automatic hotspot login using mac address

Trying to let hotspot users login automatically with a mac address.
The manual says “a client is not prompted for username and password if the MAC address of this computer is in the HotSpot user database”, but I still get the login page. I’ve tried checking and unchecking auth mac, auth mac password, and login mac universal in winbox in various combinations with no luck.
The manual also says “this method does not excuse clients from the common login procedure”, which is confusing to me.
I did use CAPS when setting the name and password of the user to the mac address in hotspot user.

Check ‘auth mac’ and ‘auth mac password’.

Enter mac address as username and password in the format:

AA:BB:CC:DD:EE

Should work. I tried this a few days ago.

I have that for the user name and password, and for the mac address field, but still get a login screen.

I deleted my user in winbox and did a command line user add and it works fine, not sure why my winbox add failed.
