v7.9.2 [stable] is released!

Wed May 31, 2023 1:13 pm

RouterOS version 7.9.2 has been released in the "v7 stable" channel!

Before an upgrade:
1) Remember to make backup/export files before an upgrade and save them on another storage device;
2) Make sure the device will not lose power during upgrade process;
3) Device has enough free storage space for all RouterOS packages to be downloaded.

What's new in 7.9.2 (2023-May-30 16:49):

*) routerboard - improved RouterBOOT stability for Alpine CPUs ("/system routerboard upgrade" required);
*) sfp - improved SFP interface handling for RB4011 device;

To upgrade, click "Check for updates" at /system package in your RouterOS configuration interface, or head to our download page: http://www.mikrotik.com/download

If you experience version related issues, then please send supout file from your router to support@mikrotik.com. File must be generated while a router is not working as suspected or after some problem has appeared on the device

Please keep this forum topic strictly related to this particular RouterOS release.

Upgraded my RB4011, 15 mins up with no Rx Drops yet (used to be reported on the SFP link). Not sure if there aren't any yet or that the reporting is corrected.

[Update]
Rx Drops counter is increasing...seems to be unrelated to this release.

Seems strange to release an update with only two items and both of them not security related. What I am missing here?

If the last stable version is not working properly on RB4011 and on device with Alpine CPUs then this is importatn fix.

@erlinden
Rx Drops counter is increasing...seems to be unrelated to this release.
Rx Drops != Rx Errors
And not all switch chip support that value, on some device still 0 not because do not happen, but because there is no counter for it.

That's true, @rextended. Gladly, the errors remain 0 (as did before).

Upgrade 4011 from 7.9 did not go well. The router got stuck at firmware boot prompt, and I had to connect via serial to get it boot. SFP GPON was not recognized after the router booted. Firmware upgrade and multiple reboots did not help. Had to downgrade back to 7.9 and physically powercycle the router to get SFP recognized again. I may have time to try it again later today to see if this is reproducible and to capture supout if it is.

Tried the upgrade again and the router booted and recognized the SFP without issues this time. Guess I should have tried turning it off and on again before downgrading. Sorry for the noise. (the SFP GPON is HUAWEI MA5671A)

I have multiple problems with RB4011 since v7.8.
After some time, the bridge ports stop sending any packets, router is inaccessible. This might be solved with this one (from 7.10rc1):
*) bridge - fixed HW offloading for vlan-filtered bridge on devices with multiple switches (introduced in v7.8 );
However for me, also the SFP port is inaccessible at these times, which is connected to CPU directly on RB4011 so it is not affected by this multiple switch issue (hope so). In this scenario, only hard reboot can help as router cannot be accessed (sorry I don't have access to serial port as this is a remote device).

Also OVPN is really unstable (in general, this is not related to RB4011):
*) ovpn - improved system stability;

These two might be linked together. When VPN connection is lost, RB4011 CPU starts to rise slowly to 100% percent, making it more and more accessible and reactive.
SUP related to this issue: SUP-104880

Anyone can confirm similar issues?

@Mikrotik,
What do we need to do? For you to fix the OVPN issues. These OVPN issues have been around for four months now.

No more zerotrust ?

In all seriousness, OVPN is too widespread to abandon. They need to fix those problems.

Most of us dont have a rocket ship to get there so keep dreaming. OVPN, is like a zit that wont go away....... Lance it cauterize it etc............

And yes HOLVOE, once we get rid of the useless OVPN code, there will be tons of room, for Zerotrust Cloudflare tunnel WITHIN ROS, let alone as an options package for all devices.

OVPN is for those who like dabbling with aftermarket firmwares on linksys routers.......... enjoy!

There appears to be a "new" issue (at least from 7.9.1 but it could be in any version after ~ 7.7) with WiFi in station mode (connecting to another AP), with a DHCP client on the wireless interface.
When the WiFi gets established, the DHCP client does not always succeed in getting an address. When it gets disconnected and re-established, it usually succeeds again.
I have seen it happen a couple of times now, but do not yet know how to reproduce. Did anyone else see this by chance?

Until MT releases a ZT.npk for its products with different architectures, I'm going to keep dreaming about 0O0VPN. You're invited too if you don't snore too much. I know you're going to dream about you're beloved ZT.

Could be an old signed/unsigned C char issue, which in case of bootloaders may be causing a boot loop.

If you experience problems with OVPN even after 7.10rc installation, then please let us know about that through support@mikrotik.com. Several issues regarding the OVPN service have been addresses in v7.10.

The last visible changes regarding OVPN were in 7.10B5. I didn't check the newer releases because no changes to OVPN were mentioned in the changelogs.

ownr, I get it you want to have OVPN working...
29/10/22 is what ... 7.6-chain ? Maybe 7.7 ? Serious ?
At least do the effort then to provide supout from recent 7.10-chain where this still happens.

When the WiFi gets established, the DHCP client does not always succeed in getting an address.
What happens is that the client does get connected to the WiFi network, but sometimes the wireless interface does not go to the "up" state. So the DHCP client does not get an address.
It will remain stuck in that condition until the WiFi connection is interrupted for some reason.
This is on RB951G-2HnD devices, so old wireless code.

