Help in choosing a Mikrotik router

Hello,

I need help in choosing a Mikrotik router to use the connection to a VPN server.
Conditions: IPSec/Wireguard cryptography and percentage of bandwidth loss on ISP/VPN connection.
At the same time I want to know the CPU used in the router.

Thank you.

No one has replied so I will offer my inexpert advice. I think a lot depends on your required/available bandwidth to/from your ISP, and if you need a lot of switched ports. A simple HEX will offer IPSec and Wireguard, and (in my experience) is ample for sub-1G WAN connections.

CPUs vary in Mikrotik devices but you can find the one used on their product pages (https://mikrotik.com/products) for each model. Maybe choose one with an ARM chip, as these are more current and may support more features now and in the future. These product pages are where you will also see test results. You can use this to look at the different models (use the "Compare" tool) and find one that meets your performance needs.

Wireguard has no hardware acceleration - it uses CPU. So it pretty much depends on your ISP bandwidth and how much of it you expect to get over Wireguard.

It all depends on the requirements and apart from VPN using Wireguard or IPSEC, none have been given.

For both VPN options, all MT devices can do this (ROS7).
Wireguard is always a SW solution. Some devices can use HW offload for IPSEC (depending on used encryption method).
But even then some routers are still faster using Wireguard then IPSEC with HW Offload.

You may even throw Zerotier in the mix ? (ARM/ARM64 devices only)

Other things to consider:
- added ethernet ports needed ?
- Wifi needed or not ?
- USB storage needed or not ?
...

Requirements. They are not clear now.
And probably that's why there is such an overwhelming response to the initial question :)

Since you didn't provide any budget limit I assume it's not important, the same applies to USB port availability. The WAN speed was not specified so I assume it's multiple gigabit per second.

If you need a fanless device get CCR2004-16G-2S+PC, if noise is not important then get CCR2216-1G-12XS-2XQ.
