MikroTik joins the Fediverse

Wed May 17, 2023 12:50 pm

If you are into social networks, we are now also on Mastodon. Follow us here:
https://mikrotik.social/@mikrotik

We will also make a version release bot here:
https://mikrotik.social/@version

Let us know what you would like to see us write about. And if you are on Mastodon already, we'd appreciate a boost :)

To those new to Mastodon. It's a social network that is decentralized, free of Ads, fully in your control, without algorithms. Our server is closed for registrations, but you are welcome to join any community (or run your own server) and follow us from there. Some suggested servers are

https://infosec.exchange/
https://fosstodon.org

or really any other server. It does not matter very much, as you can follow any account on any Fediverse compatible server and can move accounts too.

I can access all the content on https://mikrotik.social/@mikrotik, which you made to be Administrator only for login
I'm following you from the mastodon.social server, but it doesn't show all the posts from there (currently 5 of them in total), it only shows 2 of them.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Also I personally do not recommend mastodon.social, choose another smaller server.

Very sorry to see that the user base will be split even more.
I have seen this on several other forums that I use. Create a social media platform and some people will use that in place of the original forum. Result is that (grabbed numbers out of thin air as an example), 1/3 of the users only use the original forum, 1/3 users only use facecrap (for example), and 1/3 are on both. That means that you just lost 1/3 of the user base (and the resident "experts". Add another social media platform and it splits even more

CONCUR, There is no need for anything else as their is already a discord channel, and the only advantage of that is to talk to someone about their config as sometimes typing sucks.

If the Discord channel wouldn't be run by McBurgers, it would've been fine, but it's not fine.
LE: this post was made before the official Discord server was launched, my reply was aimed at one of the unofficial servers, the one with the dumb rules.

User base will not be split. Those people that wanted to leave Twitter, already left. And those that have no objections to the Regime, are still there. MikroTik is just going to where the users are / will be anyway. Social networks are not a replacement for the forum. They are just additional information channels for people that are there.

Fediverse is a play on the words Federated and Univese. It is a way to interconnect many decentralized systems. There is a social network for photos (pixelfed), something like an ad-free facebook (calckey), a microblogging system (mastodon), etc. there are many free and open systems that can be self-hosted. Using the ActivityPub protocol, they are all interconnected. You can read posts from other mastodon servers, follow photos from a Pixelfed server, and read blog entries from writefreely. It's all decentralized, run by users themselves and does not force ads or other opinions on you by algorithms. No need to be a product to a corporation just to share your thoughts and creative work :)

MikroTik is just going to where the users are / will be anyway. Social networks are not a replacement for the forum. They are just additional information channels for people that are there.
You completely missed my point. Let me give an example. Forum users A, B, C, & D are all very active and helpful members here on the forum.
You create a facecrap group and forum user A loves facecrap and moves over to almost exclusively using facecrap and almost never uses the forum any more. Then you create a discord channel and it turns out that user B lives and breathes on Discord so user B almost exclusively moves over to using Discord. Next you create a Mastodon channel, and user C moves over there and largely leaves the forum.

The result of that is that forum users A, B, and C are no longer available to provide help here on the forum. A new user comes onto any one of the platforms and asks a question - but the ideal person to answer that question lives on one of the other platforms, so their question is either not answered at all or is answered poorly. That's what I mean by the user base is split.

I have seen this exact scenario in several other devices or software that have user support forums. Far better to keep everyone in one place.

BTW, if you decide to move everything to one social media platform, there are many people who ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT go there. That means that they can't get support for their products, and almost certainly will eventually "ditch this crap I can't get support for". Forums may not be ideal, but generally they don't have the "I can't stand [fill in whatever social media platform you want]".

K6cc, bang on, I already visit regularly three different locations when I get bored here, network berg discord, mikrotikZA discord, and IT discord. The moment one of those becomes better than this forum, I would probably spend little time here. But if Normis promises to add Zerotier Cloudflare tunnel as an options package for all devices ( not even part of the OS like wireguard) I will promise to stay. :-)

Hear hear!

Creating side channels looks good for your 'friends' or management but this forum should remain the working horse for communications and exchange of ideas and knowledge. All the social stuff is just a distraction, which some people seems to need to know that they exist.

Take it away, then they, in their world, really stop existing.

So, little help for you. Forum is not competing with social media. Social media is for short announcements by the company. It is not a place for discussions. Chill out

Being very chilled out .. not rocking a boat ... not even getting close to this boat ... you are wrong :) ... social media ARE used as a place for discussion as many or even most of internet users are BOUND to them at an addiction level.
Maybe these platforms are not designed for discussuions but they are used to discuss.
Even Governments nowadays announce crucial info more often via "tweet" or "face" or "insta" etc. than on their official websites.
Just because it's easier ... not better ... just easier.

This shows how forum starts to be bypassed with crucial info which "leaks" in the new area: https://mikrotik.social/@mikrotik/110389938433147844 even if there is one year old topic with thousdands of views.

k6ccc, I feel the same way. I don't like having multiple platforms with divided discussions. Eventually one of those platforms becomes abandoned.

For example, the game PUBG. I used the forums for patches and bug reporting. They got rid of the forums, and now have no official location to discuss bugs. Bug reports get ignored by their support staff. Using Reddit, Twitter, Discord, etc is unreliable. The topic is popular for a day or so, then it gets buried by new topics. There's no way to bump an existing thread with updated information, at least not cleanly like you could on the forums. The same topics get repeated over and over because no one can search for the old discussion and reply to it.
