sfp+ port and 5gb fiber for rb5009 questions

Fri Jun 28, 2024 6:36 pm

Hey so I just got 5gb of fiber internet installed and see there is only 1 sfp+ port coming off my rb5009 router I'm just confused how I get that to give me 5gb of speed if I can only connect my isp router or ONT to that one port Im just not sure how it works?

Thanks

Obviously a RB5009 won't work to just pass 5 gig Internet through in the way you are asking. You'd need a ccr2004 or better to do that. This is why it is important to determine what your network needs are BEFORE buying Mikrotik gear. OR be prepared to upgrade when needed.

That said, do you really need 5 gig Internet? Do you have devices with SFP+ ports or 10 gig Ethernet interfaces? Some people do so it would make sense to get something better. I don't have that need personally.

What is your network topology? ONT to RB5009 to ???

Well I'm trying to run these nodes through a mikrotik router and to get as many nodes as possible I need a fast connection I could get away with a 2gb connection but 5gb would be better just to have extra in case it bogs the internet down alot. right now bc I want the 10gb connection I have it wired from my desktop right into my ISP's router (eero) and then I have the eero also wired into the mikrotik for my other wired computer devices that aren't running nodes (currently those devices are getting 300mbps connection) and my desktop has already bogged down to 2500mbps with 105 nodes running on the machine the rb5009 can handle up to 500 nodes.

The best the RB5009 can do for regular router services is approx 3gigs However if you do not use any firewall rules around 9gig.
If you add a bridge believe thats around 5gigs..

You want to use the SFP+ port to your WAN connection to get all that throughput, however the most you can pass to anyone node is 2.5 gig through that single port, the rest of the nodes would get 1 gig.

Otherwise concur 2004 or 2116 are alternatives.

I’m curious what type of “nodes” you’re talking about?

Did you consider a bonded Ethernet link to the rest of your network?

What does your topology look like?

its nodes for a new project called autonomi, they're all run via powershell with safenode manager or a little exe program called launchpad

I'm not sure what a bonded ethernet link is? My topology is not permanent but at the moment I have my desktop hooked right into my ISP router (that is running 105 nodes atm) and I have 2 other laptops hooked into my mikrotik router that is connected into the ISP router for the moment being but on sunday I'm getting the ccr2004 and will hook that up directly to the ont

I did a cursory read in that project but not enough to feign expertise or and understanding of the bandwidth/network requirements for that service. You've really provided no details. How much bandwidth does a node take? What speed is your computer Ethernet port? If your computers all have 1 gig network cards, then the RB5009 would have been enough to have a 5 gig WAN with 1 gig devices connected on 5 ports. How many nodes would you have to run to be pushing/pulling 1 gig on your computer? So many questions that are unanswered or unknown and you just want to throw money at this. A CCR2004 still has 1 gig Ethernet ports. Sure it has 2 SFP+ cages but do your computers have SFP+ cages or 10 gig NICs that you could use a media converter with?

yea I have a 10gb port on my main desktop but my other 2 laptops have a 1gb port which is fine I can run like 30 and 50 nodes on those 2 laptops. so yea the 1 sfp+ cage will be good for my one desktop which is where I will be running the bulk of the nodes from. On my previous xfinity connection (I was supposed to be getting 2gb but was only getting 800-900mbps) which is the reason why I switched over to a 5gb connection, I was able to push it to its limits with 100 nodes I had 50 on a laptop and 50 on my desktop but that would bog down the internet alot so I'm just trying to push this thing to its limits without killing my daily internet activities.

Also here is a good thread to read about the specs needed for the nodes:

Also do I need a media converter to plug an rj45 into the back of my 10gb desktop connection? I thought I could just convert the sfp+ port to ethernet right there at the plug with a converter and then plug that into my desktop no?

Yes you can do that. I was trying to understand what your setup was since you didn't give a lot of detail. Just know that the transceivers for 10G RJ45 can run quite hot. Even the fiber ones get warm so you might need to consider a small fan or something like that to cool them since they'll be so close together.

Ok so to get 5gb speed out of it I need 2 10g rj45 transceivers I put one from the ONT into the sfp+ port and then do the other one out to my desktop right I dont connect the router to the ONT with the 2.5gb ethernet port right?

gabacho, depends, when you state 2004, I looked up https://mikrotik.com/product/ccr2004_1g ... ifications
Plenty of spf+ ports :-)

That is correct. The 2.5gb port will never work for WAN since it's only half your desired 5gb speed.

Fair enough my leaping llama. I never have that one in mind when I think CCR2004 but I have to recognize that the all SFP+ model exists. I love my CCR2004-16G-2S+PC, CSS610-8P-2S+in, and cAP ax setup. Absolutely silent with all the features and power that I need!
