Routed Public IP Subnet

Tue Oct 15, 2013 2:47 am

Hi All.

I've got a little stuck configuring my public IP block. My ISP gives me an IP E.G 47.32.224.9 and then a 'block' of 8 IP addresses, E.G 47.32.226.16/29.

It's my understanding you can assign one IP to a LAN interface, assign the remainder of the block to clients, and that should work fine.

Below is a diagram to clarify things.

Currently my setup is basically-

/ ip address add address=46.31.228.16/29 interface=VLAN900-GUEST network=46.31.228.16
/ ip route add dst-address=46.31.228.16/29 gateway=VLAN900-GUEST

A client is then setup as 46.31.228.17. I am unable to ping 46.31.228.17 with the above config, as it's being sent out via the default route

HOWEVER the below works-

/ ip address add address=46.31.228.16/24 interface=VLAN900-GUEST network=46.31.228.16
/ ip route add dst-address=46.31.228.16/24 gateway=VLAN900-GUEST

I appreciate /24 is the wrong way to do it.

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? Additionally, possibly a stupid question, what subnet mask should the clients use?

This is a RB2011 with ROS 6.4

Thanks

well actually the first and the last ip in the class cannot be used (assigned).
a /29 class has only 6 usable ip addresses.
so you have to set 46.31.228.17/29 as address to your lan interface.
