What I want to setup in very near future, is a transparent traffic shaper, which will have three different rates for clients like 512K, 1Mbit and 2Mbit, and the overall bandwidth which will passthrough it is 200 Mbit/s, so what I’m wondering before I begin with this, does anyone of you guys has any result of how much load is capable to shape RouterOS of course depending on the hardware, and also any hardware recommendation ?
Through that Shaper it will pass the traffic of around 3000 clients and more or less 20000 packets per second, the configuration will be tweaked just for traffic shaping nothing else will be configured just bandwidth management, and as I mentioned before just 3 rates 512k, 1M and 2M products.
The setup will be like this:
Thanks Hellbound, I’m thinking of using something like that probably IBM Server, but I’m wondering about any issue with RouterOS regarding this traffic load.
Well I don’t really have problem with our load, but we have problem with usermanager database when it gets big, mikrotik goes crazy, so not recommendable at all on that number of user. you need something good for radius and accounting to be totaly separated from your gateway. and not mikrotik userman
besides per user and per pc your activity may differ from 200 to 3000 users. that means a lot of overhead.
yes I’m using for accounting a separate system, this will be only for purpose of traffic shaping, and yes the number of clients on the peak hours will reach 3000, regarding the hardware I’m not sure of RB1000 but maybe I will use some quad core IBM or any other enterprise server with 2 gigabit ethernets, but I just wanted to have opinion of you guys if you have experience with this kind of load, for now I’m using ALLOT as a bandwidth manager it is wonderful perfect for this kind of job, but I can not install it allover the network because it is very expensive with all features it exceeds 100.000 Euros so I want to give a try with RouterOS.
here i´m doing exactly what you want to do with mikrotik. but mine stays before the cisco router. its shapes from the upstream provider to our core. 150mbits, avg of 22000 pps avg cpu load is 35 ~40 % with a few simple queues and no firewall rule.
the server is a HP pro liant ML 110 G4 pentium D 2.8 Ghz , mikrotik 3.7 multi-cpu on.
just to put a power router or a rb1000 . but dunno if the rb1000 is powerfull enough to handle the task.
