Anybody using 24 GHz unlicensed for backhaul, what is the best and cost effective for long distance > 40miles ?
Do you have line of sight between the radios? At 40 miles on flat ground, you are gonna need some BIG towers.
Here is the calculator I use:
http://www.radiolabs.com/stations/wifi_calc.html
ADD: And when you use that calculator, use a fresnel area of 50% if you have minimum LOS.
Mountain to mountain
Then you know the numbers. Go to the link I posted above and run them. But to be honest, I wouldn’t try it. Too far and not enough available power on a good day. Then add a thunderstorm with pouring rain, and it would be “adios, connection”.
ADD: I never see a factor in any calculators that I use for these long runs. I call it “precipitation attenuation”. In a moderate rain, I get about 3db per mile attenuation, especially where there is salt or other minerals in the air.
There is large natural attenuation on 24GHz, link for more than 40miles is brainless idea ![]()
Either the ETSI regulation gives 100mW EIRP.. It is fine for 0,4 miles ![]()
For such large distances are frequencies up to 15GHz which have natural attenuation up to 1 dB per km.
40miles you will get fine with 2 3feet antennas and 20dBm output to waveduction of antenna.

Lucky I did not purchase 24ghz equipment first and then asked questions ?
Can i have more info on the Long Range Airone M7, how good does it work, does it operate in license exempt frequencies?
This sort of Links Need good planning. You’r bound to Etsi Regulations?
Then you should Look for 5,8ghz. But in etsi you might have to use licensed
Equipment where higher Power is allowed.

Good Planning - yes
My first choice is to use if possible unlicensed equipment but not at 5.8Ghz as noise and congestion over the >40 miles maybe or will be a issue, second the cost of annual fee for licensed equipment has increased two fold in recent years, so i will investigate the unlicensed outside 5.8ghz first.
I am aware of some but what are the unlicensed frequencies and power for europe?
