Has anyone successfully replaced the CCR2116-12G-4S+ fans with quieter Noctuas?

Sun Jan 08, 2023 1:28 pm

Curious if anyone has replaced the stock fans on the CCR2116-12G-4S+, and what the results were? Any tips or suggestions? Thanks

The Noctua's are thinner, so they don't match up to the heat sink shield, but otherwise they'll work just fine. The fans on mine don't ramp up unless I put in a copper SFP+ module.

You could probably fashion some kind of extension to the shield.

I have the same issue with mine - very quiet until I put in a 10GbaseT SFP+ module, then fans ramp up to 8000 rpm.

I did have luck with one brand, but I forget which one (I have about four). I believe the one that's in there now is QSFPTEK and the fans aren't ramping up.

I think it's because some brands don't report SFP+ module temp. My 10GTek modules don't report and I get lower fan speeds. The Mikrotik SFP+ NBaseT module reports, and fans go on high

High performance switch with low speed, low airflow fans sounds like a bad idea. Unless you use it only in air conditioned office in undemanding setup. They're 5k RPM max while industry standard fans are 8..15k RPM with matching airflow.

All of my 2116's that are in production (serving customers/making money) use stock fans in (mostly) air-conditioned environments.

The one running my home/office network sits by itself in the utility room in our basement, and the (stock) fans rarely turn on. But then, Its load is under 3% all the time.

I have a three CCR2004's, a CCR2116, and CRS312 sitting in a desktop rack in my office. Those all have Noctua's in them and ramp up a little bit from time to time, most likely because they're all close to each other.

Most of us who want quieter fans because they're going on a desk aren't going to be loading these things up to the hilt 24/7.

I replaced mine with a set of ARCTIC S4028-6K fans from Amazon for $40 for a set of 5

These are PWM fans with a 250-6000 RPM range, they also make a 1400-15000 RPM variant

They're much quieter than the stock 4028B12M fans for my use case (a home router for 10Gb WAN so not really pushing it hard at all) and are the full 28mm length to reach the shroud, since it's a pack of 5 there's also one extra to fill the hole between the power supplies!

They are 7.1 CFM @ 6000 RPM compared to the stock 12.95 CPM @ 7000 RPM

Something of note, I'm not sure that the device is taking full advantage of the PWM functionality stated here: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ROS/Health

For devices with PWM fans, as the CPU or SFP temperatures exceed 58C, the fans will linearly increase their RPM to try to keep the temperature at 58C if possible.

However that doesn't seem to be happening for me, I'm still occasionally seeing a cyclic on/off behaviour where the minimum fan speed is around 2500 RPM (this was after I ran fan-detect) It's also jumping from ~2500 RPM to ~5000RPM with no ramp up, as if it's still using voltage jumps to control the RPM. I'm not sure if the quoted statement applies to the 7.9 release like the section before it so I'm going to see what happens with 7.9 when it releases

Additionally I haven't figured out a way to make the 5th fan appear in the System Health panel, but it seems to behave the same way as the others.
