No more wireless tools: snooper,sniff,spectral-scan and spectral-history

Wed Mar 22, 2023 5:24 pm

Hello MikroTik,

Why there are no more the following wireless tools:
1. /interface wireless sniffer;
2. /interface wireless snooper;
3. /interface wireless spectral-scan;
4. /interface wireless spectral-history;

Why they are missing in RouterOS V7, WifiWave2?
Do you plan to get them back?

Thank you.

or MT are just looking to the other way regarding wireless subjects ?

wifiwave2 package for 802.11ax (WiFI6) hardware is not made by MikroTik anymore, it uses the Qualcomm driver from chip manufacturer. You get much faster support for new chips, increased speed, a lot of new protocols, and possibly even much faster time to WiFi7 adoption. In turn, you lose some MikroTik custom made toys. Some of them we try to bring back, some of that is not possible. And also, some functions are not even supported by new chips themselves.

We do keep working on the new package and some things are coming back (like CAPsMAN etc).

P.S: sniffer already returned: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... -Sniffer.1

3. /interface wireless spectral-scan;
4. /interface wireless spectral-history;

extremely we need that feature on netmetal, sxt and some similar devices.
what is the point using that feature on map?

Those devices do not use the new drivers. And on older drivers, the features were not available on all chips either...

Lack of spectral scan is not related to wave2 but because Mikrotik started using cheapest grade of 802.11ac/ax chips that doesn't support that feature.
Just look what's Ubiquity doing with exactly same radio chipset with advanced features enabled: Spectrum scans, QAM constellation views, TDMA, ...
As for wifi2, it's sad to see these are basically SOHO grade locked down drivers, with limited options comparable to what you get on any home AP.
I think this is the main reason we haven't seen any new outdoor/WISP hardware for a long time, mostly because with current wifi2 drivers it would be a complete joke, can't even make a transparent link with it.
Long time ago amount of control, customization options and tools for WIFI were main reasons for buying Mikrotik WISP products, but that's long gone.
There is really no advantage to getting Mikrotik WIFI anymore, unless you really need all in one device or for special management purposes.
Otherwise other vendors have APs that have more chains and are 2 generations ahead for pretty much same price. And configuration options are same as what you get with Mikrotik, now that you are forced to use wifi2 on new products. Yes, configuration often sucks compared to using Winbox, but if everything works, you do that only once.
So buying Mikrotik for routing, switching? YES. But for WIFI in 2023? NOPE!

Normis Please create for us a spectral-history using the freq-usage , even if it is extremely slow to do the scanning, but it will be much more useful

Will 4-address mode (station-bridge/WDS, compatible with the older 802.11n/ac devices) be implemented with the new wifiwave2 drivers? Or is it no longer supported by the new chips?
Some nice new integrated outdoor WiFi 6E radios would be welcome too.
