Omnitik 5 PoE ac hardware failure

Fri Jan 13, 2023 8:15 pm

Due to the current shortage of EP-R6 and other UBNT PoE switches, we have been trying out the Omnitik 5 PoE ac mainly as an outdoor PoE switch for 24v UBNT devices. However, at 2 different tower sites, we have experienced total failure after only 1 or 2 days with the unit no longer powering up and no LED's turning on, even with nothing plugged in any of the Ethernet ports. Tried a known working power supply and the unit still does not turn on but we can hear a faint whining noise coming from inside the unit which indicates internal component failure. We had 4 of these units fail the same way, 2 at each of these 2 sites so we were forced to use a different brand of PoE switch instead for these sites. Other sites are working fine, even after many months of usage.

Tested the Ethernet cabling with a cable tester to ensure there are no shorts on the cable and everything checks out fine and the units at both locations were properly grounded. Could the failure be caused by high RF Energy as one of the two sites also has cellular LTE sectors about 100 ft. away? The 4 PoE components which were plugged in were all 24V 0.5A devices which is well below the 1A max per port as per specifications.
