Hex gigabit POE - High lag, jitter and awful internet experience.

Thu Feb 16, 2023 4:02 pm

Hello, I'm having terrible ping issues and jitter.

Product:
Hex gigabit POE - Router os: 6.49.7

Network setup:
ISP fiber modem -> ISP Router -> Mikrotik Hex -> My computer.
All cable are CAT5E.
ISP connections are: download: 600mbps - upload: 600mbps.

Issue

Out of the box network performance is terrible, in games like League of legends ping will oscilate between 34ms to 90ms, with many package drops making the character jump and whatnot, pretty much unplayable, also random disconnects, even winbox will disconnect and reconnect within seconds.
Browsing the internet has the same issue, sometimes a website like reddit, youtube or even this forum will load blazingly fast, sometimes I get no connection at all.

Note: If I change the Mikrotik Hex for my 5yo mini asus router that only supports 100mbps, no issue at all, ping is frozen at 34ms, no random disconnect, no issue at all.

Default configuration: https://pastebin.com/2cyWSHTq

I spent 3 days reading in this forum/reddit and seemed like QoS issue, I tried setting up Queues configuration that I found in similar posts to no avail, read something about Bufferbloat but I'm not sure if
that's it, this is my result with default configuration https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbl ... 43e067a343

'Optimized configuration' https://pastebin.com/0zLJE87p

Also tried https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... ction+rate

At this point I don't know how to go forward about this Issue and I ask for you help guys, thank you in advance.

The hEX POE is fairly weak in CPU power, 1 core at 800MHz. so the more routing rule and QoS rule you put on it, the worse the result is going to be:
https://mikrotik.com/product/RB960PGS#fndtn-testresults

because your hEX is behind ISP router, I suggest you just use it as a bridge. unless there are specific routing requirements.

Re: Hex gigabit POE - High lag, jitter and awful internet experience.  [SOLVED]

The options are use hex as a switch, use hex as a router (double nat), use hex as a router (normal ) nat.

The latter two selections depend upon what you can accomplish with the ISP router,
a. can you forward ports?
b. even better can you put the ISP in bridge mode and thus get a public IP on the HEX?

Other than that can probably rule out cables as other devices seem to work fine.
Perhaps a power issue although most things are either OFF or ON.

It was a faulty cable -.- changed it and now everything is fine.
