ATT WiFi Cellular router/modem replacement

I'm looking for an option to replace this completely crippled router. I can't do nat or routiing or ip passthrough or change mode to bridge mode.

I'm deciding if I should get the Chateau Pro AX as a replacement.

Anyone with ATT service please advise?

For the meantime.

To get my RB5009 back online. I have two Linksys wifi RE6500 extenders. One set to wireless bridge mode connected to the wan port on the RB5009 and the other on the lan port as an AP.

ATT wifi router to wireless bridge to RB5009 and lan access from AP.

So far so good.

I just moved to Western North Caroline from Pennsylvania. The only service here is Spectrum which I know nothing about. I was hoping that some here was in Western North Caroline and can provide some suggestions on internet service. Plus, Spectrum wants $200 dollars for installation and setup service that they won't waive if I wanted to do it myself. I'm a veteran living with my daughter for health reasons and she has ATT as her internet service.

So, I'm thinkings of going cellular route with Chateau Pro AX and if anyone knows if that will work.

Suggestions welcome.

TIA

Just a short reminder:

The Chateau Pro AX doesn't have Cellular built-in.
You'd either need an external modem via USB or something like The LHGG or KNOT embedded attached to it.

Or you can choose a Chateau LTE AX (Or 5G)

And as a sidenote:
I dont live in the US but i do have a European KNOT Embedded and am pretty happy with it.
I also have another modem with a Snapdragon X20 LTE and given the crippled LTE coverage where these modems are located they're fast enough for my requirements.

A better antenna and better placement (maybe on a tower) will make the signal a lot better.

If you really want to go the Cellular route check coverage and Bands with something like Cellmapper and choose the correct device/antenna for your needs

Thank you for replying! I take a look at it. I thought Chateau Pro AX had built-in cellular. I totally missed that!

As far as the cell tower. I can go on my back porch and hit it with a rock! I don't think it's even 1/10 of a mile.

Thanks again!

@normis please add LTE features on the web site when using fthe features filter.

Chateau LTE6-US

US carrier-certified (AT&T, T-Mobile) home access point with LTE6 support for speeds up to 300 Mbps. With 5x Gigabit Ethernet ports, a powerful quad-core CPU, and a refreshingly tasteful design, this device is the right choice for most homes.

I guess I'll go with this one. ATT

On second thought I need the Chateau 5G R17 ax. Need the eSIM one.

Where in the U.S. can I buy one? Ones I found are not available or they want way to much for them!

Id still recommend the AX version because of limited flash on these AC models

CHeck which bands are used:

I'm going to have to wait awhile and just keep my current setup for now.

Correct, that won't work on AT&T LTE/5G network. Only the older Chateau LTE6-US work, which likely do may 50-100Mb/s given it's using LTE (since modem capacity doesn't match the COS on the tower/account/band-scheme).

You'd be better off with a hAPbe3 IMO, and finding a hotspot for AT&T and plug it in with USB. And then you can move internet as needed in future. Most decent hotspot that work as data via USB on Windows, should work on MikroTik since it used same Windows LTE/5G modem protocol (MBIM). Even an old iPhone or Android work as modem connected to the hAPbe3, especially if close to a tower.

I am curious, why the hAP be3?
I mean, how much speed gives a ATT hotspot?
Wouldn't a hAP AX3 be more than enough?

Any with USB work. I'm playing sales man since that has multiple USB jacks built-in so you can have a modem and disk. I still haven't gotten any yet, but it specs/design look good. And L009 work similarly, with only 2Ghz, and any number of other cheaper things like hAPax3 etc. It's a worthless modem in US I'd avoid... The key point being: there are no MikroTik 5G devices that work in the US in decent 5G speeds. And the US bands are tricky, and some carriers restrict what devices work on top...it not a free world here, and MikroTik [somewhat understandable] does not want to play Verizon nor AT&T certification games.

