Router enough powerful for video stream in IKEv2 encryption VPN ?

Mon May 08, 2023 5:06 pm

Hi

I need to transmit some video streams through a VPN connection (the streams all combined are around 20/30M/s). The VPN uses IKEV2 encryption. What mikrotik device is able to sustain such rates through a VPN Link ? (VPN used will be ProtonVPN).

Thanks for help,

Vincèn

Pretty much any relatively recent router. Just did a test from a windows L2TP client to an RB3011 on a 1GB/1GB connection using iPerf to a client behind the RB3011 and was pushing 85Mbit

I've no way of testing IPSec with IKEv2 but performance shouldn't be much different.

I'd imagine an RB4011 or an RB5009 would be much faster due to the better CPU.

Thanks for your help and yep RB4011 and RB5009 looks quite powerful for it ! I went with the RB4011 as it shows more throughput in Mikrotik specs and hope it'll make it :)

In my experience RB4011 will max out at ~400-500mbit/s of IPsec traffic (AES-128-CBC + SHA1).
With RB5009 I haven't been able to push more than 700-800mbit/s (AES-128-CBC + SHA1)
