A cheap MikroTik without PoE

Fri Mar 31, 2023 4:55 am

I recently ordered some hap ac2's to install for some of my clients. However, some of them are using PoE standards the router is incompatible with. In this situation the router just powers off. Can anyone suggest a similar alternative model with no PoE at all, that would continue operating normally in these conditions, or point me in the right direction? I chose this router because it was the cheapest and most reliable I could get that could run openwrt with the gui. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

When you use the power brick provided with ac2, it should not accept PoE, I would think ? Does it ?

Other possibility: move the connection towards "the other device which serves PoE" to another port of AC2, not ether1.
You will have to rearrange your config then (since default ether1 is considered as WAN but that can be changed).

*that could run openwrt with the gui.... I think TS will use hap ac2 using Openwrt with LUCI GUI...
If you decide to use Openwrt with it, it's better to ask at Openwrt forum.

Most Mikrotiks (probably all of them) with multiple power inputs will use power from source with highest voltage. But most of them will gracefully fall back to using next-highest voltage source if the highest voltage source fails (or is disconnected).

I'm not sure what would happen if highest voltage source has too high voltage ... probably it would power off as well.

Unless you need all 5 ports... another solution be not use ether1. It's only Mikrotik defaults use ether1 as WAN, which you can adjust in /interface/bridge etc. If the intent was to flash, then in OpenWRT you can use whatever port you want for WAN.

Thanks, you guys have been super helpful. I think that moving the wan port to another ethernet port will proooobably be a good solution.
