MikroTik and Empowering IPv6 - a general discussion.

Sun May 28, 2023 3:47 am

I've created this topic just for sharing ideas between MT users and IT related community (be they were service provider, home users, or any other businesses) who would like to deploy IPv6 Network - but still having doubt about how will it work as transition from IPv4 scheme, how IPv6 will impact current physical infrastructure and logical diagram etc.

community members can learn, contribute, ask for how to ipv6 guidance here - by replying to this topic, but let us differentiate the using bold header .

firstable, let us learn what is Ipv6 and its current important component - for us to know how to compare ipv6 terms with those in ipv4 :
ipv6
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6

what is a prefix delegation (pd)
https://www.cbtnuggets.com/blog/technol ... delegation

what is global unique address (gua), unique local address (ula) and types of communication in ipv6
https://blogs.infoblox.com/ipv6-coe/bac ... ess-types/

there are:
- provider independent address (pi) , which we (ipv6 users) can rent directly from the internet register?
- provider assigned address (pa) , which is an address block given by the isp for their subscribers.
- private ipv6 block, similar concept as private ipv4.

there are :
- nat66 and npt6, as the network address translation method for ipv6 to ipv6 - almost similar to those ipv4 nat - they have differences.

https://blog.apnic.net/2018/02/02/nat66-good-bad-ugly/

- 646xlat

there are tunnels to interconnect :
- ip6 to ip6 via ipv4,
- and vice versa, ipv4 to ipv4 via ip6 domain.

well... of course ipv4 and ipv6 are 2 different things - so we need to change our mind set about some terms - or at least we should make some comparison about how things work between the two.

so.. the first question :
- let us say we want to use ipv6 address for the network - using private local block as we want demarcation line between local and the internet,
a. what method would be the easier way to deploy the ipv6? and because ipv6 is so large - will vlans be obsolete? can we still using the concept of vlsm for our lan? /48 /64 /96 /112 etc?

b. how can local lan users access any services available in the network - since no one would type 128 bit address?? 😂

let us have some good discussion, and
thank you for sharing 👍🏻

but... MT users and forum members can have their own discussion here in this MT forum as well, right? 🙂
