hAP ax2 documented reset procedure not working

Fri Mar 29, 2024 6:32 pm

hi,

my new device does not do the factory reset.

i setup my new hap ax2:
through default wifi network with my android phone at http://192.168.88.1
i changed the default password (as it asked on first login)
disabled DHCP server because i dont want wifi on separate subnet
i change the wifi name and password (maybe that was stupid in hindsight)
pressed save/apply

i lost connection to device (duh, of course when changing wifi that i am connected to)

status:
the wifi does not show up (not old nor new name)
winbox (via LAN1) does not accept old or new password (wrong password message). can see and connect to all my other mikrotik devices just fine.
winfig in browser (DHCP assigned via LAN1) shows up, but also does not accept neither the old nor the new password.

okay, but now the reset procedure is not working:

Buttons and jumpers
RouterBOOT reset button has the following functions:
Hold the button before powering on the device, and at power-up, the button will force load the backup boot loader. Continue holding the button for the other two functions of this button.
Release the button when the green LED starts flashing, to reset the RouterOS configuration. To not load the backup boot loader, you can start holding the button after power is already applied.
Release the button after LED is no longer flashing (~20 seconds) to cause the device to look for Netinstall servers (required for reinstalling RouterOS over the network).
Regardless of the above option used, the system will load the backup RouterBOOT loader if the button is pressed before power is applied to the device. Useful for RouterBOOT debugging and recovery.
unplug 1 minute. holding the reset and then plugin in power.
wait ~10sec and the blue light goes off, green comes on blinking. wait a couple blinks. release reset.
the green USR light stays on for 0.5-4 seconds (random) and then turns off and blue light on.

if i hold reset 5 seconds longer, the green goes solid. then blue.

pressing the reset button for 30+ seconds after power up, nothing at all happens.

none however resets the device. i would expect the default password to work again. and the default wifi to shup up again.

i waited a couple minutes after each try. no blinking code or anything. how long should the reset take?
so i also tried unplugging and regular start. but the device is still not reset.

any ideas how to force a full reset? am i missreading the instructions?

Use any other lan port then ether1 and winbox to get in.

Use any other lan port then ether1 and winbox to get in.
how would winbox on another port solve it? is the admin password different for each port? Is there a trick to remote wipe with winbox on other port?

i can get the webif and i can "connect" with winbox on eth1. but just the password is not accepted.
i tried all 5 ports, always the same.

my issue is that the reset is not doing a configuration reset.

Default routeros blocks access via ether 1.
That's why.

To hopefully explain.
The default configuration of Mikrotik devices Is with ether1 belonging to WAN and the other ports (set as a bridge) belonging to LAN.
Additionally there is a setting preventing Winbox access from WAN.
So, if you try via Winbox while connected to any port BUT ether1, you can usually access the device.
Of course you need to use "admin" as user and input the "right" password (likely the one you changed initially).
Resetting the device should reset everything to "initial factory settings" and that includes - for the devices that come with the password sticker - the password to the one on the sticker.
It Is possible that you actually succeeded in resetting the device, so the password Is now the original one.

thanks for explaining. i was not aware that eth1 is different.
i tried eth2 and now it detects the neighbor in WinBox. it detects v 7.11.3 (from last september).

still no password/username combination gets me in. not the original password printed on the sticker, nor the one that i changed it to. also still no wifi showing up (that i did not disable).

for initial setup the hAP did not show up as neighbor, but it was connected to my switch on eth0. because it did not show up as neighbor, i used wifi and mobilephone for setup, not winbox.

any suggestions on how to force a configuration reset?

How about netinstall? That would definitely reset it to factory defaults.

Make sure, double and triple sure that you read correctly the teeny tiny password printed on the sticker there have been several reports of troubles due to confusing characters in the font that besides the minuscule size doesn't distinguish enough characters like 0 and O.

The reset timing might be very tight.
Remove Power.
Hold the reset button pressed (on some devices It can be rather hard to press you may want to use a small wooden Stick or similar).
As soon as the green led blinks release the button.
There are reports that one needs to keep the reset button pressed for 1, 2 or 3 more seconds on some devices to actually trigger reset.

If you cannot get It reset, there is still Netinstall, but It Is complex and better avoided if possible.
