RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN with S+RJ10. Temperature problem

Thu Apr 20, 2023 4:55 pm

I have a RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN with passive cooling.
I want to install a S+RJ10.
MT in product details noticed:
S+RJ10 module is supported also on devices with passive cooling, but may require an extra cooling.
How could i add extra cooling in my RB?
The colling should be applied to RB
or on the outer casing of the S+RJ10 (like this: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EfnwlxKXoAAGyfV.jpg)?

Thanks to all.

The S+RJ10 will get super hot (not the RB, that will stay the same). Especially if there is no forced airflow over S+RJ10 it can reach 90 degrees C.... it's pretty bad.

is a very bad idea to match s+rj10 with a rb4011 or rb5009 compact passive cooled devices
even worst on wifi version of 4011

s+rj10 gets very hot and it will transfer heat to the rb4011, maybe temperatures on rb4011 not rise so much but s+rj10 maybe gets hot beyond reliable operation, maybe internal components close to sfp cage will get very hot too without notice.

if i was you i will put a fan in front of sfp cage in that scenario, aditional heatsinks for s+rj10 i think can help a lot but can be cumbersome

So, cannot install S-RJ10 in no one of MT with passive cooler.
I search for heatsink but as i see it is apply in main surface (not this in outside):
https://www.electronics-cooling.com/201 ... ns-part-1/
The dimensions of these heatsink they don't fit in any MT with passive cooler.

Is the only solutions the MT with active coolers?
Are there other lower temperature sfp to rj45 modules that could be fitted?

There is Ubiquity SFP+ module that runs at normal temps, but it's not supported by ROS at the moment, see viewtopic.php?t=193137

all 10G Base T modules have a high power consumption is a inherent problem of that technology at least for now

if you want no heat you have to use 1G Base T module

I want to emphasize that rb4011 wifi version is a hotter device than the only wired version, that is another factor worsening the situation

for example, rb4011 only wired suports ambient up to 70°C, rb4011 wifi version only up to 45°C

even on bigger devices the use of 10 G Base T module requires special measures

Or use 10GBASE-SX and multimode fiber. Cheaper, too.

Yeah, fiber runs so much cooler, as they regulate power to minimum.
If only new motherboards came with SFP+ cage instead of stupid wired ethernet. $600 "workstation" board from ASUS with dual NICs and still no SFP+... C'mon!!

It have the same temp range 0-70oC

I want 10G via rj45.