I'd imagine 100-500Mb/s down, way less up (40-100Mb/s) with some recent 5G hotspot device. The really high end modems, do better on upload since they typically have more CA abilities. And that's why it's tricky, since each carrier combines bands differently which is how these higher speed, so there is another dimension beyond just the band modems support, but also what CA frequency combos. With each carrier having slightly different band plans and CA combos. Thus, you often better getting some hotpot from carrier, since they have promos etc. and certified to their specs, than buying hotspot at retail. Which hotspots... depend on the region/state, so IDK about North Carolina specifically but AT&T typically pitches some Netgear Nighthawk Mx or Inseego 5G something, why I was vague but AFAIK both support MBIM.

Yep, so no real need of wifi 7 on the AP, this Is what I meant.

Looking at the ATT router. I'm assuming it's only LTE.

I live right next to highway 23/74 and the cell tower is right behind my house.

I can hit it with a rock!

Question? Would that be a roaming tower? If there is such a thing.

Also, I notice the the ipv6 address is in New York city. I would have assume the POS would at least be in the same state in North Caroline?

There should be 5G coverage if you're near Asheville. I'd move whatever thing you have from AT&T closer to a window, since if I read the output above... it "RAN" mode seems to have 5G options. It's also possible the tower you're looking at does not have AT&T. Or, one side-effect of tower severing a major freeway is that all the cars going buy connect/disconnect to tower, so add a lot of handshaking, not issue most times, but during peak traffic times ("rush hour"), you'd notice LTE/5G being slower.

But what advice are you looking for here?

AT&T wireless should work well there, granted you're very likely behind a CGNAT on the networking side. Which I suppose why you mention the IPv6 location... on that IDK but it not abnormal for thing like ookla speedtest/etc to report further locations, since AT&T may run the traffic over their own network before it hits the internet, and the IPv4 and IPv6 can take separate paths.

AT&T also has a lot of macro cell sites, where it covers a few blocks/etc, which are typically still 4G, and use a local uplink. In these cases, the macro cells have an IPSec tunnel someplace, which may not be very local. Which is why despite seeing a tower, you may not be using it or AT&T has no services on it.

Asheville is 34 miles away. I ran cellmapper on my phone and it maps to the tower behind my house and it oould be just a roaming tower right next to the highway.

But I'm trying to figure out if it has AT&T service or if it's what looks iike to be a American Towers, Inc. 0.8 mi.

This one is an AT&T tower 1.1 miles away. Bellsouth Mobility Dcs tower.

I'm trying to figure this out. The AT&T modem, not very user friendly. But may you can view this.

Maybe AT&T info from the cell ID?

Also, it could be that AT&T goofed up . I wouldn't put it pass them for doing this wrong.

I also think it's only LTE light.

This tells you the same RSRP (~power) and RSRQ (~"quality") things, with RSRP being ~-100 being were you start having problems. The RSRQ is seem okay, and that's effected somewhat by the other towers the modem also sees.

One thing to keep in mind is that modem don't typically keep all the possible CA connected (= modem will use multiple bands and aggregate them) unless there is active higher traffic from your network... so if you read setting while it doing a long-running speed test, you might see speeds ramp up as the modem uses more bands.

If you're using the Wi-Fi off this thing, that may be the weak link since often they have terrible Wi-Fi. What AT&T modem are we talking about here? I'm still not sure what you're trying to do.

What the hell is that frequency

It was in my first post.

What I'm looking at is where it says LTE only. I'll have to find out if we have 5G service and if we're paying for something we're not getting.

Also, by looking at the numbers. Is it safe to say it's the tower behind the house?

0.8 miles on top of the mounton.

TIA

You'd have to ask AT&T. If you're not getting more 100Mb/s download, something is not right. The upload be more sensitive to where and how it's located since the tower has more power than you for download, but on upload it the modem power that matters which isn't as strong, so things like multiple walls/etc. are more troublesome for good upload speeds which still be 15-30% of the download.

I'd look at those same stats while doing a long download from a fast site, and see if goes into 5G mode.
