Range extender/WiFi repeater for car?

Fri Dec 23, 2022 3:32 am

Weird question.

I occasionally work in my car. While I do have phone data, I'm often right near WiFi hotspots, but every time I'm either barely in or slightly out of range.

I'm curious if there's something I can do with a spare or specific Mikrotik device. For example, I have a spare hAP AC I'm not using for anything that else. Is it possible to repurpose it as a WiFi repeater of sorts, connecting to WiFi networks that are just out of range of my laptop and phone? Would another device be more appropriate?

Thanks!

Wi-Fi is not for long ranges. You and other hotspot clients will suffer a hidden node problem. If you are going to do it anyway, use SXT2\5. Connect it to your laptop via wire. use a software-AP on the laptop to connect a phone

Something from Sierra Wireless or CradlePoint would do it much better. Plus they have their own Sim and Modems.

So the car is a "rolling hot spot".

Use the GUI to connect to a nearby hot spot.

Plus the sierra or CradlePoint can have a direct connection to your cars battery, and external antennas.