The network you are connecting to is also MT or other vendor ?

I have been using station mode quite a bit last weeks (AX Lite and mAP) and can't say I saw this happening.

WiFi AP being connected is from Ubuiqiti or Cisco, have seen it happen on both. We have several RB951G-2HnD and they have been upgraded from 7.7 to 7.9.1 when this first happened, before there was no such issue and there has been no config change.
Normally such a situation will mean loss of connectivity (for me) to the router, as they connect to local WiFi and then setup a VPN over that, but now I managed to reproduce it in a test device that was accessible via ethernet and I saw that state where it was connected but the interface was still down.

The same result, to 7.9.1 I upgraded manually with netinstall and now the same situaion with 7.9.2 Mikrotik 4011 with WiFi RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD, why it can be? Thx.

Not good experience with the upgrades. All my hAP AC2 upgraded without problems.

I had issues with:
- 1 x RB450Gx4 that after the upgrade never came back online (it's 30 KM away from where I am)
- 1 x CRS326-24G got stuck after I reboot second time with the firmware upgrade. I did a hard reset and came back online
- 1 x RB4011 got stuck after I reboot second time with the firmware upgrade. The onsite person reboot it and came back

I halted all remaining upgrades as I don't trust the quality of this version.

The RB450G was born with v6.x, why was there a need to put v7?
But I wonder how is possible to work like this, without testing the updates locally first...
And then you go to put the updates released the day before in a device at 30Km?
But how do you work?
MikroTik will also make mistakes, but "you" who complain are no less...

in my case, reason i got RB450GX4 few years back was because v7 would first be supported for ARM.
all stable 7.x has been good on my RB450GX4 (home setup with vlans,wireguard,zerotier) and have been happy with it.

Hey, I noticed a issue that's present in the most recent update.

On 1 interface, There is an LTE/5G modem sending RAs. In Mikrotik, I have set IPv6 forward to true and Accept router advertisements to "yes if forwarding disabled". As expected, Mikrotik ignores those RAs. After I set Accept router advertisements to Yes, It still continues to ignore RAs and never does any thing with it until I reboot the mikrotik device. After rebooting, It assigns an IPv6 address from the advertised prefix and every thing works. Now, If I set Accept router advertisements to "Yes if forwarding disabled", It still continues to use details from the RAs and does not get rid of the address on the interface and the dynamically added routes.

There are some issues related to wireguard but I don't really know what's going on there.

A minor bug. Some counters are not updated.

For example in the screenshot below, the fp-tx-packets-per-second and fp-tx-bits-per-second counters stay abnormally at zero.

In RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD SFP+ (S+AO0005) startup time in 7.9.2 is around 4 minutes.
I had the same issue with the RB450Gx4 that hung up on the upgrade. It didn't brick, just a forced reboot and came back online after 4+ min.

I rolled back to 7.9.1 and back to normal and boot within seconds!

- 1 x RB450Gx4 that after the upgrade never came back online (it's 30 KM away from where I am)
Few comments:
- Yes I test in my home lab first and the upgrade went well.
- I have updated small clients and went well.
- When I pick this client that is 30 KM away and the device never came up, then it raised a red flag for me and stopped any roll out on other major clients. It came back after a hard reset but took 4+ min to boot, so I decided to roll back to 7.9.1 and everything is normal now.
- On related how I work? Well I don't pick where my clients should be located and is also none of your business either. I just shared my experience to help others have the same issue but you can take it the way you want.

I had the same issue with the RB450Gx4 that hung up on the upgrade. It didn't brick, just a forced reboot and came back online after 4+ min.
I didn't mention I've had a boot problem. Since some OS version the SFP+ startup time is longer than expected what I wanted to show.

@Mikrotik,
What do we need to do? For you to fix the OVPN issues. These OVPN issues have been around for four months now.
Its a subtle move to entice uers to move to proper ipsec or wireguard............. The sooner the better.

I have an IPSEC ikev2, a Wireguard and an OpenVPN setting.
The problem with Mikrotik is you need to have multiple VPN options as each firmware update is breaking one or the other.
Right now my IPSEC and OpenVPN VPN access had been rendered unusable by v7.9. as described in other threads. Only Wireguard is still working.

And Wireguard is not always safe either as I had weird situation when the WG servers went down and didn't want to start up again until I manually restarted them.

You have to be more precise about what's not working. I'm using IPIP tunnels where spoke nodes run 6.49.8 and hub node was recently upgraded to 7.9.1. The IPIP tunnels, which use IPsec as transport layer, work just like they used to (i.e. without any problems).

Strangest release I have ever seen, just to fix someting on the RB4011.
Normally all they say is "downgrade or wait"... never seen such a "intermediate" release...

@Guscht you completely missed the part of RouterBoot fix for all the newest routers, was probably related to the RB4011 issues.

