Feature Request: IPv6 static neighbor

Sat Jul 16, 2011 6:40 pm

Hello,

IPv6 with dynamic neighbors don't run over managed switches with poor support of multicast. For example on ZyXEL ES-2024A you can use IPTV (MVR+drop uknown multicast frame) or IPv6 (flood unknown multicast frame) but no both.

Solution for IPv6 no supporting switches generally can be static IPv6 neighbor. It's same as static entries in IPv4 ARP.

Does Mikrotik plan Static neigbors support and if yes, when?

Thank for your response

what about client side? RouterOS should be on both sides of communication?..

Yes, I want to connect two RouterOS routers trouhgt switch that is dropping multicast.

In linux is comand
ip -6 neigh add <IPv6 address> lladdr <mac address> dev <device>
but in mikrotik IPv6->Neighbor is not that option

This is the only thing holding me from getting native IPv6 from my provider (T-2 in Slovenia).

6.29.1 and still waiting ;-).

Was this feature cancelled?

Static ARP and neighbour entries seem to me like basic router functionality, I sometimes use it also as one of the "security features".

I've solved my problem by complaining to ISP which upgraded me to a new CPE they just got. IPv6 ND works on the new CPE.

Still... this episode will reflect next month in my tender when I'll be purchasing ~300 routers. Guess what I'll require that they do on IPv6 ;-)))).

Static neighbor = useful feature with lots of potential benefits.

Switch that fails @ IPv6, however.... I would get a new switch regardless, instead of pouring 4 quarts of oil into the old beater every Sunday afternoon just to keep it running, yaknow?

A simple enough thing to implement (let's not even talk about the 5 odd years of waiting).

Extremely useful feature, especially in terms of PtMP security.

Enough reason to look at something other than Mikrotik, that's for sure.

Let's be honest - 5 years ago, Mikrotik was essentially ahead of the curve by having a function IPv6 stack built right into the OS, even if disabled by default. I had to use someone's patched version of DD-WRT on my Linksys router in order to get v6 wsorking back then (I didn't have a Mikrotik at home).... but now, IPv6 is much more common, and the IPv6 functionality of ROS is working, but very much no-frills compared to the things it can do in v4.

I'm hoping that ROSv7 is bursting with new v6 functionality.

After almost 5 years I had to solve this with different devices - some are more expensive than Mikrotik, while some are cheaper.

Come on, Mikrotik, what are you waiting for?

This feature is exactly what we need now. We have version 7.6.

How can I assign a MAC to an IPv6 address without this feature when ND for some reason is not working?
