Putting GPer IP67 Case in the ground

Fri Feb 03, 2023 12:02 pm

Hi,

recently our GPeR - encased in GPeR IP67 Case and put in the cable manhole - got flooded (due to extreme weather and drainage system malfunction). The case stayed under water at least few days (up to a week). Because of that GPeR caused a short circuit, which resulted in damaging GPeR and switch, to which GPeR had been connected.

Do you have any ideas how to increase water protection for GPeR? Or any clues about putting GPeR Case in the ground? The only idea we found is to put GPeR Case in a PVC pipe and cover both ends of the pipe with heat-shrink tubing.

Apply plenty waterproof tape on it and you're good to go.

What I normally do is use Dielectric Grease anywhere there could be water issues, filling as much of the cavity of the enclosure as necessary, also put on the contacts and wherever else necessary (in this case the GPer is pretty small and can just fill the whole thing). I don't normally do anything with underground, but I do have to deal with flat roofs that can be flooded and this has worked well. But for prolonged submersion you may need to add an external layer of protection to make the enclosure more waterproof, but then it may not be easy to open/maintain anymore, say also coat the outside in a layer of silicone and around the cable glands. There are submersible enclosures for making connections in vaults/manhole that can be under water all the time. But you will also need to take special care with your cable selection also, pretty well going to be mandatory use flooded/direct burial cable (which are filled with Dielectric Grease, just a pain to deal with), anything else will wick water though them from any holes in the outer insulation and can wick all the way into the enclosure though the space between the wires. If there is any possible way for water to get in it will.
