.

It's been said that when connected to SwOS device, by checking for upgrade it's not SwOS device doing the lookup, it's administrative computer which needs proper internet access at that moment.

My CSS610-8P has been this way since day 1. My CRS 328 running SwOS successfully checks and says it’s up to date. MikroTik seemingly hasn’t completely implemented whatever setup in the backend is needed for the css610-8p. To blow your mind even more, search the forums for SwOS 17rc1 for the css610-8p. This fixes a known problem with using the dhcp snooping options in settings. I’ve asked when a final release candidate will be released and was told sometime in the future. Been very surprised that a device being sold has known bugs that can only be fixed if you search the forums and find the link that was given for 17rc1.

Don't know about SWOS Lite 2.16, but for SWOS (current latest is 2.13) it is technically not possible that the SWOS device checks if the firmware version is up to date.
(As @mkx already said). The SWOS device cannot reach http://upgrade.mikrotik.com

A SWOS device can respond to routed connection requests, but it cannot initiate a request outside its own subnet. (It has no IP Gateway or IP subnet defined!)

It is not because everything is on the same browser page, that all information comes from the same (SWOS) website.

The product wiki page says the following:
Note: SwOS uses a simple algorithm to ensure TCP/IP communication - it just replies to the same IP and MAC address packet came from. This way there is no need for Default Gateway on the device itself.

https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/SwOS/CSS610

So SwOS Lite is limited in certain functionality which I expect being labeled "Lite". Just curious why I have 2.16 when the latest on the website is 2.14.

it just replies to the same IP and MAC address packet came from.
Again .... SWOS can reply to a remote connection (over a router/gateway) , it cannot start/set_up/initiate such connection. So it cannot 'connect' to "upgrade.mikrotik.com".
