HEX S sfp get very hot and causing router to overheat

Sat May 06, 2023 1:26 am

Recently got my hEX S and just got it up and running using the sfp port connected to the sfp module which I got from my ISP.
All working, but the sfp module gets really hot up to the point the hEX S get overheated and just stop working.
It also makes a strange buzzing noise.

Only after few minutes of cooling down, the router can boot up again.

I did see some other OLD posts on this topic, but not sure how they concluded and whether still relevant.

Any ideas on how to solve this?
Bad router? Bad SFP module?
Maybe I can use media converter instead direct sfp connection?

Thanks!

Most SFP modules run pretty warm and some run really hot. And that's the SFP doing, not the device around them. Reason being that for certain uses (RJ45 most notably) SFP consumes quite a bit if energy, but there's only so much surface to dissipate the heat. Slower optical modules (e.g. 1Gbps multi-mode) tend to run more energy efficiently and thus colder.

What device, surrounding a hot SFP module, can do is try to cool SFP cage ... actively cooled devices do it decently but passively cooled devices not so much.

So in short: don't use hot-running SFP modules in passively cooled device (such as hEX S). If it's possible, use cool-running SFP module. In your case (ISP provides SFP module) this is probably not possible.

I understand. Thanks.
Will it help using ethernet media converter, and connect ethernet port to the hex instead of sfp?
In that case, I guess all the heat will be implied on the media converter and the hex will remain cooler.
Would this be a possible solution?

That's always an option.
Depending on where the hex is located, you could also consider opening the case and additionally direct a small fan towards the SFP for forced cooling but I'm not in favor of doing so.
I prefer solutions where one does not need to open/modify the case. It's developed that way for a reason.

You can get small stick-on heat sinks that might help, but without knowing the SFP module in question, that's nearly pure speculation.

With recent versions of RouterOS 7, the hEX line regains the ability to identify SFP module details. Care to share, jhony? I'd like to see the output of…

/interface/ethernet/monitor sfp1

…when freshly booted, then later as it gets closer and closer to failure.

It's a Nokia GPON ONT sfp.
I attached an image of it

I didn't manage to upload an image...
But the exact sfp is Nokia GPON-SFP-ONT G-010s-Q
Is it true that G-010S-A has a better cooling?
Should I try to replace with it?

That’s why I gave you a CLI command. Cut and paste its text output into a “[code]”block.

We had issues with hEX S router overheating as well. There is cooling fan/stand for MikroTik hEX S listed on ebay that made a huge difference for ours.

I attached little mini heat sinks all around the sfp LOL. Look up amazon for raspberry pi heat sinks .
