Absolute beginner

Hi everyone, I am an absolute beginner to networks, I got a new Mikrotik routerboard as a gift and I would like to use it to get a US IP address via VPN (I live in Canada and netflix here sucks), but before I get to the VPN, I can not even setup the routerboard, I have a cable modem which brings me 10Mbps internet from ISP and I get one of its WAN outputs to the POE of Mikrotik 750GL, and I use WAN number two on the 750GL to get to a wireless router, but I can not access the default gateway (192.168.88.1) when I connect my laptop directly to the mikrotik routerboard and I get no internet access on the wireless, please let me know how to start!

P.S. your help is really appreciated, I know ppl might have asked this question before but I couldn’t find an absolute beginner question in the forum and thats why I started this thread. Thanks!

Hi,

I would take it step by step. The first thing is to get connected to the router through port 2-5. Leaving all the other stuff for later.

Also i would use the normal power connection and leave POE out of it for the moment. This to rule out any issues in this regard.

To start, since the routerboard is new, the manual should suffice http://routerboard.com/pdf/295/rb750GL-qg.pdf.

From this manual

First use

  1. Connect your WAN cable to port 1, and LAN computers to ports 2-5
  2. Set LAN computer IP configuration to automatic (DHCP)
  3. RB750GL Default IP address from LAN is 192.168.88.1

otherwise

In case IP connection is not available, Winbox can also be used to connect to the MAC address of the device. More information here: RouterOS - RouterOS - MikroTik Documentation

One thing to note that the default port to connect your computer on should be 2-5. If the above doesn't work i would try to reset the router.
The first part of step 1 is not necessary at the moment but can't hurt. Once you have access to the router you can go to the next step and look at the wan connection. After this i would tackle the wireless issues.

If all is working i would look at the POE possibilities.
