RouterOS 7.8 bricked cAP XL ac

Fri Mar 03, 2023 6:44 pm

Hi all,

Went through the standard update process for 7.7 to 7.8 on a cAP XL ac, and after a long time the device has not returned. Power and user lights on, E1 light flickering, not responding to mac-telnet.

Anyone encountered this before?

Regards,
Graham

After the device starts, tcpdump immediately shows this:
21:03:17.598981 IP 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 18:fd:74:3e:d7:b0 (oui Unknown), length 300
21:03:17.799113 IP 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 18:fd:74:3e:d7:b0 (oui Unknown), length 300
21:03:17.999243 IP 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 18:fd:74:3e:d7:b0 (oui Unknown), length 300
21:03:18.199381 IP 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 18:fd:74:3e:d7:b0 (oui Unknown), length 300
21:03:18.399503 IP 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 18:fd:74:3e:d7:b0 (oui Unknown), length 300
Going through the netinstall process (hold down reset, see the flashing light, see the light go solid, see the light go out, let go reset) seems to make no difference, the tcpdump is unchanged from the above, just a stream of bootp requests.

netinstall itself gets stuck as follows:
[root@emma ~]# ./netinstall-cli -i enp0s31f6 -a 192.168.88.3 routeros-7.8-arm.npk
Version: 7.8(2023-02-24 09:43:52)
Using Interface: enp0s31f6
Wait for Link-UP on 'enp0s31f6'. OK
Using Client IP: 192.168.88.3
Using Server IP: 192.168.88.2
Starting PXE server
Waiting for RouterBOARD...
I've tried the "put a switch in", I've tried "hold down reset for longer" for many values of longer (tens of seconds past the light going out).

Is there any hope for this device or must I RMA it?

Curious ... I also have some XL ACs under my control (a couple more under way the coming days) so I'm triggered by your post.
Will wait a bit moving to 7.8 there.

Already tried netinstall using 7.7 ?
Just to see if it responds differently ?
If so, try the upgrade again.
If it fails again, time to file a ticket ...

Already tried downgrading netinstall to 7.7, no luck.

tcpdump shows that the device is making many bootp requests, but netinstall ignores these completely.

Just tried Windows, also no luck. Different switch, no luck.

I'm not entirely convinced that netinstall works properly.

What environment do you currently use for netinstall ?
I have close to 100% success using linux on an old laptop.

Tried a Rocky8 machine using a spare ethernet port, and a Latte Panda running Windows 10.

My other options are an RPi and a Macbook Pro, neither will help.

I am imagining that netinstall is something cobbled together in the past that only works under specialised circumstances. I see reports of people needing to use Windows XP to make it work. Ideally a routerboard should have a "netinstall mode" that can be assigned to a physical interface that does the right thing without humans needing to fiddle.

I have requested an RMA on the device, will replace it in the mean time.

Netinstall works on all Windows systems, the main requirement is that there must only be one network interface. All others must be disabled.

As Ca6ko wrote, it is important that the network interface used for netinstall is the one and only active network interface on the host running netinstall. All others must be disabled before netinstall is started.

My usual setup to run netinstall is to run in a virtual machine with an USB Ethernet adapter passed into the VM as exclusive USB device.
This is easy to move from PC to PC and no fiddling with network interface settings of the host machine is required.

FWIW
prepped 3 cAP XL ACs this afternoon.
2 times straight upgrade from 6.49.6 to 7.8. It took a looooong time before they came back online but they managed to pull through.
(almost 5 minutes ? Didn't time exactly how long it was but time takes longer when you have to wait  )

1 time I first did a manual upgrade to 7.6, then update on device to 7.8. No issues here, it took considering double upgrade about the same time as the other 2.

3 times no interventions needed (apart from having to set CPU frequency to auto after the update and the config preparation required for their use).

Since Windows in a multihomed environment by default only sends broadcasts on a single interface when packet forwarding is disabled, this can also be solved using small helper tools like WinIPBroadcast, ForceBindIP , Network Adapter Selector and other similar ones.

Aditional to previous good advice in the topic

For sucessful netinstall sometimes is useful to put a dumb switch between PC and Routerboard

Netinstall works on all Windows systems, the main requirement is that there must only be one network interface. All others must be disabled.
To clear this up, having multiple active interfaces is fine, its the type of interface that matters. I always have my wlan interface connected so I can still have network connectivity while netinstalling device but if I forget to turn of one of my virtual switches from my hypervisor it blocks the netinstall process completely.

I have similar issues and bricked 3x cAP-ac-xl for now.
Not on the same version, same symptoms stuck at bootp. the most recent one is from 7.11 to 7.11.2.

After hours of troubleshooting, 7.X netinstall unable to work, both windows and Linux process stuck at pxe boot and reboot. The latest 6.x works.

Try Netinstall 7.12beta3 Testing.
Check both regular and backup booters https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... kuploaders