For WireGuard you can create a simple script to put the same name of the endpoint address every 5 minutes and that have worked for me like a charm making it super stable and auto recover. This script is run only on the client / stub / spoke sites only.

This is the script that I use:

/interface/wireguard/peers/set [ find interface=WG_INTERFACE_NAME ] endpoint-address=GW_HOSTNAME_OR_IPADDR

- Replace the WG_INTERFACE_NAME with the name used in your remote router client
- Replace the GW_HOSTNAME_OR_IPADDR with the DDNS name or IP address of your Mikrotik Router working as a WG Server.

Good luck!

absolutely right, i moved everything to wireguard.
Sorry for tangent... is a linux box still the only way to get the pub/priv keys needed to set up the WG connections? The guides are great but "go and find a linux box to find the keys" is just useless.

If you create a wireguard interface and don't specify a private key, it will make one for you.
(And shows you what the public key is)

To make a preshared key, you can create another wg interface, copy and use its private (or public) key for the preshared key, then remove the wg interface. Perhaps non ideal, but good enough.

Sorry for not stating my use-case.
I mean from 3rd-party providers like NordVPN, PureVPN, etc.

Make a new thread. This does not seems to have anything to do with 7.9.2

Yes. You need to have a rule with that routing mark and what table it has to lookup.
Actually I think that is a better solution as it gives you control over the sequence and the "lookup" or "lookup only".
Hopefully it will be made like this for IPv4 as well (of course with warning in the release notes or auto-add of a 1:1 rule)

Hello,

I'm still on 7.9.1 I have same issue with WiFi wave2 + CAPSMAN. (CAP AX as AP).,
wireless,info EE:EE:EE:EE:EE:EE@cap-wifi4 disconnected, key handshake timeout, signal strength -64

re-provisioning - does't fix a problem.
restart router - does't fix a problem
change security parameters - doses't fix a problem.
restart AP - fixed.

Waiting for next release, also postpone order next CAP's AX. So at this moment this result I'm observed on one CAP AX.

My view:
Move to 7.10rc4 (yes, not yet stable) or back down to 7.8.
I've got already 3 cap AX and 1 hAP AX3, all as caps running with 7.10rc, no problems for several days since I installed them.
Using 7.9 on AX2 and AX3 (no capsman) it wouldn't last a day before problems began.

After i upgraded my 2 CRS326-24S+2Q+ pairs of switches in MLAG setup from 7.6 to 7.9.2, i faced with random packet loss between random hosts. After i moved back to 7.6 everything working normally.

We are planning on replacing the core of our network with 2x CCR2216 and 4x CRS326-24S+2Q+ switches on Ros 7 in the next 3 months. How has MLAG been for you outside of 7.6? I have seen a few posts and feeling a little weary. We currently have an aging Allied Telesis AT-X8100 at the core and all servers setup in MLAG with 2x10gb links. It's not been particularly stable on that platform but no network killing events.

The topology would be VRRP on the 2216s with a bonded 20g link to each 336 and 2 MLAG setups between 2 pairs of CRS326s. Have waited until this financial year to bite the bullet but don't want something that is not stable. If its not usable yet I'll just keep 2 of the 326s as swap in spares and not run MLAG until it stabilises.

Have found no issues on our 328p switches on 7.6-7.9 but a recent purchase of a 354 has left a lot to be desired on ROS7 with ports not passing traffic intermittently requiring forced reboots and the disk contents do not persist with reboots so no logging or supouts when it happens.

I have the same problem with HAP AX 3 updated to 7.9 next 7.9.2. After ~48h working this device and no more wifi client connecting and log: disconnected, key handshake timeout. Restart router repair this problem for ~48h. I don't have CAPSMAN. First in Security I set Group Key Update 10 min but problem not solve. Second set to 1 day and actually working from restart device 3 days 1h 28 min. I testing this option for WiFi working property. Please verify that good settings?

It's been "in the news" for weeks now: either downgrade to 7.8 or (better) upgrade to latest 7.10rc.

Does anyone else have issues with their release policy?
We *used' to have all our units on the same version and upgrade them all when needed/required.
Nowadays we have six different versions in the field. just because every unit we now buy seems to have only the latest software and can't be downgraded.
And no way we will upgrade everything out there whenever we buy new unit(s).

I'd really like them to ship the same version for a longer period of time so everyone is able to maintain one (or max 2) different versions out in the field.

I hope not all together....
99.9% of my devices are at 6.48.7 (long-term) and 0,09 are customers who are absent and have the CPE off.
first they were at 6.48.6 and before everyone moved on to 6.48.7 there was a group of "volunteers" who tried it for a couple of weeks...
The ones where I'm forced to use v7.x are at v7.7.
I'll stick with 7.7 until a decent, problem-free version comes out. (7.7 has its problems, but at least it doesn't have those of the 7.8 and 7.9 series)
I currently have no devices where I am forced to use 7.8 or higher.

Well, I "need" to run 7.10rc versions because they have BFD. But it seems that version is better than 7.9
When a 7.10 "stable" version is released (I know what stable means, not stability of the software but stability of the release version...) I will deploy it more widely.
