Backup password confirmation FEATURE REQ

Hi

I seriously can’t be the only person that has come unstuck with this.
I managed to bork my mikrotik router and switch today while working on it.
No problem, I’ll go restore the backup

Bad password

Noooooooo

Problem? The GUI never asks you to confirm you got the password right, never confirms it.
I have never seen a system that asks you for a password to encrypt something and then doesn’t ask you to re-enter it.
I had to completely re-build my router today because I guess I mistyped my password when entering it while taking the backup

Please consider adding a confirmation input validation when taking backups.

And yes, I’ll take more backups in future and then test my backup immediately after taking it which means rebooting the router

“export” is better than backup, and why you set a password for yourself?

You are the first one who made a mistake, you should have tested if the backup you just made would recover, instead of hoping that it would work later.

You can also write the password wrong twice in the same way…

  1. It's a feature request. I'm requesting this feature, not a lecture.

  2. Testing it immediately requires a reboot, ever consider that the router may be in use and can't be instantly rebooted.

Why does a feature request have to be met with hostility.

Blocked.

Why are you reading me if you blocked me?
You are not consistent with what you write.

As an excuse it’s ridiculous, when you reset it you could have FIRST tried to reload the backup, because surely when you reset it you intended to block the service…

If the password is wrong it doesn’t load the backup and doesn’t reboot the machine, so nothing was interrupted.

If you didn’t want a lecture, you would have simply asked support instead of telling what happened to you on the user forum.

Asking something here without contacting support is useless.

Just in case you missed it, rextended,Sinner Lost :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Seems like a nice chap though!!

MikroTik is not big on the password confirmation anywhere, so be kinda strange if only backup confirmed the password. And not sure everyone want to be prompted all the time.

Now… IMO there should be at least some “Show Password” option or :glasses: icon in winbox/webfig to “see” the password… as in between “always confirm” and current “always redacted” scheme.

Already exist from 2007… on Settings click on “Hide Password” tho show or hide password… on terminal is already showed, but the line on new v7 do not go on history.

It would be nice if there was a supported way to test a backup for restorability without actually restoring it.

Similar to 7-zip test archive which will prompt for a password if one was used when the archive was created.

I know there is https://github.com/BigNerd95/RouterOS-Backup-Tools but I am not sure if that still works, and I have never tried it.

Could you try downloading it (but not applying it) from the CLI?

thanks to all the others who were kind enough to reply without trying to gatekeep everything and be rude in broken english

im quite sure im not the only person who came unstuck with a wrong password
i will have to just get used to doing my backups and testing them during late / early hours when nobody is using it
because as far as i know if you want to test it, you need to reboot it.
